Let me first say i actually dont play casual games. I dislike kinect very much, and im fond of the occassional unique wii title, but the consoles casual nature makes it hard for me to invest in the console. Im really more of the type of person that likes to storm Battlefield multiplayer in the morning, poor some blood on the floor in mortal kombat in the evening, and then at night I sneak into towns in Fallout 3 and kill people in there sleep. So, yeah. Im not a casual gamer haha
I think most of you guys already know this, but i want to promote the fact the game industry NEEDS to have casual games. They dont need it so that they can make you have more quality time with your grandma. Its neccesssary for the sake of the evolution of the game industry, and if gamers discourage companies from doing their job and attracting a larger fanbase, it hurts everyone.
Looking to the past and compare it to today, you will notice easily that gaming has changed and become more more popular. Back in the day, a video game didnt getting millions of dollars in advertising, tv commercials, big premeirs at time square, and the like. And with the expanision of the gaming industry, video games have attracted plenty of entrepenuers to realize that there is great money to be made in the industry. And thus it is with the indsutrys gradually increasing stability and consistenly growing population of potential customers that companies have become more inclined to spend millions upon millions to stimulate the industrys growth. There was a leap somewhere in game history where video game turned from being the thing geeks to do to become a huge entertainment business.
That was a leap in the industry, and casual games are the next one. I would think lots of gamers would be pleased with the fact that practically half the houses in America have a video game console in them. Gamers like the growth of this industry. Therefore, it wouldmake alot of sense to actually encourage game indsutries to continue making casual kinect games and sesame street wii games. Why not? Obviously nobody here is going to buy them, but companies need to do these things to have the industry expand and evolve. Its like recruiting an army, you cant just limitan army to men of extremely specific features. I think gamers would rather that the rest of the world adjust to the games we play, instead of us adjusting to them. But thinkng such things would be overestimating the ratio of hardcore gamers to casual gaming/ nongaming people in the world. To make that next evolutionary leap, gaming needs to becomne less of an industry confined to serving "geeks" and more of an industry for everyone. Like the movie industry, dvds are made for all kinds of people, not just horrow fans or kids or old folks. But when u buy a dvd, u buy the one suited for you, Thats what gaming needs, to be more open and knock down the walls of fanbase exclusitivity. The hammer to knock down that wall is casual games. You dont have to play them, just dont hate them. They are not meant for you. And yet, indirectly.....they are.
