LOL at whoever said Horizon ZD. That game does not deserve to breathe the same air as zelda let alone compete with it.
@funsohng: Im not sure, ive never played it. But Zelda's climbing ability makes it more open than HZD imo.
@davillain-: Dishonored 2 came out in Nov and was still a contender. The only games that get omitted are usually Dec games
really? the award for GOTY should not be given until January of the following year. If a game gets released in 2017, no matter the month it should be allowed to win GOTY in 2017.
I think it depends, I remember captain toad being pushed to 2015 awards even though it was in the end of 2014
While I'll most likely prefer Mario Odyssey, I can't see anything toppling what Breath of the Wild did. The game is superb and a breath of fresh air for the open world genre. It's the new standard.

If that's the case it's pretty stupid, but in the end GOTY is just a title, and everyone seems to give one out every year.
On topic: it looks really good. Mechanically it being in the same lineage as Mario 64+Sunshine is awesome, and the addition of the hat for transformations should translate into some kick ass speed runs. But I'd be curious how many level design gimmicks they have up their sleeve at this point. Breath of the Wild for me benefits from the fact that I don't think a single 3d Zelda is actually great (the better ones are merely "good"), so it was able to do this whole sale different direction and it's damn good, great even. But Mario? like 5 of his mainline platformers are all time classics. So a bit harder for Mario to impress these days, I'm glad it's not a game like 3D World, but I'm also not super excited to play Odyssey.
I've played plenty of Mario for one life time. I hope there is something unique this year that actually happens to be up to snuff with what Nintendo's two flag ships are doing.
when was the last time a mario game scored 98?
if this game scores 97 or 98 then maybe.
Mario Galaxy - 97 on metacritic
Mario Galaxy 2 - 97 metacritic
Odyssey being that good isn't a foregone conclusion. But, never count out a Mario game. Galaxy was GOTY, after all.

i stand corrected...well then...if this game is galaxy level then yes it has a chance.
If Odyssey gets the same kind of critical reception as BotW did, this place is going to be hilariously stupid for a few weeks.
I hope there's a degradation system for the hats.
I've been gaming since I was five years old on the NES. I love Mario, LOVE Mario, but no. BotW is game of the year 2017. Can't wait for Odyssey though.
Zelda will take the GOTY, but I'll most likely vastly prefer Mario Oddysey. While it's certianly not as ambitious in relation to the rest of the franchise as BotW, it's going to immediately feel better to play.
@KBFloYd: Considering the guys developing SMO are the same guys who made the Galaxy games, it's a good bet.
I am on the fence, but remember mario galaxy 2 won goty and then one looks to be better. But BOTW is amazing
It would need to take it from Halo Wars 2
That's hilarious. That game can't even be mentioned in the same breath as GOTY lol

I think most of us also thought that before Galaxy. Not only were they able to surprise and delight us with Galaxy, but they had SO many ideas that they were able to make Galaxy 2 which is arguably superior.
If there's a team that can pull a rabbit out of it's hat consistently, I'd put my money on EAD.
All the botw praise is annoying, it has to be one of the most boring games I played this year. Bland open world not really worth exploring. The master sword felt like any other breakable weapon, it just ran out of energy instead of breaking. I'm not even trying to hate, it's true my brother also Never finished it for the exact same reasons. Boring as hell.
I seriously don't get it.
