I seriously don't understand why people always spout off that pc online gamiung is the best. I have one question: how exactly?

Pc online is basically a mess. It's a lot like ps2 online, every game has their own specific structure.

Yes, Xfire exists, but here's the cold truth: it does nothing. It just is a list that says whos playing what. It's not like it truly unifies the system. It's nothing more than an online now sticker. It doesn't make it any easier to hop into a game with anyone.

The whole Xfire/Steam etc. stuff is basically fueled by the fact that they let you download lots of stuff there, but that's really just an alternatvie to going to a store.

And saying pc gaming is lag free is completely false, it's about the same as psn or xbl, no different.

Seriously, this is the biggest bs statement ive heard people say. Pc online gaming is not the best. In fact, it's not even as good as PSN.

* basically this: Pc gaming fails for 2 reasons: You're not connected and be honest here, who has friends that actually play pc gaming online with them? Seriously? Talking about real friends here.

because they have user-generated contnent, dedicaded servers, larger capacities, less lag...for virtually every game.

notice how Bad Company on consoles only supported 24 players.

more players? yea, sure. but truth is, your not going to get above 64 anywhere.

Can someone explain how this is better?

Probably because you have things like better hardware than current gen consoles, If you have that better hardware chances are the games will look better. For the most part games run smoothly as long as you have the hardware for them to run smoothly. There are also mods and dedicated servers and everything else console users tout as being beneficial to their consoles online.

But there are downsides to PC gaming as well. For instance you have hacksthat are far more easy to comeby than modding your console which allow you to cheat in online games.

There is some truth to that statement

Steam does Whatever XBL does for free

Mod Supported, the only console game is UT3 that is mod supported and that failed online

Much bigger community/forums

Usually Free updates for games (see TF2)

NOT under a unified system (Freedom is awesome)

and many others, i could list a few but you should get the point...and Xfire does "Nothing", it was made for a reason..but sense Steam is taking the spotlight in the online gaming community not many people use Xfire that much

PC gaming, for the most part, IS lag free, unless its a server problem or your own every PC game runs lag free, i had more console games with glithces/lag than TF2 so far.

PC gaming online is the best, and will continue to be, the only thing even close to it is XBL, Nintendos and Sonys suck so far, and XBL is leagues behind what PC can offer, and all of it for free.

First of all...PC games have gotten above 64...and many times.

and they do have less lag....that is the benifit of dedicaded servers, in addition to of course having a much more stable connection.

Plus there is the fact that they get user-generated content for nearly every major game...where as you guys get the luxury of paying for Horse armor.

For modern PC games, if you have a DSL connection, and you're not downloading porn in de background and you're playing on a dedicated server, you wil NOT get lag. EVER.

And there youy are completely wrong. Do you have any idea how many MMOs are out for PC> Do you have any idea how many players play WOW on a daily basis? PC gaming is far and away larger than console gaming will ever be this gen (or probably next) and for a long time to come.

Xfire and Steam enable you to join your friend's game. Anyway, #1 reason are proper servers, just add a fav server and always play with the same people and get to know them, there are mods, less lag, more players, admins and online communities for pretty much anything. It's free too.

NO REALLY!!!!! OMG, Counterstrike, right now, has more players combined than XBL, WOW for example has a huge community (and yes i can use this game, dont say "buh buh its teh mmorpgz!!!!", in terms of community size and forums it completly rapes XBL not to mention the numerous Quake 3 Arena forums, ET forums, And Battlefield forums and communities

Not being unified is good? Seriously?

Yes lol...when you have some freedom you realize how awesome it really is, the ability to share anything you want without MS or sony behind you back watching what you do is great, being able to create any kind of mods, Marketplace is much bigger and you can find almost any old pc game you want to play, yea..its that awesome

As lag free as console games

Yes, you need to also realize that a console has PC parts..IF consoles are lag free, from a hardware standpoint so will PC, its just up to the server and your connection to be able to justify that, having dialup dosent do online gaming justice, this is an invalid point and varies depending on who your talking to.

I'm fairly confident that more people play PC games online than XBL. I'm not sure how you can even think that the PC is smaller than XBL in the online gaming department. And you do realize that lag is often caused by a bad server and/or a bad internet connection? The only times when I have actually lagged is when my sister was on youtube and watching 50 music videos at the same time or the server i was playing on was crap.

Gamer4535

Your sentence structure confuses me. :?

I've gathered you're trying to say that Halo 3 has less lag than TF2 (PC), correct?

First of all, I disagree with this statement. Second, I'd like to remind you that the amount of lag in TF2 would be dependant on the particular server. The amount of lag you would suffer varies from server to server (but in just about every case, would still be less than H3). Third, don't forget that H3 has a much smaller player cap than TF2 does, thus, it would lend itself to less lag.

Latency. Halo 3 is latency ridden. I can choose servers my continent on any steam game, but I'm stuck on a US host 95% of the time when playing a game of Halo 3. Being half a second behind everyone else is quite a big handicap.

Seeing as I have the choice to only use UK based servers, instead of filtering by "language" (thats going to work) I can completely avoid this problem.

what this means is that anyone one persons lag will effect everybody else.

but it doesn't.

peer to peer means essentially that everyone is getting their data from everyone else. There is no main source. Each player will upload their info to everyone else and everyone will download it from everyone else.

Server hosted means that players will upload it to the server and everyone will download it from it.

Client hosted means everyone will upload it to a the host and everyone will download it form them.

Halo uses a mixture of the latter 2.

PC gameing, for the most part, IS lag free, unless its a server problem or your own every PC game runs lag free, i had more console games with glithces/lag than TF2 so far.

PC gaming online is the best, and will continue to be, the only thing even close to it is XBL, Nintendos and Sonys suck so far, and XBL is leauges behind what be can offer and all of it for free.

No, pc gaming online is much smaller than XBL. And forums? You realize that pc gaming online =/= internet

Not being unified is good? Seriously?

As lag free as console games

I'm fairly confident that more people play PC games online than XBL. I'm not sure how you can even think that the PC is smaller than XBL in the online gaming department. And you do realize that lag is often caused by a bad server and/or a bad internet connection? The only times when I have actually lagged is when my sister was on youtube and watching 50 music videos at the same time or the server i was playing on was crap.

You really think that as a whole, there are more constant pc players than XBL players?

Seriously?

And by that I mean someone who plays constantly online. I play TF2 online, but that's just one game.

given that WoW alone has more users than the entire XBL community...and that counterstrike, a 10 year old game is more popular than Halo 3...yes.

wow has a total lifetime players of 10 million. yea? so. I had 3 accounts. I again dont pc game constantly, I just do it for a couple of games.

And CS is more popular than Halo 3? I want a link to this

----> I think that statement summarizes it. Pc gamers talk out of... ah.. I won't go there.

as for Counter Strike...I just checked...Halo 3 has slightly more players playing online right now...but Counter Strike is more widespread...and as a result gets more unique users every day.

11 registered users every month? Again where's this info coming from? The commerials advertise "10 million people have experienced it already" so id assume they wouldn't deflate there number

Yes, I do think that. Although if you mean by playing nothing but an online game, not sure if you would count the people who play nothing but Clear Sky one day, then nothing but CoD4 the next.

Because something tells me you're comparing CS's last week/month to Halo 3's activity at this moment.

You do understand that every day almost a million different people play Halo 3?

And that's not even taking into account that multiple people share xbl accounts where they'd jsut create seperate ones for the pc.

if i remember correctly thats 10mil ACTIVE accounts..as in people playing regularly and activly every day

CS is featured in MANY pro-gaming/E-sports competitions, WCG, ESWC, CEVO, CS also has world wide recgonition, its like the Starcraft of the FPS world...Halo is popular, but in terms of a big community, more players, various tournaments CS completly outshines Halo in those areas,

one example is Japan, do you really think they give 2 **** about Halo?, yet CS has alot of korean players, swedish players, german players and pro clans in various parts of the world as well. the way i see it, thats much more popular than halo

no, Im going by gamespy current stats for Counter Strike.

http://archive.gamespy.com/stats/

and Bungie's stats for Halo 3.

http://www.bungie.net/

like, I said, Halo has slightly more right now...but thats only because no many Counter Strike players come from Asia, where its currently sleeping time...where as Halo 3 has virtually no Asian players.

Gamer4345. I am a PC gamer, but I also at one time had a subscription to xbox live. All I can say about XBL is that finding games is a bit faster, PC is better in all other respects though.

oops. I didn't read the fine print at the top. However I think that people that would pay for a WoW account wouldn't exactly completely abandon their account just because they wanted a quick play of it then never play it again. Reagrdless of my link I have no clue why anyone would be arguing the case that you are trying to argue. It's common sense that there are far more players on PC than Live.Steam itself has over 15 million users as given by their website under 'community'. Live is just one service, steam is just one service as well and steam completly trounces Live in memberships. There are also many other types of services on the PC other than steam that do much the same thing.

You're wrong on almost every point you make. I played on XBL (supposedly the best online console gaming experience) for a over a year and it is a complete JOKE compared to online PC gaming.
