Atlus are freaking publishers, not devs :|leadernator
They also develop. The Shin Megami Tensei series being a shining example of what they're capable of.
Anyone can... 'Cause Square Enix has yet to realese a solid game (brand new one) or a game from their Solid Franchise (FF/KH).haris12121212
Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core says hello.
you lied when you said "good read" in the topic title. seriously, Renegade, do you really enjoy being such a fanboy?clone01
It is a very good read I was just reading it before I came to SW :).
I think SE is still a powerhouse, but Level 5 would be a very smart acquisition for Sony.

I see someone agrees with me.
No one, and i mean No one can detrhone Square enix from being the rpg king anytime soon.
Just because they've been quiet for a while and haven't released a huge game doesn't mean some small companies will dethrone them. Sure Atlus and Lv 5 are excellent rpg developers but nothing they currently have can amount to the final fantasy + dragon quest house.
Fabulla Nova Crystallis(sp) is in the works and i guarantee you once it hits, it will be HUGE. The only FF game that was subpar is ff x-2 and you can tell SE didn't put any effort into it. FFXI is their first attempt at tackling the online market and they did fairly decent at it. Though ff XII is not on the scale of FF X it was still a very enjoyable final fantasy title.
Don't get me wrong i love persona and dark cloud but its hard to put those games on the same scale as a final fantasy title. I'm not a big fan of the dragon quest series but if im not mistaken it's as huge as the final fantasy series...
So to answer your question, No Level 5 cannot dethrone Square Enix as the rpg king... at least not anytime soon.
Dragon Quest is an even bigger name in Japan than Final Fantasy. And Level 5 did the 8th game of that series.Don't get me wrong i love persona and dark cloud but its hard to put those games on the same scale as a final fantasy title. I'm not a big fan of the dragon quest series but if im not mistaken it's as huge as the final fantasy series...

Level 5 is the one working with the Dragon Quest series, they made DQ8 and are currently working on DQ9 I think. No one, and i mean No one can detrhone Square enix from being the rpg king anytime soon.

FFX was not SE it was Square-Soft
SE games come from X-2 and beyond which is why some people no longer consider them the kings anymore.

But I thought Sony was concentrating on 1st Party games instead of buying?
I think that's really just people trying to rationalize Sony losing all these exclusives. I doubt that anyone outside of Sony knows what their gameplan is when it comes to securing exclusives.
I will agree that buying up Level-5 would be a very, very good decision on their part, though.

Just tough to pull off, given their financial situation. Plus you'd have to imagine Microsoft would be wary of such a move and may well have a counteroffer ready just in case. Sony knows it can't beat Microsoft in a war of attrition--Microsoft has the bigger war chest.[QUOTE="Blackbond"]But I thought Sony was concentrating on 1st Party games instead of buying?

It actually makes sense...
Most of Sony's efforts go to frist party games. Of course there will be a couple of published games like inFAMOUS and White Knight. But overall they are focusing mostly on 1st party titles.
Same with Microsoft, but it's the other way around. They focus mostly on acquiring 3rd party titles, but they still develope a couple of 1st party games like Fable and Forza.
The point is that these companies can focus mostly on one business plan and still pursue others at the same time.

I agree 100%. Sony doesn't have the money to play the same game MS is. Therefore they invest most of their money in their existing 1st party studios.

they worked on 1-2 out of 9 titles ._. its by no means their game... its still a Square enix game. Can't really put the Draon quest repertoire on lv 5's list.
They would need to have a few extremely successful established franchises to even begin to compete with SE.
Dark Cloud series is not quite there.
Atlus definitely will if Squeenix doesn't release anything good and original.foxhound_fox
While I agree that Atlus top-tier is just as if not even more of quality then Square-Enix they just don't put out that many quanity of quality of releases. They really need to expand to compete.
However if Level 5 keeps progressing like they are I have no doubt that they can dethrone Square-Enix.

Those 1-2 happen to be the latest two. S-E wouldn't turn over the reins of such an important series to Level 5 without a good reason. It's a vote of confidence to be entrusted with a flagship series.[QUOTE="-Renegade"][QUOTE="OutlawStarXIII"]Damn your fanboyismBlackbond

They are but a lot of their 1st party games are from people they have bought. If they buy Lvl 5 then they become 1st party.
Sony acquiring Media Molecule and Level-5 would be one of the best things they could do.EVOLV3
Media Molecule? absolutely
Lavel-5? I dont think they want to be bought, they want to make games on multiple platforms and sony isnt that hot this gen around. If this happened, i would predict people leaving L5 to go elsewhere (something that happens often when dev houses are bought)

Actually I do agree with him. Level 5 would be a great aquisition for Sony. Anyone could see that :). (But that was a good comeback you had there)
lol sony and square own level 5.....they both released mmorpg for playstation 2 and level 5 couldnt even make a mmorpg for xbox what a joke company they are.
Level-5 can surely beat Square-Enix, but it will never dethrone SquareSoft.jtickner
at cancelling games about it.
LOL you know how pathetic level 5 is? they canned their mmorpg on xbox because they couldnt compete with square's final fantasy xi and everquest by sony on ps2.

I'm sorry they canceled one RPG on the original Xbox that probably would have failed anyway. Look at the console it was being released on. If White Knight Chronicles is a good game then in my mind Level-5 have already beaten Square-Enix, all they do these days is spam the Final Fantasy franchise into the ground and release an inhumane amount of mediocre games each year.

And what games have you made lately?
That's really lame logic.Don't forget Tales.IMO Tri-Crescendo, Tri-Ace, Monolith Soft and Atlus are already giving SE a run for their money.
Level-5 is good too.

Well it would make sense because Level 5 is basically exclusive to Sony anyway with the exception of a few DS titles.
