After what happened with the 360 I am gun shy about buying any console on day one.

F*cking wait if you want.

But if devoted gamers didn't go out and buy the systems early on then your "wait" would be worthless. For example, let's all be like you and wait... and then the system dies because everyone waits.

Agreed. The 360 and PS3 still have a lot of juice left. Of course it is all about the games for me. If both have a strong lineup out the gates, I may get both.

COVAtheNOVA

Agreed, even though I'm getting the PS4 I still got a butt-load of PS3 and 360 games to play!! Why get a PS4 then some might ask? Well, I already had planned on getting another system for my spare room, and at 399$ that's the perfect price point for me!!! Heck....that's affordable for anyone!!

no i got my 360 in 05, and its time to move on... If you dont have a PS3, you should get one, because that still has games many gamers want to play. I'm getting the PS4, and the one probably never. Unless MS ever make a version that does not include kinect.

Day one sales are important as they show how many people are dedicated to gaming. The more people that buy consoles day one, the more money goes into gaming. Think of it as supporting the gaming industry with an investment.

Yeah I will be waiting a while to see how all this falls out. I didn't buy last gen until late '07 and that was just to play Mass Effect. With how bad some of the launch models were last time in terms of failure rate it's better to wait. My current hardware is least on par with them so I can run anything they release as multiplatform better on my PC anyway.

Yep, it's why I don't buy consoles at launch, it's better to play the waiting game.

No, i'll wait a few months to see if there are any technical issues with the PS4 like there were with the 360.

I think both consoles will have a decent holiday but struggle in the immediate aftermath. Much like 3DS, Vita, and WiiU. All three systems had very bumpy starts and all three were outsold by their immediate predecessors in at least one of the big three regions for multiple months out of their first calendar year. I think PS4 and XB1 will run into similar issues. The hardware market is contracting for sure, and I think all five major systems (3DS, Vita, WiiU, XB1, PS4) will be outsold by their predecessor (DS, PSP, Wii, 360, and PS3 respectively).

I've pre-ordered two of each.  One of each to keep and the other two to ebay for twice their price to the desperate masses who didn;t think ahead and can;t wait.

No I'm so glad you brought this up, because after E3 I thought the exact same thing.  I'm certainly waiting at least 6 months.  I'm overall hugely dissapointed in the lack of innovation in the gaming industry the past 5 years.

Honestly, Microsoft is the one impressing me the most right now with new stuff, and all the hate they are getting just backs up my point.

Not to cause offense, just an observation. The graphical gap is smaller than it's ever been. Plenty of the games shown at E3 could easily pass for current gen games. A lot of the big hitters like Metal Gear Solid, COD, Battlefield, GTA, Destiny and plenty of others are already in development for current gen consoles too and will probably end up being the more solid versions; - last gen all of the first wave next-gen games were just rushed ports of current gen versions.

Anyway.... my point is simply that you could easily wait a year, have plenty of games to play, not really miss out on anything and then get a new console at a significantly reduced price with a few games bundled in.

Not if you are selling it on EBay. People will get like $1000+ for one I'm sure. blackace

Lol...that's true.  Last gen consoles we're selling for crazy numbers on EBay at their launch.

Not really. I don't care about the graphical "leap". It's the games that interest me. I will be getting my system on day one, and I'll enjoy it as I always do. :)

Doesn't seem like a whole lot to play at launch. Whenever MGSV drops is the day I go next gen.

What they are doing is the future for gaming, and it's not bad at all.  The environment will change and it will work.  MS is just doing it too early is all.  And as I've said before, MS and Sony won't last long enough to see it come about, GOOGLE will become the juggernaut of the consoles.

The all in one system idea isn't the problem. It's the drm, online check, lending game restrictions, always on kinect. None of which are required for the all in one system to work.

I'm not disputing the fact that the way they are implementing it is wrong, but it's because the environment doesn't support it.  The used games and unavailable internet make these policies unfriendly.  But someday there will be no used games, and it will be for the better.

I predict a GOOGLE console will bring this about.

From a consumer standpoint however, the only issue remaining for me is 24 hour check in.  I don't like that.  They retracted used games DRM so that's good as well.

I'm waiting for launch to see if that's the case.

I know when Steam first came out it peed all over consumers too, but it proved to be the best method of delivering games, and content to gamers ever. Gaming has never been more accessible than it is now on PC, and we can thank Steam for that.

We'll just see the direction MS goes with the Xbox One. If there is absolutely no trade-off for any of the inconveniences then it could be bad, but it could also turn out to be a powerhouse all-digital system that provides an enormous amount of content for an awesome price (as long as you have internet).

I don't think it is a dumb decision. Do you really think the consoles are going to drastically drop in price or drop off the face of the earth anytime soon. Some people like the games that are coming out on or near launch, and have the cash to pay for a new console. Seriously it has been seven years since the PS3 was released, I am kind of tired of it.

I don't get how it's a dumb investment when you have great warranty companies out there like Squaretrade, that will replace your console with a newer model if it breaks.

It's an investment if you buy it then save it until you think you can resell it for more money than that of you paid. It's worth more as a time investment as soon as you can own it. The thing about life is we all die someday. Using something as much as you can before you die is the best time investment you can do.

Buying a PS4 day 1 is alright, however you would have to be a real douche to buy a xboxone day one. The best thing would be to make sure RROD2 kinks are all worked out. Seriously.

I would love to pick up a PS4 at launch, but I can't just drop $400+$60(PS+)+$120(2 games) on a console with limited library when I have a couple PCs that need some loving. $400 of hardware and $200 of games on steam and indie bundle sites would make X1 or PS4 seem like a fart.

Maybe I'll pick up the controllers if they're officially supported by Windows/Steam.

My stepson wants an XB1 so we'll probably get him one for Xmas. As for myself, I'm not sure about either machine. For the XB1, I'm not sure how the DRM and cloud is going to work out so I'll sit back watch things unfold for a while before I actually decide. As for the PS4, I think Sony will have their hands full with overheating issues due to its surprisingly small size. Time will tell so I'll hold off till then.

How so? You definitely get your money's worth from video games, compared to other entertainment mediums. $60 for fifteen hours of entertainment is a good investment.

Pretty Much.

I won't begrudge the early adopters that grab lauch machines, new toys are fun.  I've had a number of launch consoles myself.  But add a PC to what TC said and I'm in no hurry.

I dont care what other gamers do with there money. They want it at launch, kudos to them.

Personally, I never get a launch console, Id rather just wait a few months or a year to see whats in store.

PS4 already paid for in full. Day one baby! I don't see how it's a bad investment if you're buying it for games that you'll enjoy. I'm gonna be enjoying BF4, KZSF, and Driveclub at launch. These are games I can't get on my PS3 or whose PS3 versions will be rubbish. I could get BF4 for my laptop but I hate Origin and don't want that garbage installed on my laptop. The PS4 is a valuable and affordable investment for me at launch :)

I agree, I'l wait quite a while before buying in, that way the games I want are cheap and hopefully the system drops in price too.

Maybe. It's not always smart to get a console early in its lifecycle. Chance of hardware being a lemon, releases tend to dry for a while after the "launch window". But sometimes "Oooh shiny" takes precedent over rational considerations.
