Can someone tell me how Microsoft's most recent acquisition benefits gamers?

As I was saying before, now that Bethesda belongs to Microsoft, they are within their rights to do whatever they want with their property in regards to exclusivity. It's different from moneyhatting a third-party dev for exclusives when you turn said third-party dev into a first-party one.

What I wonder however is how does this move benefit the gaming community. What do we gain from that?

Gamers don't benefit. Microsoft is throwing a tantrum right now because someone high up just discovered the Xbox brand is a laughing stock on the internet.

Who cares. As long as it benefits Xbox, that is all that matters to me. The only cherry on top would be for MS to buy CD Project Red.

Literally the only exclusive Sony owns that I like is TLOU. Not to be confused with TLOU2 which was a turd. So I have no reason to invest in PS5 for quite a while.

I'm worried about PC versions of their games if they use UWP we won't be able to mod them and modding is at least half the value of Fallout and Elder Scrolls games. Will Microsoft acquiring them at least make them release less broken games? Hopefully they at least don't force UWP on Steam versions of their games.

It benefits gamers because it means Microsoft is finally being competitive for the first time since about 2008. With MS having made this move it means that Sony's continued dominance with the likes of exclusive games is no longer obvious. It means Sony's easy street to success is now gone. It means that they now have to deliver and become more competitive themselves.

Competition means potentially more risk taken. Perhaps new game ideas they wouldn't have bothered with otherwise.

It means gamers on both sides win.

That said, I wish they would have simply spent the money on creating new studios with incredible talent and leaving these once third party games to continue to be multiplat.

Competition, can't think of anything else. I know someone at MS said they don't compete with Sony when it comes to these consoles, but what else is that when they acquire such a big company? Things might get a bit more interesting this gen.

Ask Pedro he will tell you how fantastic exclusives are now.😂😂😂

I agree with you this is busyness as usual, i still think many of those games will make it to PS5 some after they probably be on xbox, but this is how the market work and no cow should get mad about it.

Same with sony buying Insomniac which mean they now own sunset over drive, they can share it or keep it exclusive, is their call.

Holy shit, your response threads proves that you're the one throwing a tantrum right now.

EDIT: oh and your Jim Lying thread where he "ALPH'D" Phil Spencer where you were celebrating Sony getting FF16 as an exclusive doesn't benefit gamers either, at least own your shit man, its getting pathetic.

I can't think of a real benefit/advantage. It "benefits" fanboys who wanted a one up on Sony. It possibly guarantees games on three platforms PC, Xbox and Streaming. The main benefit is watching Sony fannies

But in all seriousness, I blame the stupid obsession with exclusives. People have been bitching about "Xbox has no exclusives" so many times, instead of embracing MS move to a more inclusive platform. So, this is somewhat the result of that incessant bitching. However, this move was mostly likely inevitability because of Gamepass.

I hate third party exclusivity, ngl. And MS may force UWP on future Bethesda titles so this may be bad for me as a PC gamer as I won't be able to mod games, especially for titles like Fallout or TES. BUT I don't think MS is that stupid to not allow mods on these games, however I think they will try to capitalize on this one.

Why did you have the impression it was going to benefit the gaming community? I mean it could but this is about business, nothing else. It's going to be very interesting to see if this is an aggressive move for MS in order to beat Play Station sales this gen.

If they make Fallout or TES exclusive, it's going to be a huge boost to Xbox, which is what they care in the end. It sucks, but that's how it is ... let's see how Sony respond to this.

The only way it benefits gamers is the fact that they are coming to Game Pass and people no longer have to pay 60-70 dollars for each game.

Not everyone can afford to buy every new game at launch.

This is more about supporting their longterm goal than selling Xboxes. The longterm goal is services and this is simply a core component to reaching that goal. If MS is correct and the gaming industry is ready for a shift to services like Gamepass and streaming, they are all set. If the industry is not going down that path, they also set.

I personally hope that there can be negotiations on trading games between platforms in that company A releases game on platform B in exchange for company B releases game on platform A. The less walls we have in gaming the better. But that is me being overly optimistic. Fanboys and gaming journalists are still so freaking tribal.

This doesn't directly answer OP's question (and mine in the other thread, same question). This is more hypothetical. Another hypothetical answer could be something like the following: "now obsidian can work on bethesda IPs!" or similar. They're cool to think about, but we have no way of knowing if that's what is going to happen.

Also, the line that competition always benefits consumers is kind of just dogma at this point. Another outcome of competition is sabotage, which is why acquisitions happen in other industries (asset stripping etc.).

@Black96Z said:

I hope that doesn't happen. With the looks of it and according to previous rumors, it may already be in the works. Absolutely the worst scenario for many reasons.

I just looked it up and apparently back in June they released modding support for the Xbox Windows 10 beta app. So far Into The Breach is the only game on it that allows modding.

Game Pass is going to be the most affordable way to play Bethesda's upcoming titles, day one. It just adds more value to the service, and options to game cheaply are very welcome here right now.

At least we agree on something this is about making gamepass stronger as a service.

@Pedro said: Its not great for the industry as far as I am concern but gamers and the media have been pushing for this shit and have been playing on repeat "teh exclusives". Well, exclusives obession leads to this type of transaction. The only saving grace is that the games would be on three platforms PC , Xbox and streaming. Streaming via Gamepass would also allow more devices. So, while its bad (IMO) its not as bad because of the overall availability of the games. If this was Sony and Nintendo, they would lock the games to their consoles which is absolutely worse. Here

Sony is currently doing the same thing with console exclusives and stop with the 360 PTSD. Give it a rest. Move on.

It's better than just having PS4 dominate the traditional home console market like this gen. They led all gen and just trickled out a few exclusives over the last several years of the PS4's life cycle.

It's clear that Microsoft is doing everything they can to be competitive and win back customers for the new generation. And as others have already said: competition benefits us gamers.

I am anti-exclusive as they are inherently anti-consumer.

Having said that, as a Gamepass subscriber I and other subscribers will have additional value through access to more titles.

Also, I would point out that 99% of the threads made in SWs are about topics that do not benefit gamers in general and specifically none of the delusional cow patty posts that are made about exclusives benefit the consumer in general.

It benefits gamers because Microsoft is the lesser of three evils (Zenimax, Sony, and Microsoft). MS of late has been very pro-game, very much in favor of getting games into people's hands. They are less likely to pull that exclusive bullshit Sony does and other companies are easily paid to do.

The only thing that might have been better is if Bethesda and/or their various subsidiaries bought themselves out from under the control like Bungie did with Activision.

Hopefully they get their shit in order soon. Gamepass has been incredible, but it certainly has its share of issues.

Damn this is some hypocrisy right here.

MS is more likely to allow their games on other platforms than Sony, so really this is good for gamers, and bad for Playstation fans that like to measure their e-peens based on exclusivity [but good for PS gamers that just want games].

Honestly? You should be more worried about Sony not allowing MS games on Playstation out of spite or some legality nonsense. I wager if MS wanted to bring Gamepass to Playstation, Sony would probably say no.

It sucks that many of these games will be exclusive to MS ecosystem, but great that they will be on Game Pass. That is less money I have to spend on games. So, that is one benefit. :)

@Telekill: MS being garbage at first party =/=Sony having it on easy street. They released like 5 major exclusives this year while MS gave a peace sign in 2015. Give credit where it's due already..

'Case by case basis', lol.

But seriously, Netflix, HBO - they probably made a fortune on box sets. Why give MS a reason not to do what's rational?

It probably won't. It could hurt, since UWP and the windows store are such trash. But it could help on the other hand to push Sony to try harder

You have already been advised on your computer. 😉

I'm worried about PC versions of their games if they use UWP we won't be able to mod them and modding is at least half the value of Fallout and Elder Scrolls games. Will Microsoft acquiring them at least make them release less broken games? Hopefully they at least don't force UWP on Steam versions of their games.

I am a little worried about those things as well.

Juub this is bad. You know it's bad. You and Bassman have been against exclusives in the past now you're questioning if this ok since its still coming to PC your platform of choice.

You gotta put yourself in playstation gamers shoes this is terrible us gamers might not get to play Fallout or Elderscrolls 6 or star field even. Thats not good for anyone thats bad.

Don't you guys have phones?
