How long did they expect their yearly DLC to sell well?

MW3 online sucked and I think some people are finally starting to get burnt out by the same game being released every year. I had MW 3 for about 2 months and only played it for a couple of weeks before I got tired of it and it started to collect dust. So I sold it for 40 bucks and took my lady friend out to dinner at applebee's. Best decsion EVER!.
One reason for this. Battlefield 3. Anyone saying it isn't the #1 reason for a sales decline is kidding themselves. Now, I hope I'm wrong and the COD franchise redefines itself, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.BadNewsBenThen how is it that MW3 broke the first week sales record when BF3 was released before it? People just flat dont like MW3 online as much as Black Ops. A lot of folks went back to playing Black Ops. BF3 doesnt have enough content to tank a COD game. BF3 has only 12 or so maps including Back to Karkand. Half of those are COD wannabe maps that arent even legit Battlefield experiences. That shooter got old faster than any other I have played.
COD is probably gradually going to sell less and less year after year from now on, but it won't "die". The series will always sell well, but it will probably not match Black Ops ever again. If GTA V does end up coming out this year, expect that to have a massive impact on BO2 sales this year. More so than any impact any other game had last year on MW3. But like I say just because the peak of its popuality is gone, that doesn't mean COD games won't still continue to sell very well.
If there's one thing this proves is dying, it's Infinity Ward. They're a shell of their former selves. They were once great game developers. Some of the best and "cutting edge" in the business. But the brains behind the company are gone for good, and the company just hasn't been the same since they left. The Modern Warfare franchise started off on fire... as the "premiere" COD franchise. But the franchise has gone stagnant since this new IW took over. For instance, MW2(although frustrating to play) was noticeably different from COD4. The graphics, killstreak system, perk system, attachment system etc etc... so many things were changed around. However MW3 is practically the same game as MW2 with some slight tweaks. (But with worse maps, lag, and perk system)
Also, Infinity Ward made a lot of huge mistakes with MW3 that should've been easily avoided. They brought back deathstreaks again when nobody wanted them, brought back Last Stand AGAIN, added in a Support Package which made getting UAVs overpowered and forces you into using the Assassin perk due to the UAV spam, they added in a Lag Compensation system that does nothing but make the game feel laggy and broken for most people, and to top it off the maps and spawn system are just so bad.... They're still better than Treyarch at gun balance and hit detection(barely) as well as graphics, but that's about it. They try way too hard to cater to noobs thinking it will help the game sell by helping out casual players, but nobody really wants any of these things. They don't listen to their fanbase at all and they're horrible at patching their games these days. Every time they try to fix 1 thing they end up breaking 2 more things as well. They released a patch to nerf Dual Wield Pachine Pistols by lowering their fire rate recently, and ironically they "accidentally" RAISED the fire rate by as much as 30-40% for some of them instead of lowering it. THAT is sad...
It's just obvious they're getting worse and worse. The company is not the company it once was, releasing Game Of The Year candidates with every single release. That era is now over. It just seems like Treyarch is taking over as the "premiere" COD developers. Black Ops was a HUGE step up from World At War... and Treyarch seems to improve and realize their potential more and more with each game they release. They clearly work harder at making sure their games are packed with as much content and customization as possible, from the guns and emblems right down to the sound options in the game. They actually listen to their fans a lot and fix stuff a lot of stuff if people don't like it. They're now better at making maps, single player campaigns, stat-tracking, innovative game types(like wager matches), XP system(cod points), killstreak balance, matchmaking, audio, etc etc etc... they're just the better developers these days when it comes to what actually matters. And the COD fanbase is agreeing for the most part.
I've never seen so many people already giving up on a game so short into it's life-span as MW3. It seems like so many people hate MW3 and are going back to Black Ops or waiting for "Black Ops 2" already. Usually people don't start talking about the next COD game until at least like July-August because they're still playing the current game and happy with it... it's barely Feburary and people talk about it all the time. That's a pretty good sign that MW3 sucks. And so does the new IW.
And TBH MW3 sucking really could start a chain reaction of people not buying the next COD though. If people hate MW3 that much, they might not even give the next one a chance. So the developers want to start building steam again and gaining more customers instead of LOSING them, Treyarch needs to come out on fire and really step their game up and release an epic game this year to keep people from losing interest in the series altogether. Black Ops was a good start and a fun game, but they need to take from what they did with Black Ops and double that effort and make the "perfect"(I use that term loosely) COD game. People wont put up with the bullcrap much longer. They want a masterpiece, and Treyarch needs to release a masterpiece THIS year. People wont keep waiting for that "perfect" COD game year after year, only to be disappointed time and time again. It needs to be now. This next COD game will most likely be the last COD game of the gen, and probably the last with the current graphics engine/game mechanics(they'll most likely from scratch next gen and make their graphics more up-to-date with the newer hardware), so now's the perfect time to give their maximum effort and put all of their developing into focusing on the gameplay. It probably wont happen, but that's what they need to do to continue to hold onto their customers.
Not sure why everyone is "happy" about this. If COD does "die out" it will be replaced with a similiar game... i.e. a game you will all hate and say that a lesser title is better because its different to what everyone thinks is good.

Not surprised. I mean, there are much better games that Activision can focus on rather than CoD every single year. They've turned this franchise into a Need For Speed or FIFA game. I enjoyed Black Ops and the first 2 MWs, I haven't tried MW3 yet, because I feel there are MUCH better games in the current market that I can pay 60$ for. And it seems like people are seeing that. Finally.

The games are similar enough that you wouldn't need to buy both.
About time. People are finaly starting to realise how mediocre MW3 is.
They must be moving over to the infinitely superior Battlefield 3.
Yup. I see a ton of people still playing BO to this day. Much more polished than MW3.well that might have something to do with MW3 sucking. black ops is infinitely better...
lazerface216
So instead of making $1 billion, they make $0.9 billion?
HUGE difference! :P
It's still a load of cash

I'll agree with this as well. Black Ops was a damn fun game and I played it for quite a few months. MW3 is crap by comparison and I'm never buying another Infinity Ward CoD again.

I agree it took a slice, skyrim took a lot of potential customers also though, its third most played game on Xbox live right now. there is still 300,000 online in mw3 Xbox live peak UK hours too, so its not dying, yet Ah okay, I see what you mean now. I'm sure Skryim didn't help either, you're right.[QUOTE="sts106mat"] there are more people on Xbox live playing skyrim than battlefield 3 source :http://majornelson.com/sts106mat
People seem to be forgetting that even a huge drop in Call of Duty sales is still more than triple of any other exclusive franchise or even another multiplat franchiseprobably.
This thing ain't going anywhere folks. Instead of making 5 billion they make 4 or 3.5.
Lol.

This is exactly what I was talking about in my post. COD isn't necessarily dying, but IW is definitely. People(aside from the little 12 year old squeaker "l33t quickscopers" that IW caters to) are losing trust in IW to develop a good game, while Treyarch on the other hand seems to get better and better as developers with each release. It's like a complete turnaround ever since Infinity Ward changed.Treyarch games will continue to sell really high unless Treyarch games start getting worse instead of better, but IW games will fall in sales with each release unless they do something soon to step up their game.
I think the point of it all is that Modern Warfare has hit a plateau. And it needs to mix things up a bit if they don't want to see a decline.
Let Treyarch at the series again. They did some pretty cool things with Black Ops. I'd like to see what else they can come up with.
Yeah, right.most of the people who got black ops got it for zombies.
No zomobies means no sales

I wonder what game would be the next Cod.Lonelynight
the next big one? probably respawn entertainment's game or bungie's.
Sorry but no its far from dying, thats barely a drop off in sales, not to mention the game madeover aBillion dollars already so I think CoD is doing alright. You just have to realize that sinceMW3 sold way more in its first week then Black Op's.That means everybody already bought the game, nobody trust the treyarch made CoD gameswhich is why more ppl boughtBlack Op'smonths later when they heard it might be decent.
Ok, but can you tell me if BF3 sales increase year-over-year. I think you found your missing 50%. lol!!
battlefield 3 sucks i hardly see any competition just dedicated fanboys.[QUOTE="free_milk"]
[QUOTE="Wasdie"]
I would hardly call that dying.
I would say the sales are finally slowing down because A) people are getting sick of the same thing over and over and B) there is much stiffer competition with BF3.
Wasdie
It doesn't suck, you're just a blind fanboy who can't see a quality shooter. Sorry that you need killstreaks, perks, and ridiculously overpowered weaponry in maps the size of the average living room to have fun.
nah bf3 is pretty bad not saying mw3 is any better lol MW1 is much better than bf3 tho, assuming you play S&D and not lolish tdm. Please Log In to post.
