No, not the best online game in years. It is very good, and I really enjoy it, but not the best in years.
Alot better online games, Diablo 2 for instance. Please, don't deny it.
But COD4 still had a great online mode.

It's all a matter of opinion. But I guess what I was getting at was the structure. How so many FPS, RTS, and RPG follow the same mold so closely and COD4 turns it upside down by making a FPSRPG. You have to admit that is what COD4 is with the levels and prestige.

No, its the most linear and repetitive, whateevr map knowledge that is required was removed with the new spawn system.
Most generic style of online FPS imo ... Class based games are so much more fun...
Battlefield 1942/2/2142 , Team Fortress 2 is the nicest suprize to me ... it doesnt follow the generic headshot forumlae of the CoD/MoH esque.
I play CoD4 max for about an hour and get bored out of my mind.

I think Call of Duty 4 is a fantastic game overall, but it certainly isn't the greatest online game in years. Not really up there either, in my opinion. Great online mode, but I don't think it ranks up there with some of the best online games. I'm comparing all genres, not FPS, by the way.

No, but they pretty much perfected it. Even JeffG agrees.

Diablo 2 was AWESOME online, especially for a game released in 2000. I loved my Smiter/Zealot paladin, I won alot in duels with it :)

jeff agrees? i must change my stance instantly now for i cannot have a differing opinion to jeff.
In terms of FPS online gaming, I still prefer Halo 3. :P Sure CoD4 is alot more customizable and you grow levels and get xp and all that stuff, but when it comes down to being inside of an actual game, I just find Halo 3 to be a whole lot funner because in CoD4 you die from too few bullets, in Halo 3 you've got a bit more meat on your bones so you don't have to worry as much about if someone else sees you first because you've got a lot more options, in CoD4 it seems like if someone sees you before you see them, then you're dead. I like Halo 3's run-and-gun gameplay vs CoD4's "sneaking" gameplay.

There is something to be said for that. I'd rather play than sit waiting for the match to end.
COD4 is a rather shallow game....beyond the upgrade features (which the game was deffinetly not the first to do), the gameplay is generic...and it doesnt even touch the depth of TF2, BF2 or enemy territory.cobrax25
Agreed, those 3 games I can still play now, and will for quite some time...
my favourite moment in COD4 was when the campaign was such a letdown i cried. multiplayer is fun and well put together but personally i think there are better games.6matt6
I'm playing the campaign right now on the 360 and it's really good and challenging. This might be the next game I will actually complete in a while. I will probably play the multiplayer on the PC but kinda getting tired of it. I also surprised at how good the game looks on the HDTV. Really impressed...
cod 4 is all right but defiantly not the best online game. It dosnt have vehicles, large maps to support vehicles, levels all really look the same and seems depressing exept overgrown, frag fest sometimes, camping is ridiculous sometimes, no one talks online. Hopefully call of duty 6 will fix thishornymushroom
i love how everyone completely ignores cod5.
(im not being sarcastic either)

Call of Duty 5 is supposed to take place in WWII again, and is being developed supposedly by Treyarch.....again.....
They're expecting a whole different experience.
