"Chris Taylor: Well one of the key things that is really affecting the economics and the success of gaming in general is piracy on the PC. So one of the reasons we'll see RTSs on the console is because people can't pirate it. That's why we're going to see a lot more of everything on the console. When you look at the sales of really hardcore games like Crysis and you think, "Wow, those games should have sold a lot more," you realize that's probably due in large part to piracy. And you realize that a game like Crysis would have done its true numbers if it had launched on console first."

Hermits please do not attempt to spin this into "buh ma fren g0t 360 torrentz lol". Console game piracy is nowhere near as bad as PC game piracy in numbers and impact.

So now two PC gaming stalwarts have released statements like this EPIC and GAS POWERED GAMES.

Is it starting to sink in yet hermits? You can't keep eating free or there won't be any food to go around.

Do you know how easy it is to Mod a X360 or Wii?

Or Maybe you suddenly forgot about the Nintendo losing a billion dollars due to piracy?

Fast fact, do some googling before you pin point PC gaming as the only guilty culprit of piracy.

[EDIT] I've lost all respect for CliffyB, he might as well go sell himself to Microsoft before PC gamer start saying "Who's that guy? Someone else Microsoft paid off to promote their system?". Besides Crysis selling a million copies in three months, isn't too shabby if you ask me. :|

And yet pcgaming is growing at fast rate. Obvious piracy is a problem and it will continue to be and every developer would like his games to sell better. Altough RTS comment is funny, because despite there being "no piracy on consoles' those console RTSes still sell at most 1/4 of what they do on PC. In reality the real reason for devs to go multiplat isn't piracy ,but growing dev costs. PC market is growing nicely, but not fast enough to support lots of +$10mln budgeted games.

if you take a look at this year devs you have Epic and GPG lamenting state of pcgaming and Stardock and Paradox praising it.
Compare those devs and you will see the diffrence. Epic and GPG are big developers (employing well over 100 persons each), making big budgeted games. Stardock and Paradox are small devs/publishers making hardcore pcgames with moderate budgets.
PCgaming is quickly becoming to small to handle exclusives from huge devs, so they are in for hard times. At the same time console market is already too big for companies like Stardock and Paradox to survive in and with the changes that are happening right now on PC both Stardock and Paradox are doing better than ever before.

Altough even GPG wants a part of indie pie it seems. While they are continuing big buck and mulitplat development with Supcom and Space Siege they also created a spin-off division in their company for Demigod, it's designed with small team and GPG will be self-funding and self-publishing it, mirroring Paradox/Stardock aproach

Hell, if the PC market diminishes hermit'll find happy homes on consoles, unless they just want their MMOs, those have no reason to shift markets.

Not really, most hardcore PCgamers wouldn't find happy home on consoles. If pcgaming would die, they would just stop playing games alltogether (well aside from playing some old pcgames and mods of course)

Then what's the point? Why game on an inferior machine except for it's exclusives? Any multiplat game would obviously be better on PC still, just because it has better graphics. Even if everything else is the same, we always have the better graphics. ;)

And then consolites would then get a mouse and keyboard, and become everything they mock. "Hunching over a desk with a mouse and keyboard." And then they would exclaim that FPS's are just as good on consoles because they now have a mouse and keyboard. Then the hermits would gloat and rave, "I told you so."

And the hermits would still win most of the arguments.

An article criticle of the PC on an Xbox360 page? Nah, you don't say.

Anywho, the devs are catching on and dishing out more high quality freeware games:

Lol can't pirate on a console? Its easy, but it excludes you from playing online most of the time, which is bad. Piracy isn't that bad and pc gaming will continue to live.

Oh also, what the hell is Chris Taylor smoking - Crysis sold 1 million in two months, even with huge system requirements.

million in two months just like another former 360 exclusive Mass Effect - both deemed sucessful.

How is that bad at all?

Imagine how many copies it would have sold if people couldn't get it for free......... Oooppss! Sry for using logic, I know it's not looked upon as a good thing in SW.

So you're saying that you'd be happy if you produced something and a million people bought it.... so you made a bunch of dough..... and it wouldn't bother you that maybe a million people stole it from you???? Man I wish EB Games was a kind as you.....

EB Games Employee: "Sir.... SIR! You have to pay for that....."

Me: "Nah.... nah.... that guy over there is buying a copy, so it's all good dude"

EB Games Employee: "Oh yeah... I didn't see him... sry about that sir..... have fun with the free game"

Is this how your world works?

Fact is Piracy is much more rampant on the PC..... Yes people can mod their consoles.... but a very small % of people actually do that..... since you can't go online with them if they are modded. Well this is true with the XBOX at least, and I'm sure it applies to Wii & PS3 too.

.... PC Gamers tend to be the more dedicated/hardcore gamers.... and therefore have the know-how of how to get their games for free..... While many hardcore gamers play consoles.... there is much higher % of casuals on consoles that don't know how to pirate games or don't even know that its possible.

So anyway you wanna try and spin it.... PC is affected the most by piracy.

If consoles were hurting because of Piracy, why have the profits/sales been going through the roof over the past few years??? Time to move your bum ***** out of your parents basements hermits, get a job and support your hobby.... b4 your hobby abandons you.

Veterngamer

Not true at all, I myself don't believe in my pirating games, I buy all of them since I want to support the developers, having said that, I know a whole host of individuals which have modded X360 and are still able to go on Xbox Live with their pirated games. Again don't ask me about the specifics, I've only seen it with my eyes and haven't bothered asking because I don't believe in it.

As far as I know, the PS3 is the only unmoddable system out right now.

Now you are not even looking at the point I made.

I simply stated the fact - which is Crysis sold as much as Mass Effect in the same time period, and has hefty system requirements - it was expected to sell later - after the standard visual performance reached its lofty heights.

Of course piracy takes sales, from ANY game, be it console or PC, of course develepers and publishers hate it, that doesent mean games cant be a commercial sucess.

Piracy is bigger on PC, but how do you think console developers feel when their games are being sold OVER and OVER again, without a single cent going towards them. 1 billion $ speaks aswell doesent it?
As I said before, piracy does effect PC gaming - though Digital Distribution and subscriptions do counter act it - to a degree, wheras for console games there is piracy - not as big as PC piracy, however there is pre-owned games which is absolutely massive aswell....

Man what's with all these attacks on PC gaming recently?

Heck why do you guys even delight on every bad news that comes the PC's way?

Can't you guys just go back to attacking one of the 3 consoles that you don't support, simply because you don't own one?

Honestly guys, the PC is happily sitting on the sidelines content with giving us some of the most graphically advanced games, which eventually helps in the advance of gaming on every other system.

As for piracy, well you can't spin the fact that it affects all systems. It's just been worse on the PC simply bacause it been around the longest.

As for console piracy, all I can say is that it's indeed quite easy the have your 360 and Wii modded. I can even easily buy pirated copies of games for both consoles on the street much less download games for it. Of course that is if I own one of any of them, which I do not.

Not nearly as easy as clicking a mouse button on a download link.

Or we could trust Stardock, who knows what they're talking about, and has sold thousands of copies of Sins of a Solar Empire, a game with no copy protection.

Do you know why Crysis really doesn't sell? High system requirements. There is a directly inverse relationship between system requirements and sales on PC - see the Sims, WoW, Starcraft, et cetera for evidence. It has nothing to do with piracy.

If PC gaming dies, all of gaming as we know it will die with it.

Start waving good-bye now if this is really want you want TC, your PC hatred is unwarranted, you owe your past, present, and future to PC game designers.

Ermm..if Sins would sell "thousands" it would make Stardock almost bancrupt. It's selling better than that, the same with GC2. And Crysis already sold over 1mln copies, so apparently there's a market for highend pcgames

It's not that easy. Alot of these sites are set up in countries were piracy isn't illegal. It's just file sharing. Hell there are some sites that are set up right in Canada..

Not just sales wise. Completely. SupCom on 360 looks like SupCom in PC on low quality. Also let's not forget on the devs are pretty much eliminating most of the gameplay elements that make SC what it is.

Also, how is PC gaming dying when Crysis, a game with probably the highest system requirements so far, sells more than 1 million in three months? How is the industry dying when nVidia made about 60 million in the past year? How is it dying when both STALKER and Witcher sell more than 1 million each?

PC gaming is NOT dying. I don't care what he says. You go to any warez or torrent site and you can find thousands of console/handheld games as well as PC ones.

fact is console gaming piracy is going to get bigger. the bigger the market the more pirates or freeloader there are.

i'll bet you that spore, starcraft 2 and new world in warcraft expansion will sell like hot cakes. then again they do have some good anti piracy measures. both starcraft 2 and wow are multiplayer. well starcraft 2 has singleplayer but the big thing about it is taking it online. spore appeals to the casual market and since one of the best features is downloading other peoples creations on to your game, well a pirated game won't be able to do this.

piracy is bad. and as much as we keep having to hear this "piracyt hurts the industry" hopefully certain freeloaders out there might consider its worth buying the games they play.

as for crysis, considering the amout of people downloading it, it could have sold more than a million in that time frame. and really it deserved to. so none of this its a high spec game and thats why it didn't sell lots and lots. look at the torrents, and see how many people are downloading it.

ever wanted to know the definition of irony.

well once upon a time on a forum, 2 release (hacker) groups were having a go at each other. one group accused the other of stealing their crack for a game and releasing it as their own..........that was funny. i laughed so hard......

Oh also, what the hell is Chris Taylor smoking - Crysis sold 1 million in two months, even with huge system requirements.

million in two months just like another former 360 exclusive Mass Effect - both deemed sucessful.

How is that bad at all?

skrat_01

Come off it already. Crysis didn't sell 1 million copies to people. It sold 1 million copies to video card makers to pack in with their cards.

Piracy, haha piracy was installed by the companies! this means more hardware sales! the ones loosing are the developers, the main guns (xbox, wii) sales more systems because of this, heck, its the same with the music industry, you can buy the original or buy a piracy version for 5 dls, the artist dont get their loyalties, but the big guns get money from this sales.

Companies did cactually make piracy a profit for them and in this way they dont pay royalties LOL.

Do you know how easy it is to Mod a X360 or Wii?

-Renegade

Not nearly as easy as clicking a mouse button on a download link.

On the other hand Crysis sold over a million. Plus they got $ from Nvidia and Intel so I'm sure they made a good profit.

If piracy is such a big deal then why dont the publishers stop it? Its so easy to find these sites that are breaking the law. Why do they continue to allow it?

easy. Alot of these sites are set up in countries were piracy isn't illegal. It's just file sharing. Hell there are some sites that are set up right in Canada..

Its been going on for so long now you'd think something would have been done by now. This also affects film and music.

I've seen tennage girls get busted for downloading songs but never see people getting busted for downloading games.

Two people whose games have sold horribly because they've made horrible games. The fact of the matter is that the PC accounts for more than 30% of game sales, and over 21% of the entire gaming industry. Chew on those numbers.

[QUOTE="Ultimas_Blade"]Hell, if the PC market diminishes hermit'll find happy homes on consoles, unless they just want their MMOs, those have no reason to shift markets.AdrianWerner

Not really, most hardcore PCgamers wouldn't find happy home on consoles. If pcgaming would die, they would just stop playing games alltogether (well aside from playing some old pcgames and mods of course)

ve got a few consoles and am very happy with them but i think my heart stays truly with PC gaming thats what got me into FPS games and so on
