I definitely don't agree. It took me fourteen and a half hours to beat and I'm currently on my second playthrough on Madhouse Difficulty.

I don't agree with you at all. It's not personal but the trend of being cavalier and reductive about games in an attempt to look like a know it all on the internet is beginning to sicken me the more I see it. Especially when the info is grossly misinformed and the games of high quality.

In what part was I being reductive? I've seen several people play through this thing. 7-9 hours on average to complete it and starting over offers nothing new. Even that one choice you make in the game doesn't change anything in terms of gameplay. You can't compare yourself with the general public, who don't care much for a difficulty increase and looking over every inch, in a horror game. You know the scripted scares, you know the story, you know the puzzles.

Nothing personal on my side either, but I think it's a normal conclusion to think that this game made impressive numbers cause it's such good horror, people see the quality. Normally 10 hours for 60 bucks doesn't cut it these days. Being surprised can be a positive thing.

"I'm surprised it moved that many units for a 7 hour game with no replay value"

^^That's where you were being reductive, as is the assumption that the game is composed of only jump scares when it's actually structured more like your typical pre RE4 Resident Evil game. Games where multiple playthroughs have always been the norm regardless of when and where the scares are coming from. Judging this game on a different metric is simply wrong.

Again, it took me 14 and a half hours to beat on normal (so you can add that and average it out in terms of what you've "seen") and Madhouse difficulty provides a very different experience in terms of item placement, higher difficulty, and the extra added strategy of managing saves Ink Ribbon style via the cassettes. Not to mention the "Albert" Gun and Defensive Scroll that you get just for beating it and if you beat it in under four hours, the running shoes. These second round bonuses aren't out of place for a Resident Evil game and are more than enough to inspire multiple playthroughs for fans of the series.

You can blame YouTube and Twitch for that, at least partly.

So many horror games now feel like they're designed around those two platforms, and RE7 has borrowed a lot from games like Evil Within, Outcast and P.T, which whether intentional or not has also led it down the path of YouTube bait.

Fact is, watching someone else play a horror game is hilarious, and arguably more enjoyable than actually playing them. I myself have been watching GameGrumps playing RE7 with PSVR and it's one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time.

For me personally though, I just don't like the new tropes in Horror games, the last one I played and actually enjoyed was Alien Isolation, and even that fell victim to some of those, they just managed to carry it better than most others, and used IP really well.

It's funny how companies have no problem not listening to employees when there are plenty other people waiting in line who can replace them, but with investors it is tricky. Oh dear, what if the investors are not happy. (I thought there were plenty of investors in the world?)

It almost makes you wonder if this effect cannot be mirrored with employees. Say: If you fire people or do not extend their temporary contracts or people leave, new employees you want to hire will cost you more for some time. As an incentive to care about treating employees well.

BTW I know I don't know anything about economics. It doesn't stop me from wondering if things couldn't work better with some changes and I always love hearing why that wouldn't work. I'm not pretending to understand any of it.

@wildcats7566: Outbreak 1 & 2 are both third person and were actually really well done. Lots of fun online when the servers were up. The previous FP games in the series were RE Survivor (PS1) and RE Dead Aim (PS2) as well as a couple Japan only Biohazard games. Those were definitely all shit.

On topic, I'm kind of happy to see this game fail. It shouldn't have a seven in the title. It's obviously a side game pandering to the VR hype. There are none of the previous characters in this game (yeah, the guy at the end is NOT who he says).

Those complaining about length are idiots. Other than RE6, none of the RE games were especially long; I can beat the first three in 3 hours or less, the first in 90 minutes. Game length doesn't denote quality.

Graphics look great, but this is an RE side game, nothing more, nothing less.

Not surprising, all the games I played after the 3rd were total pile of shit, and the movie franchise is a turd as well.

Like I said, you can't compare yourself to the average consumer among the 2.5 million that play this. Those fans are a fraction of those sales. For most this will be a horror game to get scared. "No replay value, for most" is more accurate. I honestly didn't know they did the limited saves thing here as well, but I don't see most people buying the game being interested in that.

No open world, no multiplayer, still sold surprisingly well at that pricetag, was my point. I've seen the Matrix franchise over 10 times, you won't hear me say you will definitely care about director's commentary and other extra's because it's about the movie. There's a point of generalization in sales numbers, which is what I did. I get what you're saying though, the game has more to it than I think, but not care about. The Matrix does too, and people should watch it at least 3 times to get the full experience.

You might be on to something. Its seems people do enjoy watching these games a bunch. I know of some people who refuse to play them, but doesnt mind watching others play.

So what does this mean? RE8 goes back to it's call of duty ways? :P

The hope is that goes back to how RE1,2,and 3 were.

Game is solid, a good take at mouse-and-cat-horror with the ability to fight back. I don't know if I want to try it at the hardest difficulty :D BUT Capcom will probably leave it at that, release the expansions and return to the path that RE4 (which was ****** sweet) set and ultimately ended up being **** like RE6. I mean even RE5 wasn't that special, a bit of a bore IMO. RE needed this change IMO, but the investors will probably force Capcom to go back.

The thing is RE7 was Capcom's attempt at those games with a first person view twist.. Now that they see that it's not selling up to standard, it seems likely that they'll go straight back to the RE4 formula.

I'll wait for a price drop and then.. Maybe. I played through the demo a few times and just couldn't get into it. It was RE by name alone.. IMO. And I've been playing RE games for a VERY long time (since the first one on the PSOne). This feels like PT or what Silent Hill Nexgen Should've been..

It was a pretty poor attempt then. 1ST person,no zombies,a new character nobody knows or cares about, cant even see his face, lack of original characters, shitty, boring bosses and hillbilly antagonists. This thing they call RE7 should have been more like the original 3 and CV with some extra goodies like a new game+ with all guns with infinite ammo,or adding stuff like the Hunk storyline in RE2,A different but same story but from different perspective,LIKE RE2 DID.

I've heard that Ethan existed in the series before RE7. Is this correct?

Doesn't really look like a Resident Evil game. I know games change but most still keep core mechanics that are franchise signatures like atleast one zombie would be nice.

@lilhurk1985187: Well once you finish it you can unlock a gun and some defensive stuff. I don't know what you can unlock if you finish it under 4h.

I liked it because it is survival like the first 4 games ( very few stuff, limited space etc ) and it is horror and scary. The house is crippy, the father chasing you in the house, the fight with Mia with the knife and the chainsaw ... the fucking boat ...

there is at least two ending possible.

RE4, despite the critical acclaim, initially started off with slow sales, before it picked up through strong word-of-mouth and eventually became a big hit. The same could happen for RE7, which has critical acclaim and is picking up some strong word-of-mouth.
