http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/34544/Source_Layoffs_At_Crytek_Budapest_Kinect_Game_Moves_Foward.php

Source: Layoffs At Crytek Budapest, Kinect Game Moves Foward

"An anonymous source told Gamasutra this week that Crysis developer Crytek will lay off 30-35 workers at its Budapest studio, which will purportedly switch from work on an Xbox 360-exclusive Kinect game to focus on tablet titles.

Avni Yerli, managing director for the Frankfurt, Germany-headquartered developer, responded to the source's claims, stating in an email, "We can confirm that our Budapest studio is getting a new direction and focus." He did not confirm specific details of those changes.

The source claimed that in the "next few weeks," the Budapest studio, which has been working on the first-person melee Kinect game Codename: Kingdoms, will shrink from 80 workers to 30-35.

The headcount reduction purportedly comes after Codename: Kingdoms publisher Microsoft Game Studios made a "sudden decision" to have Crytek move the development of the game from Budapest to Crytek's Frankfurt studio.

The source also said nine workers have already been laid off following the project's move to Frankfurt. Crytek is reportedly keeping more workers on board for the time being as the developer prepares to present Codename: Kingdoms at Microsoft's E3 press conference early next month.

The Budapest studio had been working on the game for two years, the source said. The title debuted briefly at Microsoft's E3 conference last year via a live-action trailer, originally with no confirmation of Kinect support.

Laid-off workers reportedly include people from an array of disciplines, including level design, quality assurance, IT, art and audio.

The source also said Crytek will "move their tablet development [to Budapest]," but did not confirm details of any projects in the works."

So the studio had to lay off over half the staff, the rest of whom will work on the first person kinect game kingdoms...

Oblivion melee was excellent in first person, although it lacked variety of moves. If Codename kingdom allows FP melee with a gamepad and variety, damn its one game I may buy.

Maybe it will support both. A first person melee game seems kind of cool. If its only for Kinect than

Sucks about the layoffs. :( Not everyone can appreciate how difficult it is to make it into the game industry.

If ture, then i can see a lot of hate for MS in this forums, few Lemms will support this decition even if the game turns decent, which i doubt since there isn't any decent game for Kinect anyway.

Wow, this just destroyed my hopes for a good fantasy actiongame. It could have had epic battles and castle seiges. Now it's dumb, you ruined it MS. Why are all games getting ruined just so that MS can get money. YOU ALREADY HAVE ENOUGH FROM XBOX LIVE YOU BEEEEEEPPPP!!!!!

Anyway, when did crytech actually announce that the game was for kinect?

Triple bad news in that one article.

1.) Kinect game.

2.) layoffs, bad news for everybody.

3.) MS having them move studios, MS should just stay away from the people they work with, lately the've been screwing up every decision they make. Let Crytek make a good game and throw money at them every now and again.

and this is probably less of a rumor than it is the truth because it's coming from gamasutra.

Sounds awesome to me if true. Don't understand the whole need to LOL. Red Steel 2 could have been a great game if it had a better story, so imo Kingdoms could be the first truly amazing Kinect game. If you think motion controls are so stupid, you really owe it to yourself to try playing Killzone 3 with the Sharpshooter... best gameplay experience I've had this generation. (Not to mention I play far better with the Sharpshooter.)

They refer to kingdoms as a "kinect game" many times over the course of the article, the only time they even say Kinect support is when they are saying that at E3 nobody knew the game would be kinect compatiable. It could very well be Kinect only.

Yes because those games allow you to move around. How do you do that with kinect? Hop? March in place? And swinging a sword without anything actually in your hand will just feel dumb.

Im finished with Microsoft now. All that they care about is Kinect. I used to be such a huge fan and was looking forward to seeing what Codename: Kingdoms would bring to the table but now its going to be Kinect crap and most likely on rails. Im finished with the Xbox because I don't want Kinect and I am not getting what I payed for good XBOX games.

Wow. Nobody cares about the success of kinect. We're mad that a potentially good game is going to be dumbed down (ie: can't move) because ms wants mo money.

Really? Then really you have reading comprehensive problem. The article CLEARLY STATED IT MIGHT BEa Kinect "COMPATIBLE" game and this is just a RUMOR. But haters just wanted to try their best to twist the whole article (still rumor) into a Kinect bloodshed. It is so ironic.

Looks like console focus and selling out PC went well for Crytek.

Laying off the people from their second biggest studio and making the rest work on mobile games.

Now their main project will be Kingdoms, a kinect 360 exclusive. And Microsoft is funding this, so I guess they should be thankful they are still in business.

Such failure from once big and important developer.

The only thing that's happening with the development of Codename Kingdoms is the developer is being shifted from Crytek Budapest to Crytek Frankfort. Crytek Frankfort is the main Crytek studio.

Yes of course. "Around 50 staff face redundancy at Crytek Budapest - the studio making Xbox 360-exclusive fantasy title Kingdoms - in the next few weeks, according to an inside source. The move apparently comes after Microsoft Game Studios asked Crytek to shift development of the game from Hungary to its Frankfurt office in Germany."

The source claimed that in the "next few weeks," the Budapest studio, which has been working on the first-person melee Kinect gameCodename: Kingdoms, will shrink from 80 workers to 30-35.

The anonymous source was confrimed to be very valid.

Kinect supported. We'll get to see video of it at E3 next month.

No...Laying off 2/3 of your staff doesn't happen all the time. Making the studio tablet focused is as good as shutting it down.

And since Frankfurt is their main studio, they aren't working on anything else than a kinect game. Crytek failed.

Have there been any hybrid Kinect games yet, using both input devices?

Using the controller for movement and other basic functions and then releasing it to throw a spell or draw a bow or whatever would make for a really intense experience. If this is a purely Kinect game it will be a huge disappointment, however; Crytek makes outstanding environments but their prowess would be wasted on the inevitably on-rails experience Kinect's movement limitations require.

The game is probably moving to Frankfort for final quality testing. The game will be presented next month at E3 in a near final state.

Even more speculations.. They are closing down this team and moving production to their other studio. "The Game is finished" isn't really the logical conclusion here. They will finish it in Frankfurt.
