I'm curious to what Wii owners think of this. Do you care for online gaming with the Wii? 360's experience for online is super. And PS3's online is still in baby stages, but in progress to be better (Home in particular. At least Sony is thinking of creating their online experience rather than just sitting back). Thoughts?

IMO, the Wii can easily take this gen with a great online service. But without it, they have a chance, but the race will be much tighter.

I don't even like gaming online (other than Counter-Strike ;)), but that's what I think...

At this point, I don't even care. The Wii has been dissapointing for me--it didn't live up to the hype, in my opinion: and without a strong online interface, my feelings towards it are worse.

The only game I want to play online (and even then I don't want to play it online that much) is SSBB

EDIT:

I should add that I am really looking foward to SMG if what I heard was true about 2 people being able to play it.

YES......they are doin it now without any........they dont need strong online support they can do around it. There are just titles that will need online to make an impact and Nintendo and other Developers will incorporate that. Nintendo got alot of franchises that are just asking for the support. They will get it.

Im not too big of an online gamer. Just like Ganon_919 said, the only online game i USED To play a lot was CS.

i play the ocassional match of MKDS, Diddy kong racing, or metroid online, so its good enough for me.

mario party would be good online, but it still doesn't beat the feeling of competition with your competitors live next to you. i do like online though, and i play them a lot. i makes me feel part of the community but it just doesn't give you the feeling of being next to your friends

Seriously IMHO online is very over-rated on consoles. Most of the genres don't belong to be online to begin with.

And before you attack me like a blind fanboy, read my sig.

I agree. How many of the 110 million PS2 owners took their PS2's online? Even on the Xbox where online gaming was more the focus the vast majority of Xbox owners did not have live.

See it's not the fact that gamers care about online it's that they're told to care about online. I mean no offense how many people were brought an HDTV to play Halo 2 and Conker at 1080i or Soul Caliber 2 at 720p?

No. It won't be evident until later into the console's life, but if the Wii abandons online play, it will fall as quickly as it rose. This generation is the ushering of HD and the standardization of online distribution. Online is a must when games are taking longer and longer to make. What do you think has been holding over all the 360 owners until their games of choice come out? Nintendo has said they are going to bring some of their major franchises online, and its good that they are, but they shouldn't think for a second they can get away without it, because they can't.

Mario Strikers Charged is out in a couple of weeks in Europe (June 7th in Australia), that has a great online mode from what has been shown with matchmaking, leaderboards, ranked and unranked (which is available for playing friends) matches and so on. Plus Pokemon Battle Revolution will also be coming out next month in the US so anyone who says online doesn't exist doesn't know anything.

Yes, easily. Online gaming still is nowhere near as big as hardcore gamers make it out to be. The vast majority of console owners don't play online.

It's not even important either. Who cares if a fighting game isn't online? It was never ment to be. Metroid Prime 3 online? It's a FIRST PERSON ADVENTURE. I think that's why PC's are the biggest platform online

#1 Because it's genres fit it *Split Screen RTS's/MMORPG's?*

#2 It's hard to bring your massive desktop to your friends house :P

I mean I've seen countless gamers on here claiming that they won't buy a game since it's online got cancelled, no offense but that's just ridiculous.

Online is really not that important. It's just another form of multi-player.

Alright. That's a fair choice of words. But let me ask you something in return. Would Gears of War be still popular today if there was zero online functionality? Halo? FF XI? Empire at War? World of Warcraft? C&C3?

All, ALL, everyone of those games would be hampered by split-screen. Many console games like fighters are not. Especially N games.

Online is cool and always accepted. If a game has online, great. But if it deos not and the multi-player runs fine on a single screen, then a lack of online really doesn't bother me.

I've been online gaming since 1996 so for me it's pretty important, but I think for a majority of gamers it's still just a "nice feature", but not a make or break option.

That's too bad. I'd probably destroy you with her and her wall blocks. She's my favorite but not my best character ;) My Kazuya on the other hand. Sucks for you. I'd pound you every time with three eleectric wind godfists. A four or maybe fifth if you're close to the wall.

Weren't many of these games tailored for multiplayer?

Let me allow you to think about something, though.  You list many PC/Xbox/PS2 games.  However, isn't WarioWare very popular?  isn't it best for multiplayer?  However, no online, yet an amazing experience nonetheless.

I think what many people are missing is what Nintendo has hit on with Wiisports and WarioWare.  Online functionality may be important for certain multiplayer experiences, but there can exist specific designs that bring back the glory of living room multiplayer.  You can list all the games you like, but Wii won't be about Halos or WoW, which put quite an emphasis on online play.

I'm an agressive girl when it comes to Tekken ;) It really all depends on your opener. You gotta have a few that start either low or high. Brian Fury is a great example of that.  Julia as well.

I would say online really isn't my thing, but I still want the option.  I do not want online for an rpg or a platformers, but I do for racers and FPS. (I like adventure games, rpgs, and platformers btw).  Just a side note, nintendo is making an effort, and will have a solid online experience by 2008.  That is late, but really the other consoles wont have that either>> until the userbases of the consoles gets in the 20million+ range online would no be that worthwhile imo.

I would say that most likely anykind of online Nintendo will have will be broken anyway so I would say no it does not need it. Why Nintendo seem so happy to put friend codes in everything like the DS online, pretty much making it broken in my eyes

I was promised online with the Gamecube... guess what never happened? The Dreamcast had PSO online *for free* - and even the online setup CD let you play Sega Swirl competively - even via email with PC users. Yet the 'cube completely skipped the online phenomenon...

Beyond this, the Wii is simply putting the same games (metroid, smash, animal crossing, pokemon, et cetera) out there again, only *this time* we have a semblance of an online? Bleck...

LIVE was heaven when I first found it on my Xbox - it put a layer of dust on my 'cube that it has never shaken... now for offline, there's a different story, but Nintendo online - the DS, the Wii, is pretty sad - it needs to feel like I'm playing against humans, remove some of that protection so that it matters that I'm playing a person and not AI.

Who cares if a fighting game isn't online? :| Something very very wrong with that statement.

hotdaisy18

No nothings wrong with that statement at all, the whole point of a fighting game and what made it popular was that people battle face to face with one another; it's like playing an MMORPG LAN you really aren't getting the full taste of the genre not playing one on one, also unbalances and glitches aren't let through *like they are in every online fighter, finally the littest lag destroys the experience.

I mean online won't ruin the game it's not like you have to play online. But say that every fighter has to have online as a mandartory just doesn't make sense.

If you still don't believe me then there's a reason why 90% of fighting games aren't online.

It will survive for the whole 2 or so months before it gets online, sure.kittykatz5k

Seriously. It has about 2 months before it has online games. I think it will make it.

That may be true but here in the US, arcades are a dying breed. Online is needed soon. Verry soon.

I don't think it would do them any harm to create an excellent online service, but if they completely screw up what ever attempt finally comes around, then there wil be an impact. If they don't try or do a good job, it shouldn't affect them.

i genuinely hope not.  at some point, nintendo has to think about the loyal gamer and make him happy, and currently, i'm not happy.

yes, because who would buy the wii for online games?!!?!?! everyone that bought it, had in mind either zelda and mario style games and wii sports games...offline.....u really think the wii will pull online?!!?!?and even if it does it will be miles apart from the simplicity of xbox live or for that matter the ps3 network
