CONFIRMED: Nintendo will launch a new Miyamoto franchise next year

Mario, Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto says mystery project has been "keeping me pretty busy."

Famed game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario and Zelda, has teased a "new franchise" for 2014.

"We'll have Mario Kart 8 out next spring, and at that point we'll have the whole lineup in place, so I think it's about time we brought out a new franchise," Miyamoto said in the latest issue of Famitsu (as translated by Polygon). "I can't give out details, but that's the title that's been keeping me pretty busy lately."

A new and original game from Miyamoto was first revealed in January 2012, when the Associated Press reported that the designer was at work on an "undisclosed original title."

Miyamoto's most recently released title was March's Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon for the 3DS. He is currently working on Wii U game Pikmin 3, due to launch August 4.

The designer turns 61 this year, and said in March that it would be "strange" not to be thinking about retirement, though he has no immediate plans to step down from his post.Gamespot

The last new IP Miyamoto was invvolved in was Wii, although his last original IP that he spearheaded was Pikmin, back in 2001.

Anyway, what with The Wonderful 101 this year, and Project X and Miyamoto's new game next year, looks like all the complains of Nintendo not having new franchises will soon be gone. Plus those that continue to criticize Nintendo for not having any new IPs developed in house from their EAD or SPD studios should be pretty satisfied with this as well, I think.

Anyway, what do you think it will be? Another platformer? An RPG? Shooter? Racer? Something completely out of the left field, like Pikmin?

Didn't he say say a while ago he wanted to make a first person shooter; But he was involved in Geist.

Also a couple of years ago he said he likes Swimming and that was a hint to what he was going to work on and some thought it was going to be a game that was underwater.

I still hope to see what he is working on.

I don't even know why people were hyping it High Voltage (Even if it is an awesome name) could never made a good game if their lives depended on it.

I think the only game they made that was remotely good was a console port of "Call of Duty: Big Red One".

I think the only Nintendo new IPs that didn't get overlooked were Xenoblade Chronicles, Last Story, and Pandora's Tower.

Pushmo should also not be overlooked.

So now everyone got what they wanted from Nintendo. People wanted to see sequels to DK, Zelda, Mario, Mario Kart, ...

and people wanted to see a new IP. I hope it's going to be as awesome as their old franchises. GC had the last worthwhile 'new IP' because all Wii gave us was Wii Fit, Wii Sports, Wii Music as new IP :|

I didn't list other IPs because some say the other IPs Nintendo had this gen don't count because Nintendo didn't develop them but they own the IP.

Also Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Wii Party, and Wii Music are all part of the same IP.

Hope it goes well for him, Might be his last so would love to see it become a huge hit. Worst I can imagine is that it would bomb :(

Nintendo has needed a shooter to add to their collection for awhile now. I must say I'm excited, although I wish this had come earlier before the flood of FPS games from this last gen as I find I'm growing bored and jaded with FPS games in general anymore.

It was an interesting take on the FPS genre; The only problem was the GCN controller wasn't great for FPS and the engine they used caused the game to have some frame-rate problems.

Next year is sounding good for scooping up a WiiU.  It makes me happy to see Nintendo putting petal to the metal.  They know how to weave magic when the time comes.
