This is not necessarily news. What it is, however, is a place for you to discuss the epic failure contained in the following news tidbits. They indicate the general move in the industry towards homogenized junk that appeals to mindless Monster-drinking teens/fratboys.

In the latest game informer we are informed that Bioshock 2 developer 2K Marin has unfortunately been given an opportunity to violate the X-Com franchise's memory by mutating it into a first-person shooter. Is this X-Com? No, but it is a cute attempt to dupe oldschool fans.

There is a very large preview feature of Fallout New Vegas in the same issue. I was excited to dig in. On page 66, or page 5 of the preview, they reveal that the game will have ironsights as opposed to the zoom mechanic of Fallout 3. Great, I thought, I hate z.....wait, WHAT? Okay, so Fallout New Vegas will feature the real-time gameplay of Fallout 3 and it will take place in the first person perspective. In other words you can play the game like a first person shooter.

The best and most loved turn-based RPGs of gaming history have been turned into first-person shooters. Discuss.

Neither Xcom or Fallout has been corrupted by casuals. It's the developers themselves that has become corrupted by greed.

New Vegas, an open world FPS, with decent shooting mechanics for a change? Awesome! Sign me up. And don't try to act like Fallout 3 was a classic, made for the true RPG gamers. It didn't really compare to the old series, it was already casualised.

Please point me to the part of my post where I said otherwise. Sex has increased in public acceptance and media since like early 1960's, one would be naive to suggest otherwise.

X-Com hasn't been X-Com since Interceptor. Some may argue Apocalypse is the first step in the downward slide of the franchise.

Since Fallout 3 was so good, I'm willing to see how iron sights works out.

Fallout 3's real time shooting was horrible. I'd rather them make it half decent if it's gonna go this route.

I wont. IMO, Fallout 3 was a complete, soulless crap, even with all the mods and it's definitely not a classic.

Well since you said that right now in 2010 the only thing the entire siciety cares about it is sex and violence I think you pretty much implied that there was a time when this wasn't the case.

Um... you're like 5 years late to the party. But anyways, as un-falluot-ish as Fallout 3 was, it was still good. And New Vegas, from what I've read, will be much better than 3. Like, MUCH better. And I don't see what the big deal is with iron sight. It makes it much more realistic that way. I think all us fallout fans know that the franchise has changed, but what we have now is much better than having NOTHING at all.

Now you can whine all about as much you want.

I don't think they're corrupted by "casuals", I think developers and publishers are starting to realize that they have a potentially larger audience by making their titles more accessible. Fallout 3 and TESIV: Oblivion are pretty damn good examples of games that while taking a hit in some RPG mechanics, end up being very "playable".

I think gamers need to understand that for some of these franchises to make these come backs it is necessary for them to undergo some modifications to bring them into the now. In Fallout's case I'm just glad they gave the series a reboot at all.

Very well said. Change can be good sometimes. Your favorite franchise may not be the same as you remember it, but it could still be very good.

I would put more of my blame on the console makers. It's their fault that game makers nowadays have to spend tens of millions of dollars for a single AAA game, and it's too much of a risk to not go with what works. Hell, even Sony can't get out of the red, and they've got quite a few of their own million + sellers under their belt this gen.

It's because of this that the game developers have to develop their games in such a way.

I expect that next gen will focus entirely on software, and not on hardware. Consoles won't come packed with the most powerful processors, or video cards, but instead their key selling points will be the software that comes with it kinda like Xbox Live, PS Home, the Game Room, etc. If not I expect a video game crash. Completely sincere with that statement.

This is pretty much the best example, yet I prefer Super Mario 2 USA to the lost levels.

Super Mario Bros 2 would have been better if it was a spin-off, instead of being in the main series.

It originally wasn't even a Mario game. The game we got was a title called Doki Doki Panic, except with all the sprites replaced with Mario related ones.

Yeah, I know, but considering they sold it as a Mario game it should have been an spin-off.

Mafia wasn't that complex of a game to be honest. Mafia 2 looks even better than it's predecessor, only thing they can dumb down is make the driving more arcade.

I know most ppl don't care but you have to understand that most critics if not all.. consider it the greatest pc game of all time... The recent news and rage about it going FPS is justified.. just imagine if civilization 5 was announced that it would be a fps with no similarities to previous civ games..

It wasn't the complexity, it was the sophistication of the original that I fear will be compromised in the sequel. From all the footage that's been shown, I can't shake the feeling that it may end up becoming a derivative, gangster shoot em' up. The original game was fantastic because it actually felt like a compelling crime drama. Mafia 2 doesn't seem to capture that magic from what's been shown.

No franchise has been corrupted by casuals, franchises have only been streamlined by design choices their developers thought were better than previous ones.

Discuss.

You were able to play fallout 3 like a first person shooter, but I feel that Obsidian will make a much better fallout game then Beth.

Ok. Stop playing the games. It's obvious a lot of people don't care about any of the new aspects/methods old franchises have taken. Go back and play the old ones if you like it that much.

I thought Fallout 3 was a decent addition to the series, and I loved fallout 1 & 2.
