The answer is yes. Seems like more evidence that the PS5 SSD was based on more hype than substance and so many bought into the hype. That doesn't mean SSDs weren't a great upgrade to newer consoles.
Why aren't they being called out for this? Their whole marketing was a lie.
I told @tormentos many times that it was just a lie, but he refused to believe it. Blinded by the hype as always.
ROFL
Sony lied about the SSD and the game.
Total fraudsters.
And? MS lied about having games.
The worst approved SSD is still much faster than SATA SSDs and mechanical drives on the PS4. If there was a way to get this game to run on an external drive then it would be a more interesting test.
Only console kids would
A) hype an ssd
and
B) act shocked when they find out they’ve been “tricked” by marketing
and
C) require a DF video to illustrate any of this
That would be good news if this means people can just get a cheaper SSD expansion and the performance is negligible.

Did they?

You serious? Look at the last 12 months🤣
@sheep99:
Bu but but I don't care if Sony lied it's quicker than Xbox in some games
Sony will be along shortly to give you your dry butt smashing session, don't forget to thank them
I'm sure that in a few years there'll be games that will start harnessing the true potential of the SSD (0 second load times? No more LOD pop-in?)
But for now this SSD looks fine, which is why I bought it.
By the time it'll be outpaced by speedier SSDs, those will have become way cheaper.
Thanks Digital Foundry!
No one cares, but especially the average consumer looking to purchase the PlayStation definitely does not care. Or know what an SSD even is
@louixiii: "Sony has been lying since the PS1 with the way they claim games will look on the back of the box versus how they actually looked in real time."
lol, what?
It's true. Remember the back of the PS1 box? They showed pictures of games on the back of it and they had a picture of Madden that looked like a PS3 game lol Then the supposed Toy Story graphics that didn't get here until generations later. Oh yeah, I remember all of that shit.

GamePass is full of games if they said they had games then they didnt lie.
Please give a factual example of when they said they had games but they didnt.

Here is a video that shows a game developer making a game that does what Ratchet & Clank does with portals running on a PS3. Psychonauts 2 also does portals and it doesn't need super-fast SSD speeds either.
i'm not surprised. pretty much as expected...within margin of error. R&C is still very much a brute force approach to using the SSD.
hopefully this is something DF keep an eye on as the gen goes on. as DF notes themselves: R&C is still very much a first gen PS5 game. it would be interesting to see if a more significant gap opens between using the bog standard SSD and the faster one + the internal one as time goes on. It would also be interesting to see if some games start to stutter more when using the slower SSD as time goes on for example.
the other thing of interest (and a possible actual lie from sony themselves...only time will tell but so far certainly a lie): they claimed that you would need a 7GB/s SSD to meet the performance of the PS5s internal SSD due to the internal controller going beyond the nvme spec basically. yet the min spec supported for the external SSD is 5.5GB/s (the same as the read rate of the internal SSD). the 7GB/s SSD tested generally seems to come out on top. sooo......whats the story there?
@Pedro: Ouch. Great way to spend some R&D money.
There was no money lost in R&D. They hyped the SSD to high heavens because MS had the advantage in all other relevant areas. If MS was weaker they wouldn't have hyped the SSD as much as they did and would have also focused on GPU + CPU + memory.
It's great that consoles finally got SSDs; it's a huge boon that they didn't even realize they were missing out on, but yeah, the hype that blind fanboyism creates is insane. Us PC nerds repeatedly said it doesn't matter how fast it is, it's going to be a miniscule difference versus other SSDs, but they just wouldn't listen.
@louixiii: "Then the supposed Toy Story graphics that didn't get here until generations later."
I don't recall the PS1 situation but I do remember the Toy Story graphics.
I had an og PS1 and remember the pictures on the back of the box. The pictures were actually fake and touched up a lot. It was still a great console and the games were fun but it goes to show that even Sony exaggerate at times. Doesn't mean I don't support the brand but I'm all about the games.

I think there are two different arguments here. The techniques are different where one is relying on smart streaming techniques while the other relies on storage transfer speeds. When Insomniac says they can't build this on previous gens it means they can't build it the way they wanted to without creating techniques that mimic instant loading.

R&C isn't relying on the transfer speeds alone. It's using the same techniques that all game developers have been using for decades, nothing new or game changing here. SSD/IO is fast but it isn't fast enough, not even close.

Or it could be a case of no game maxing out the speed.
Hell lets say they don't find a scenario were they would need to use that full speed, just because it is 7000mb doesn't mean all game will max that or get close to it.

Firstly, it doesn't instantly load and what was the context of their comment?

Your eyes are now open. You're free to live your life.
Funny how Xbox fans down play ssd. Like they still want the hard drive. Ssd is the best thing that this next gen has over last gen. I love having no load times with ps5 first party titles. Not one has has a load screen. Even fast travel is one second.
Even ps4 games updated to krakken has no load screens.
So it does what its suppose to do load fast enough not to have a load screen.
Its like we are back to cartridges.
So what they lied. Like saying Xbox never lied for marketing. What happen to the cloud that makes games run ten times better.

The spin was after the info releases from MS and Sony. Money was spent to create the SSD in the PS5.
