CGI at that level takes months to render an entire film. Gaming doesnt have that time, but give it years of tech advancement and perhaps we'll get close

Did we really need a thread on this?ferret-gamer
No...
Also, I'm sorry but this nameless guy is really getting on my nerves. Every two month's he makes the same threads(Ex. piracy is killing PC gaming) and 1/3 of the time he actually comes up with new ones like this which aren't even needed.
Really, CGI will always be ahead of game graphics.

What should I say - I'm glad you like them? :P
Those GTA 4 screenshots looks good! Why can't developers of GTA 4 do this? Modder > GTA 4 Developers?
Because they focus on the consoles. Boris, who made the ENB mod for GTA 4, also made a version way back in 2005 for SA, and yet R* still didn't bother to take notice. Those GTA 4 screenshots looks good! Why can't developers of GTA 4 do this? Modder > GTA 4 Developers?

Technically every (most? idk) game from back then was what you call pre-rendered. They call them Sprites. DK's were just better than other games, theres no trickery or anything going on there. They still arent completely "pre-rendered" seeing as the engine has to place the sprites in the correct position, etc. So DK was nothing more than any other SNES game: a 2d rendering engine rendering per-rendered 3D images as sprites. Say that 3 times quickly :D[QUOTE="nosmokingbandit"][QUOTE="nameless12345"]
I imagine a rail-shooter or a heavy QTE based CGI game could work as a game. And don't forget Donkey Kong Country on the SNES which had pre-rendered graphics and wowed just about anyone back then.

Perhaps in the future we'll see even more merging of CGI and real-time graphics (especially on the consoles).
Probably not. Sprites really only work in 2d side-scrolling games because there are a lot of coinstants that can be faked. You dont need to render lighting in real time because the sprites can just have the appropriate lighting on them to begin with. Game maps now are far too dynamic to work well with pre-rendered parts.
Keep in mind that consoles are using video chipsets that are ancient by pc standards, and i dont say that to come across as a pc elitist. 2 generations from now we may see something like the gtx560Ti in consoles and they'd be able to render games like the super-modded GTA4 screenshots hermits post on occasion.
Still, this thread is a contender for the most pointless thread ever.

im still waiting for a cgi movie with realistic looking people and realistic animations
Snugenz
Say what you will about Avatar (as a movie experience) but the CGI in it was breathtaking, serious "uncanny valley" stuff imo.
the blue guys (while good looking) still look kinda fake like made of plastic or something and the animations specially the face ones doesnt look realistic ,imo
The Crysis 2 suit is CGI quality, literally, no flaws, anywhere.
Not to mention we're getting pretty impressive real time environments

The crysis 2 in-game suite is hardly CGI quality, and neither is cryengine 3. It is very nice, but don't get ahead of yourself, it is still a far cry from decent quality CGI.

I see what you did there.

The suit has no visible flaws, even up close in game. That is CGI, quality. You don't need to substitute bumpmapping for polygons and have millions of ploys to be CGI quality. And CE3, well isn't an CGI quality engine obviously, but it can run massive amounts of polys and still not crash.[QUOTE="ferret-gamer"][QUOTE="ocstew"]

And it is easy to tell it is a low poly game asset up close, and the material quality is nowhere near that of decent CGI.
These are in-game shots of FSX with REX:

Wow those are some nice screens. Not bad for a 2004 game. I have not heard of that mod before.

It just doesn't work like that. There's no way they can predict our actions in a game and pre-render the scene without any lag. It's not possible. It's called pre-rendering for a reason, and video games require real time rendering. The suit has no visible flaws, even up close in game. That is CGI, quality. I'm not sure what you mean by material quality. It's an environment probe that provides results that are almost as good as raytracing. Look, this is pretty good, when you realise that you're rendering 60 fps, and that CGI renders look marginally better and take minutes to render.OMG domething pre-rendered looks better thaan something rendered in real time?
