is it possible togive the gamespot's game of the year award to a game that didnt score 9.0 and higher? I usually judge the game the same as gamepot's standards, even with all the goty awards from cod4, mgs4 to demons souls... but man, this game heavy rain is looking to be a goty in my book, its just so awesome, lots of intense and exciting moments, also I never made a thread just to say how good a game isbut gamespot posters need to know that HR is the game that every gamer should experience, I just dont wanna stop playing it, lol...

I dont think its ever happened but its definitely possible. Since their were a number of 9.5's last year, and Demons Souls won (9.0), I definitely think its possible. Remember, the score is just one persons opinion, and GOTY is a general consensus from GS.

Its not impossible but I doubt Heavy Rain would win GOTY, Mass Effect 2 already beats it ( coming from a cow )

it's possible, it depends if they feel the game ages well over the year and sticks with them, they also have multiple reviewers here at gamespot, so it depends what everyone elses opinions are. i actually forgot to pre order this game and realised it came out today...

One word Everquest.....it was a AA game and nailed GOTY.So it is possible.

Also people already claiming ME2 is GOTY its not wise to count aall your chickens just yet theres still 10 months for other games to come out :P just saying.

I doubt it, that means there whole system wouldn't work. 8.5>>9.5? doesn't work like that.

I think scores are absolutely pointless in judging a games quality, mainly because they become obsolete 4-6 months later... but there are lots of other reasons too.

1. new games being released, scoring similar and thus invalidating the previous games score.
2. technical difficulties can hold back review scores, but those can be all but fixed a few moths down the line.
3. different genres and different platforms have different standards.

there are a few more, but i think every game you anticipate will seem awesome when you first play it, but as time goes by you'll realize it has problems and vice versa with others.

As much as gamespots review quality has gone down in last few years (albeit getting a lot better recently), if you want to use scores, they are probably more reliable than other sites, that pretty much inflate them.

so in short.... yes :Pits possible...hehe

just look at deus ex, probably regarded as the best pc game of all time by many but only scored a 8.2 here.

It doesn't work like that either. Each score comes from ONE reviewer. The GOTY is decided by the entire staff.

AA games have been nominated many times, so yea, it's possible. Just not as likely.

it does work like that.. 2009 for example. Demons Souls = GOTY (9.0) while Uncharted 2 was a 9.5

Probably not. Game scores are in brackets. Thats why it was possible for Demons Souls to beat the 9.5s last year, because it was in the same league. A game that scored 8.5 is not in the same league as games that score 9.0 or 9.5. There will ALWAYS be games that score in the 9s so an AA game wont get GOTY (im talking about GS' opnion and decision, im not saying because GS gave this a 9 its better than every other lower scoring game).

And the only reason Everquest got GOTY was because GS used to do console GOTY and PC GOTY back then. Console GOTY was Soul Calibur DC (10/10). Do you really think it would have won under one system? unlikely.

Heavy Rain has the advantage over ME2. ME2 came out at the start of the year(as with HR) but Heavy Rain will last longer on reviewers minds i think, as it's so unique.

Which is a better game? ME2 obviously :)
