Now I know these two games are completely different, but in this other forum this one guy goes on his rants claiming Mario Galaxy is the best game this generation. I disagree, because if it was wouldn't it have won the game of the year award? He also claims that storylines in games aren't important, but doesn't that help us as gamers to want to continue playing?

I want opinions from users.

1.I want to know what game you would prefer and why.

2. I also want to know does having a storyline, an interesting one, make you want to continue on playing just to find out what happens next.

Thank you to all who reply to this.

An endlessly rehashed franchise that provides only an afternoon of fun? (COD4)

Or a game in a series renowned for its innovation and originality, which can last years? (SMG)

Easy choice. (BTW, I don't play multiplayer.)

Some parts of SMG are pure platforming nirvana. The other parts are just platforming heaven.

I guess it really depends on your preference whether it be primarily for single-player or multi-player. I'm not big on multi-player so when comparing the single-player games SMG wins hands-down. CoD4 was a very polished and enjoyable single-player experience however it simply cannot compare to the brilliance that was SMG. If multi-player is your thing then CoD4 is still an excellent choice

COD4 would be for multiplayer action, since that's it's greatest strenght.

But if you want to play alone, get Mario Galaxy.

I own both, I think Mario Galaxy is in a different league altogether.

CoD4 is a great game, it provides a solid single player mode with a polished multi-player experience. However, it's hard to shake of the feeling that it's just the latest FPS, one that will be rivalled and surpassed soon. It's not original and it's not ambitious, Galaxy however, is a game with a stroke of masterclass, a stroke of magic. The level design, music, nostalgia and originality combined make it an experience which can't be missed.

Sometimes, a good story gives me more incentive to play through a game. But really, it doesn't affect my shopping habits (game wise) and I don't care much for them if the gameplay's good.

But really, SMG is great. Game of the Generation, I don't know, but easily one of the best games to come out in a while.

Compare SMG to Half Life 2 and then let's see who takes home the prize. Back on topic, I would say Super Mario Galaxy, simply because this is a game that's built to stand the test of time, while Call of Duty 4 is just an excellent game.

1. If you're a fan of Mario, you need to play Galaxy. Platforming at its finest. Call of Duty 4 is awesome too, but not as exciting as Galaxy. You kind of know what you're going to get with CoD4. The same can't be said about Galaxy. CoD4 will probably last you longer, if you're playing multi-player, though.

2. A good story would help to keep me interested in the game, but a good story isn't needed for all games. Galaxy is an example of this. Actually, I don't think I want a "good" story in a Mario game.. I usually only care about how fun I think the game is to play. I'd much rather play Bomberman than a boring RPG with a good story.

Thats a tough one I've yet to play mario galaxy but it looks cool. I have COD4 and it was my first online experiance it's a blast. The single player was short but had a awsome story. I would say if I had to choose I pick COD4 not for the game itself but for the console with the possibility to play other games like GTA4 and Star Wars force unleashed.

Haven't got a Wii, but I'm currently on 7 days for cod4 mp and thats on top of my two play throughs (on regular and on veteran) of the campaign. Thats probably just under 200 hours, and the maps are out this week. Mario is like what 10 hours? So if this was a "what should I buy thread"...well games aren't cheap, value matters. So I'd definately say cod. As for best game, not played smg so can't tell.

Well I did enjoy Mario but what is there to do once you collect all the stars?

Call of Duty does have a short campaign, but the online gives it replay value along with the new maps coming soon.

Besides it won 40+ awards..

Between 40-80 depending on how good you are at platformers... add if you do the second unlocked play threw with the other brother... (Think of it has hard mode)

For what you get for your money, galaxy is a phenomenal package and no amount of multiplayer online nonsense would have made the game any better.

It did win GOTY at the AIAS awards, but IMO those are bogus. The GDC Awards are the ones that mean anything.

Easy choice. (BTW, I don't play multiplayer.)

mjarantilla

Then you didn't play the game 100%.

And lo and behold, I don't care. Online multiplayer sucks. Much rather have same-screen multiplayer.

Still, before he shortened and edited your post, you said SMG can be enjoyed for years, COD 4 afternoon fun, I think it's the other way around.

SMG's fun is nonlinear, open-ended, and each level can be enjoyed again and again, either for the sake of completion or personal contests. COD4's fun lasts 5-6 hours, and once it's done, there's no reason at all to go back to it.

"Years" is not a stretch for SMG. People still play SM64 for the same reason. But this time next year, COD4 will be forgotten and replaced by the next big shooter.

Like said before, both are two different games and its hard to compare. MSG doesn't have the online like COD but the storyline and depth of the game beats COD with all the side quests and other missions. The graphics are great too considering its a Wii game. COD's single player takes about 8 hours to beat. But it does have online and the graphics are some of the best of any 360 games. I depends what your into, but i would take SMG.

thats probably true actually. When's cod5 out? end of this year/beginning of next? and then 6 will follow when infinity ward are ready.

Mario Galaxy. Although COD4 was a great game, the only gripping part of the game for me was the chapter that took place in the past. The gameplay was superb, but SMG's platforming aspects are second to none.

Yep. Exactly.

People will still remember Galaxy as being that great platformer.
But CoD4 will just be forgotten as more shooters come out and leave the game back out in the dust.

CoD4 is still more than an afternoon of fun.

Errr, that's being generous :P luigi playthrough doesn't take as long because you've already gotten all the stars before, so your not going to be spending a lot of time failing. (like luigi's purple coins took like 1 hour the first time, but only like 5 mins the second).

depends on your tastes.

to me, mario galaxy was little different than sm64, and the 3d gimmick got old after like 3 planets, and the story was the exact same

but call of duty 4 was like awesome, the campaign was short but awesome, and the multiplayer is the best shooter out there right now definately and it has unlimited replay value.
