Honestly, I think it should be called Xbox 3 because it's simply the third Xbox console. Just like PS1, PS2 and PS3, Xbox consoles should be called Xbox, Xbox 2 and Xbox 3.
Xbox 360 sounds stupid. It should have been Xbox 2.

Sorry, but just usling a sequential number (as in naming by the next in in line) is just lame. It shows a lack of any creativity or imagintion, and basically that no effort was put in coming up with the name. And while "360" is a number, it isn't going by a sequence (from 1, to 2, to 3, etc...), it's centered around a theme of a full circle of entertainment (games, movies, music, etc...).
I don't say that it's the best name ever made but at least some genuine thought was put into it. How long did the Sony execs sit round the board room table to come up with the name of the Playstation's successor? 3 min? "Ok guys, we got a new system to succeed our very successful Playstation, what should we call?" "well it is the second product, sooooo how about PS2?" "Cool, let's call it a day". And then just following the same formula on the 3rd entry. I'm NOT knocking against the system itself, but there is simply NO originality in the naming.
Sega actually had the most creative naming in their product lines, showing actual originality with each new generation they went into. From Master System, to Genesis (mega drive in europe), to Saturn, to Dreamcast. Each system felt as unique as their names.
Incidently, it was market research that lead Microsoft to believe that going with Xbox 2 would give a bad impression being compared to Playstation 3. That the numbers denote that it was "behind" Sony when in fact they were each the newest release of their time.
