"New Challenger"
You know what this means?
IT'S REYN TIME!
Hoping they're gonna reveal Shulk if announcement means New Comer or Captain Falcon if "New Challenger" really means just another character.
I doubt they would make such a fuzz for a veteran.
I'm actually curious why they're waiting till Monday.
Why not Today during EVO?

Pretty weird enough they wouldn't do it on Sunday.
Hopefully it's either Bayonetta or Wonder Red.
Wonder Red is a trophy.
I'm rooting for Shulk.
Bayonetta would be weird.
Wonder Red, or any other character would fit right in. I don't expect any of those though.
I got a sneaking suspicion that it's going to be Bayonetta.
If they want Bayonetta 2 to sell, this would be an excellent way to market the game.
New challenger means new character in the series, probably.
Franchises like Star Fox, Earthbound and F-Zero have barely been mentioned with Smash 4 so far. My guess is that it's a new character in one of those franchises.
Gematsu leak says it's either Shulk, Rhythm Boys, or Chrom.
I like to keep my hype under check, as much as I want Shulk, i expect Rhythm Boys. But a designer of Xenoblade retweeted it and the VA still can't say what project he's doing, so it may be Shulk.

Link?

I hope not. That would make even LESS sense than Snake. Besides, I think SEGA would think Sonic is enough.

Considering that Bayonetta 2 wouldn't even exist without Nintendo, I think it makes perfect sense.

But yet, unlike Snake/Sonic/Mega Man/Pac-Man, she doesn't have much of a Nintendo "influence". I mean, sure the first game is going on the Wii U, but once you consider the fact that there's still Anarchy Reigns. Nintendo saving Bayo 2 is NOT a good enough reason.
When characters from Killer Instinct 3 were unveiled, there were threads about it. Not sure since when this kind of thread have been a problem......
Anyway, Bayonetta just wouldn't work imo. Would be weird.

What do you mean by Nintendo influence? because none of those characters really have anything to do with Nintendo, and a few of them are seen as mascots for other companies/systems that were/are in direct competition with Nintendo.
Plus, if they were to include Bayonetta, I think marketing would be a big reason for that. Just like when they included Marth and Roy in Melee to promote the approaching release of Fire Emblem 6 (it's is also the main reason the series came to NA). Pit being included in Brawl lead to a new Kid Icarus being made. People are begging for a new Earthbound and F-Zero when they barely held any interest before.
Smash Bros has huge marketing potential; People see new characters and want to see where they came from. Nintendo could very well be looking to generate more interest in Bayonetta.

I think it would make sense. They're funding Bayonetta 2 and putting her in Smash Brothers would help get the game publicity.
If it were a veteran, I guess it would be one of the original two: Captain Falcon or Jiggly Puff.
I wouldn't be surprised it were a combination announcement for a new character and one of the old ones.
Another one to consider is Dark Pit.
Dark Pit would probably be an alt for Pit, just as Dark Link was for Link. I know it doesn't make as much sense from a lore perspective, but mechanically, from SSB's perspective, that's what's more likely to happen.

How about being on their platforms long enough? Snake had four games (MG1 on NES, MG2: Solid Snake on NES, MGS/Ghost Babel on GBC, and MGS: Twin Snakes on GameCube), Sonic had countless (starting with either SA2 on GC or Sonic Advance on GBA), Pac and Mega Man have had games on Nintendo platforms since the NES.
Besides, what sense would it make for her to be on Smash even as a marketing tool considering both versions of Smash come out later than Bayonetta 2? By then, Bayo 2 will have been lost to the void.
We need another Metroid character.
THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY THE BABY
Guess there's not much need to be all that excited then I suppose. I mean I knew once I heard about this announcement that it wasn't going to be a veteran.
Chrom? or even better, Lucina? Plox?
Or Ness, just so the earthbound fans can shut up.
And Falcon for the F-Zero fans... oh wait, I'm one of them.

Sakurai missed a golden opportunity to reveal Falcon during the invitational, the hype would have been unreal
It's Shulk. Monolith Soft retweeted the announcement.
Not just specifically them but the character developer himself. He hasn't made a gaming related tweet since the Nintendo direct on which Xenoblade 2 (title?) was announced.

yes, but they represent other companies and systems more so than they do Nintendo. Snake has been on damn near every system out there and has a couple of Playstation exclusives; plus, MGS5 isn't coming to Nintendo. Sonic has been Mario's rival since the dawn of console gaming - the Sega/Nintendo rivalry being comparable to Sony/MS today, it's like throwing Master Chief into PSASBR. Pacman was simply ported to nearly every system ever made, I wouldn't call that "Nintendo influence." Megaman is the only one that belongs; he had his start with Nintendo and all of his games have been on Nintendo systems, many exclusive.
They're there because they're icons of gaming, not icons of Nintendo; and you say it makes more sense for them (Megaman aside) to be in a Nintendo mash-up than someone from a Nintendo exclusive being published by Nintendo themselves?
Last I checked, Bayonetta 2 is set for an October release, with no date specified; but seeing that the 3ds version of ssb is releasing on October 3rd, I somehow doubt that Bayonetta is releasing before it. But either way, Marketing works retroactively. Personally, ssb got me interested in a bunch of games that had been out for years: Metroid, Star Fox, Kid Icarus, F-Zero, etc.. Why can't ssb generate interest in a game releasing right around the same time when it can generate interest in games that have been out for years?
