Sorry if old.

Found this in Kotaku.

Capcom made quite a splash in 2008 when their near reboot of Street Fighter IV combined the depth and detail of 3D graphics placed over the traditional controls and mechanics of a 2D fighting game.

The developers liked the 2.5D effect so much they decided to apply it to upcoming Wii fighter Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars and producer Ryota Niitsuma tells Kotaku that all Capcom fighting games for the foreseeable future will also use the visual effect.

"I think that was the best way to present the Capcom and Tatsunoko characters to their fullest," Niitsuma said through a translator. "I think at Capcom one of our specialties is 2D fighting action and we have had a great history of making games like that.

"The 3D models on a 2D plane is a very good match and all of the (game) systems are capable of supporting such a feature. When making such games we can show our knowhow. Going out into the future I can't say it will remain like this forever, but for the forseeable future I can see us making our games in this ****"

In some ways, giving Capcom games 3D graphics without messing with the company's fighting system allows them to update the look of the game without reinventing them. But Niitsuma says that isn't the biggest challenge he faces as a fighting game producer.

"I think one problem that fighting games have is that there is a real split between hard-core fighting game fans and casual gamers," he said. "I don't think there has been a game made that addresses that divide. You have a lot of good fighting games out there, but the problem is that the learning curve is pretty intense. You have these casual fighting fans who get overwhelmed by that."

"From here on out whenever we are making a fighting game the challenge is to make a game that appeals to fighting game fans and draw in new fans. That's my a personal challenge."

So do you think its a good move for Capcom??

After playing SFIV and seeing TvsC, i say, yes good move Capcom.

Still, good old 2D delivers some fine stuffs like Blazblue and KOFXII (the gameplay is great)

As a daily reader of kotaku...all this reposting of kotaku (and destructoid) articles is getting kind of old

Either way, I don't think that 2.5D should be the ONLY way to go. I mean, I guess it worked for SFIV, but I still thought that Blazblue looked better

I think 2D fighter is where the genre is best.. To me something loses out in the translation to 3d fighters, where strategy and the like seems to be dumbed down or convoluted.. I have yet to see a system in which a 3d fighter outperformed a 2d fighter like Street Fighter..

Sorry for the reposting, but sometimes you need to know that not everyone go to Kotaku to read the gaming news.

As long as the fighting plane is in 2D I'm totally fine with it. No one does 2D fighting better than Capcom imo. I would extend that to all fighting games since most of my favorite fighters come from Capcom.

Honestly, I'd much rather 2d than 2.5d. Even so, worse things could happen.

...And I'm still praying for MvC3 and a new Street Fighter Alpha.

All so called 3D fighters are essentially 2.5 D anyway, so I think they're just being honest. Take Tekken or DOA... aside from the one 'side-step' move, it plays just like sprite-based 2D fighting games from years passed.

I do not mind at all. Capcom sucks at creating 3D fighters and Street Fighter 4 was a great game. I say good move on Capcom.

Yeah.. I remember the 3-D fighting games on the PS2. What a mess. Their best fighter where the -VS- games with tagteam. I loved that. SFIV was good though. I still couldn't get some of the specials to work, even in practice mode.

Are you talking about the EX games? Those weren't made by Capcom. They were published by 'em, however. And Rival Schools/Project Justice were pretty competent fighters. I'd like to see a sequel, perhaps made in this 2.5d style Capcom is talking up.

Super Smash Bros. does a great job supporting hardcore players and casual players. I am not much of a fan of the genre but Super Smash Bros. is great. I think that they should make more fighting games with popular characters and recognizable maps like in smash bros. but keep the 2d, 1 vs 1 gameplay in tact so it attracts all fans. Capcom is already half way there with Marvel vs. Capcom.

That sidestep alone imo dumbs downt eh mechanics because they have to make room for this one, and most times 3d games their characters seem really floaty when jumping.

Indeed. Look what happened when they (or Arika) tried to do the Street Fighter EX series in 3D. Didn't work out very well for them.

The EX series was made by Arika, not Capcom. Capcom just published 'em and allowed them to use SF characters. Why? I do not know.

:P I still do not know why Capcom did not check for quality, because other than the awesomeness that was Garuda, those EX games were just fail. However, as 3D fighting games go for Capcom, Rival Schools/Project Justice and Power Stone were quite good.

I agree that these games are really good. (Well to me they are) I'm probably one of the biggest Power Stone fans here so take my word lightly on this :P

I loved Rival Schools...As a matter of fact, I still play it. It's a pretty good 3D fighter, yet almost no one I've talked to knows about it....It's a shame, really.

SSF4 will be better. Capcom always seems to make the best adjustments with in the different series of SF.

Third Strike

Super Turbo II

Alpha 3

SSF4 and what ever else comes after will make us all forget about Street Fighter 4. I'm really excited cause I never liked the first installment of the SF game as much as I love SF4. People always compare Third Strike to IV. But I say Compare the first Street Fighter 3 to SF4 in it's current state.

I enjoyed the Power Stone games when they originally were released on the Dreamcast proper 3D arena based combat excellent gameplay, also the Rival School games were very good. Maybe its not that they can't make good 3D fighting games, its more a case of Street Fighter doesn't work as a 3D fighting game?!
