It sells entirely on the multiplayer. People wanted an extension on to the CoD 4 multiplayer, and that's what they got. CoD 4 was so popular because it had such an easily accesible, and generally easy to play multiplayer. It must be more or less the same with WaW. The whole experience was extremely casual (And unbalanced.), and managed to water down the very competitive nature of online games and create an addictive forumla. It still has an excellent leveling system, which really can make the game feel addictive for a while. But for anyone who either dislikes multi games in general, or likes them a hell of alot, the MMO effect generally starts to wear off when the player realises that they are doing it all for nothing. The game offers so little challenge for someone such as themselves half the time that it becomes boring fast. First prestige is enough for most to get very bored. Gears by comparison isn't half as assesible, with a very slow matchmaking service, and alot more challenging opponents with a far slower pace. The other thing that CoD has is it's use of realistic weaponry. Alot of gamers seem to have a strange fascination with guns (I'm not really exempt from this.), and CoD 4 has alot of them. The great thing is they all feel distinctly diffrent from each other, and all have customisation options. It's actually really quite cool, and that really helps to sell it, Modern day or otherwise.
I think the thing about CoD is that it's a game that can be sold to pretty much anyone with an intrest in shooters. It's just that type of game.
