like in the final fantasy movie?

or do video games have a long way to go before they can be thought as a movie and a video game put together?

What do you mean, like Pixar? Still a bit to go I guess, though some tech demos on PC look almost Pixar quality.

i mean you know how metal gear solid 4 was trying to be a movie and a video game put together, as well as, god of war 3... do you think video games have reached a level of graphics where it can be thought as a movie as well as a game... or a movie you can direct

No, because they have to be rendered in real time and every frame can't be polished like in a movie.

And like Heavy Rain? I would say so, in a way. Though I can see them being more limited than movies, seeing as they're games I suppose they would have to be somewhat action orientated, maybe in the future people would like to play some "romance" game and all those other obscure genres. Shawshank Redemption in a Heavy Rain style would be cool though.

Not really. However it must be stressed that much of the illusion is movement and working out the curvature of the geometry through shaders or having a higher vertex through-put. The other problem is that movie graphics have become alot better too. CGI from the early to mid-nineties looks pretty piss-poor versus what we have today accept in the best instances like Jurassic Park, Independence day or the Special Editions of the original Star Wars trilogy. They had to deal with even higher rendering times to get their quality.

ok im not talking about photorealistic quality graphics like in jurassic park and star wars. final fantasy wasnt photorealistic, it had a computer graphics feel and artsy type of art style to it, unlike the photorealistic stuff like in the matrix. movies back in the early 50's and 30's used stop animation and clay figures for movies like king kong and godzilla...and thats what final fantasy can be compared to, but do you think it can be the new stop animation and clay movies for the new millenium as well as games?

If your talking about the latest CGI they will never match the latest CGI when it is new. The reason is CGI is always getting better with new technology.

But if you talk about CGI from the 90s I would say PC games are close maybe next generation. Console I think two gens from now.

We'll see something close at the end of next generation. The generation after that, I strongly believe we'll see something with roughly the graphics capability to handle all that.

Well, IMO Crysis looks better than a lot of movies' CG effects, to say nothing of pure CG movies like Toy Story.

Its never going to match. Because when people figure out how to do certain things in real time, pre-rendered will go up in quality in parallel. And most of the time new techniques are derived from what people have been doing in pre-rendered anyways. So yea probably(notice probably) one day we'll have video games on the visual bar of avatar, but by then CGIs will have gone a ton of notches too.

Pre-rendered CGI will always beat real time CGI. But maybe we'll get to a point where they look similar.

Exactly, Pixar crashes render farms, there's no way a console (or PC) could ever get to that point.

If they make games to be like a movie then yes, as for image quality no way, but if they wanted to make a videogame movie then they could do it at will... It just won't be sold as a videogame rather like that History channel "game" that showed how WWII was really like.

This.

It's ridiculous for people to think that they will be the same without compromises like, future crappy CGI movies, comparisons to old CGI, or any other kind of "detour" a smartass could think of.

I agree because some movies that are pure CGI take a few hours to Render every scene. Also movies they have too many polygons for videogames.

Im thinking PS6 in-game graphics will equal Final Fantasy 13s CGI graphics.
