  • Game info
  • Developer: Mercury Steam
  • Publisher: Konami
  • Game engine: Mercury Engine 2
  • Producer: Dave Cox
  • Genre: Action-adventure, hack and slash.
  • Platforms: Microsoft window (Retail and digital download), PS3 and Xbox 360.
  • Release date: February 25th for North America and February 28 worldwide.

  • Setting

The game will be set 1000 years after the 1st Lords of Shadow game, after Gabriel Belmont becomes the new Lord Dracula.

Zobek, the lord of the necromancers, comes to seek Dracula to warn him about Satan's inmminent return, and Dracula must begin searching for his long lost powers if he is to stand a chance against him.

The world will be mostly set in a present day European city that strikes a balance between classic Gothic architecture and more contemporany city vibe, and of course: Dracula's castle will also be a major part of the game's enviroment.

Some of the game's enviroments.

  • Gameplay

Lords of Shadow 2 will be signifficantly longer than the 1st game (which means something, since the 1st game took about 20 hours to complete) and will now feature a seamlessly open world where players will be able to choose where they want to go next (Although some areas requires certain power ups to access). A lot of the areas will have certain sections locked to encourage revisiting of previous areas with new power ups to collect any items missed.

Combat has been rebalanced from the previous game, and it will now play at a faster pace, Dracula is much more agile than Gabriel from the 1st game and so the combat system requires a heavier use of your reflexes to overcome your foes.

The light and dark magic systems have been replaced with different weapons that will largely serve the same function as magic from the previous game. Dracula's main arsenal will consist of the Blood whip, which is very similar to the combat cross from the previous game, it is a mid-long ranged weapon that is able to deal direct damage to a single foe, or area damage to several of them.

The void sword, which replaces the light magic from the previous game, is a short-mid ranged weapon that allows for a slight increase in damage while also enabling lifesteal to heal yourself during combat, however, each strike with the void sword will reduce your Void magic meter, once it hits zero, you will not be able to use the void sword anymore unless you recharge the meter.

The Shadow Claws, which are a fiery pair of claw-like gauntlets, will replace the shadow magic from the previous game, they are able to sunder enemy armor and deal inflicted damage, however their range is very short and so you need to get close and personal to your opponent to use it, putting you at risk of being hurt. As with the void sword, each strike with the shadow claws will reduce your shadow magic meter.

Unlike the previous game, every weapon is different and so they all have unique and different combos. The game allows for combination between direct and area attacks and for mid-combo weapon swap to enable longer, more powerful combinations.

Every weapon in the game gets power ups as you progress, which enables new skills with them, for example: The void sword can be upgraded with the ability to freeze water or foes, so that Dracula can focus on a single enemy while disabling others.

Adittionally, new moves and combos may be unlocked with experience points to increase Dracula's power.

Oh and, no more fixed camera :) The camera is now free and can be rotated 360 degrees.

Gameplay video

The soundtrack will be composed once again by the award winning Oscar Araujo, who did a marvelous job with the previous games of the saga. You can preview some of the music here.

  • Developer's diaries (More insight on gameplay, artistic direction, enviroment and plot).

Pre-order link for PS3 and 360

Windows/Steam pre-order not availible yet

Thank you for reading throughout the thread! I highly recommend this game if you're a fan of the saga or the genre, even the previous one if you haven't played it, it has an inmense value and it's truly an incredible game, I hope it does well both in critics and in sales!

Also please forgive me for the sloppy look of the thread, the new forums don't allow much for customization or formatting so I had to go with a very basic look.

So fucking retarded.

Well it does offer an alternate version of existing Castlevania lore, yet uses existing characters (Alucard)... I haven't played LoS 1 and the only Castlevania games I've played were the NES ones and SOTN, so I do think the parallel canon is unnecessary.

So if you had played the other castlevania games you'd know that the saga was already at a dead end...

Here's a quick synopsis on the latest games of the saga so that you realize how dumb they were getting:

Dracula was finally destroyed in 1999, permanently, but a prophecy comes up that when its like 2026 dracula will be reincarnated in another person, so some dude in japan gets asked out to a temple by his girl and he goes there and the temple suddenly becomes dracula's castle, the guy travels around the castle and finds the guy who is supposed to be the reincarnated dracula because he was born the same day on which dracula was destroyed (So his soul was transferred to him). Then at the end we find out that: surprise! the guy wasn't dracula, it was you all the time, though you manage to repel the impulse to become dracula with the power of love, then you go to destroy the living entity that controls the castle.

then some years later, some sect kidnaps your girl to force you into becoming the new lord dracula.

yeah, thats how it went.

First game was bland as hell despite being incredibly pretty. It also never felt like a Castlevania game. Just God of War in Castlevania garb. Hopefully Gamespot recognizes that this time around. I'm quite glad this is MecurySteam's last entry in the franchise.

Castlevania Lords of Shadow is so much better than GOW3 or Ascension. The narrative, gameplay, soundtrack, length and variety of CLoS are simply better than that found in the God of War games.

As far as the similarities between CLoS and GOW, well God of War didn't invent those things in the first place.

In any case, CLoS is very much like an updated Castlevania Lament of Innocence and that game came out like 2 years before God of War.

The gods of war man sucks. He is just a fantasy version of a angry xboxlive gamers on call of duty kid given muscles and power to appeal them. Gabriel has a beautiful Scottish voice and is pure of hart. He is dammed for his goodness. Kratos is just a big prick.

You shouldn't try to say that your opinion represents the 100% of the fandom.

"Completely dead"

I lol'd. Because Dawn of Sorrow and Order of Ecclesia weren't huge successes on the DS.

Konami wanted the "Call of Duty" audience for Castlevania to make it more relevant in the mainstream, so they got MercSteam to make a God of War clone with the CV namesake on it.

I played Lament of Innocence. I loved Lament of Innocence (not as much as Curse of Darkness). I tried about 5 times to get into Lords of Shadow but got stopped dead in my tracks by the excessively boring gameplay and "safe" design choices (in addition to the very generic art design and musical arrangements). God of War popularized the gameplay type that LoS takes full advantage of. Kill.Switch "invented" the cover gameplay that made Gears of War a smashing success... but we rarely see people talk about Kill.Switch.

There was nothing in LoS that screamed "CASTLEVANIA!" at me. It was just another hack-n-slash action game that didn't do anything badly, but didn't do anything greatly either. I wanted to love the game, and still try to get into it every once in a while, but I just can't seem to find the patience to put up with the generic nature and the lack of anything Castlevania about it.

Even Ninja Theory's DmC: Devil May Cry reboot had a ton of stuff in it that paid homage to the originals with their own unique spin on them. It was different (and much easier), but it wasn't generic and incredibly run of the mill.

The franchise was completely dead, are you going to deny that?.

DoS (I'd preffer PoR btw) is a game from 2006, OoE is from 2008. There were no mainstreams castlevanias created after that, OoE sold poorly, there was even a Castlevania title in the making before LoS that got cancelled. Konami was ready to scrap the franchise.

Also I could never get into OoE, now that didn't felt like a Castlevania game to me.

My friends, I don't agree. Lords Of Shadow has many, many puzzles. Almost as many puzzles as large battles. For this day and age, it is a fairly intelligent game. Especially for the action genre. The voice acting and tone is Shakespearean much like the Legacy Of Kain titles. It's aiming for a more mature and patient audience than Call of And Duty and God Of war. This is most likely why many of the young people on system wars show apathy. They aren't use to this level of sophistication from the genre.

Can't say that I'm excited about this game. I thought that the first Lords of Shadow was a piece of shit so I don't plan on playing the sequel.

Hopefully after this game comes out Konami will return to the real Castlevania timeline and we can forget this lords of shit timeline.

The first lords wasn't very good at all. Even from an objective viewpoint the pacing was all over the place.

How do you even make an objective point of view about how a game is?

So what are you saying? That those who liked LoS are crazy fools or something like that?

Good for you. I really liked Lament of Innocence, but Lords of Shadow is so much better. The story it tells is awesome, the combat is strategic and rewarding, the soundtrack is one of the best I've ever heard in a game, the graphics and art direction are some of the best around (how you can call these things "generic" is beyond me), the game is long and varied, and the final boss battles result in one of the most epic endings in any game.

@Sandulf29

Played the demo several times yesterday on my PC and it looks and pays amazingly well. It doesn't seem to be much more demanding than the first CLoS, except in cutscenes. I think it has some of the best graphics, if not the best graphics, of the generation.

You can also pre-order at greenmangaming, along with an extra 20% off if you use the following voucher:

3MCRLE-CG7AF1-G7T08U

Making the game very cheap to pre-order. Wish I could do it myself, but unfortunately the pre-order is only for the NA :(

You mean it doesn't have a pre-order button on greenmangaming ?

That's because you're viewing it outside North America, same here... Wished I could apply the yougscast voucher too :P

I asked them on Twitter what was up and they had this to say:

'Unfortunately we only have it available for North America, mate'

'Unfortunately we won't be getting it for anywhere other than North America for the foreseeable future, sorry bud'

Sure, Lords of Shadow's soundtrack is good in the sense it's a very generic, well-produced orchestral soundtrack that's in pretty much every fantasy game these days... but to put it over other Castlevanias, especially that of LoI and SOTN?

I... I... don't even know what to say.

I never said the game wasn't good. In fact, it's pretty damn good and very well-made... but it isn't "Castlevania". Not in the slightest sense of the word. Even with Patrick Stewart's extremely sexually moving narrations that always stir something inside me... it still isn't Castlevania to me.

And while I haven't been a CV fan for long, I've invested probably a good 1000+ hours into Symphony of the Night and Curse of Darkness over the past few years.

Loved the first one, my GOTY for 2010, yup above God Of War 3 and Im a huge fan for the GOW series, in fact GOW series is on my top 5 series of all time and I enjoyed LOS more than GOW3 that year.

Ofcourse Im more of a Castlevania fanboy so thats why I liked it more but honestly, it was awesome on it's own merits, the story, the voice acting, the epic adventure, the huge bosses ( which screams Castlevania since it had gigantic bosses before GOW was even born ) and dat fantastic ending.

For me at the least it's the best 3D Castlevania in the series, the biggest factor that was missing was Yamane, the OST was below average compared to what Michiru Yamane is capable of producing, she's the best composer in the gaming industry imho.

Can't wait for LOS2.

Yes, I have. Great stuff. But I still think Oscar Araujo's score is superior.

I'll forgive your blasphemy, though, since you have that cool Nathan Fillion/Malcolm Reynolds avatar. I'm a die-hard Browncoat.

I just played the demo. The camera pans out way too far, the graphics are shitty, the sound and combat are great; but it doesn't give me near the feeling of epicness I've experienced when I played LOS1.

Seems meh.

On another note, COD will save gaming this year.
