I've got my fair share of games for my PS3 and even more on Steam for my PC, but I find this to be quite humorous. PC gamers complain about the consolization of PC games (which to some extent I agree with), but ignore the fact that console games are now being PCized. EA set the trend, and now Sony and Ubisoft are following suit. The "Online Pass" system used by these publishers is very similar to a little something PC games have: serials.

It seems like publishers are working hard to make sure us gamers get the worst of both worlds, no matter which side you take.

Thats a bad thing. I have consoles for simplistic, rapid, splitscreen fun with my friends.

My pc for everything else. Me don't wants!

We've been dealing with stuff like this for years enjoy being taken out of SP when you disconnect.

WE want multiplat games that take advantage of our hardware.

Consoles have like a 5 year lag on service-base things compared to PCs.

That's funny because that online pass thing exists because of used games, a problem only found on consoles.

Not really a direct result of pc games though. Thats because of used game vendors/pirating. Plus entering anything in on a console sucks unless you have the mini pad thing or a keyboard plugged in.

The pass doesn't bother me. I'd say console games were being pcized if we saw a massive increase in mmos...specifically with elf girls. :D

The only reason there isn't a large used sales market for PC games is that serials, which were meant to combat piracy, ended up taking out the used market too.

While we do have our share of crappy ports, there are a few multiplats that do, Battlefield 3 and Just Cause 2 are two I can think of off the top of my head, but there are a few others too. However, keep another thing in mind. The higher end the graphics, the less people there will be who can play the game. One of the reasons why Black Ops doesn't look as good as BFBC2 on the PC is that Activision didn't want to alienate the gamers with weaker PCs. Valve's games are pretty hardware friendly too, yet they don't get too much complaint from PC gamers.

No CoD game could ever look as good as BC2 due to that old crappy engine the game is running on.

Still why can't people with higher end hardware be givin the option for better graphics and etc. Valve is an exception since you can pretty much mod the games to your liking and contain a huge modding community who probably have done it before the games come out.

i wouldn't call it crappy... if it has decent graphics running at 60 fps.it was glorious back in the day. but seriously, bf3 is using a brand new engine, that really a fair comparison?

What engine is Portal 2 running on? Oh, that's right Source, which is even older than the engine CoD is running on, yet nobody complains about that. BC2 is a hard game to run, especially if you don't have a quad core. CoD on the other hand, can be run at a playable framerate by much more users, the same way Valve's games can. How many people could run GTA4 or Crysis when they were first released? Playing a game with decent graphics is better than playing no game at all.

I'm no game dev, but my assumption is that it's probably difficult to create a game with a large graphical range. Crysis 2 recently had the DX11 patch, which catered to the higher end PC gamers, but even then, the difference, while still noticable, wasn't that huge. Some games such as GTA4 do have mods that boost graphics, but often they are poorly optimized and can bog down even the fastest computers.

How do having serial keys/online passes affect gameplay in any way? BTW, online pass is a direct reaction to game rentals, which is almost solely, a console problem.

That's not the fault of the PC platform, it's the fault of greedy devs who don't like their games being sold second hand since they don't get the money.

Did you just imply that Source is older than id tech 3? .....

Also, try running BLOPS on any system older than 2009. A system than can run MW/MW2 easily at 60+ FPS. It runs like a smoking pile of s***.

The only real console is the Wii as it offers something that can't be had on PC.

The other copnsoles are just poor man's / wanna be PC's.

Also, Nintendo is the only real gaming company.

The "Online Pass" system used by these publishers is very similar to a little something PC games have: serials.

dk00111

Online Pass is nothing like PC serial keys.

With a traditional key all the game does is check that only one use of that key is online at any one time. You could pass the key on to a friend along with the game disc and he could play online with it without any problems. Online Pass does not work this way; you need to attach it to your account in order to play online, and after that it can no longer be used. The game never checks the key itself, instead checking for the Online Pass DLC or whatever. Some PC games now use Steamworks or other methods that require irrevocably attaching the key to your account in the same manner as Online Pass, but this is a recent development.

Online Pass blocks used games, but traditional PC serials do not.

It has nothing to do with PCs, developers want to get some money from the used game business. Just hope that they dont start implementing some sort of DRM in the future.

Ah, my mistake. I thought they created a new engine with the release of MW. However, my point stands. Cod is meant to be a light(er) weight game. It runs at 60fps on consoles and can be run by more computers than most other recent shooters out there. Black Ops was poorly optimized as someone pointed out, but I believe that was addressed via patches.

Online Pass is nothing like PC serial keys.

garrett_daniels

Most PC games these days require you to link that serial to an account in order to play online. Once you link that serial, the serial is useless to any second hand owners as far as online play goes, just like online passes.

That's a good thread, I've always tought that the doors swings both ways.

I only wish that on the next generation, the new xbox be possible to play closs-plataform multiplayer with PC Windows 7/8 users. I remember that NFS Underground allowed that, with the PS2 I think.

If the PC is truly about choice, then the option for split-screen should be there for those that want it. If you don't like it, you don't have to use it.

That won't end well, i'm not being a PC elitist, but in an FPS mouse and keybourd destroys gamepad. There was a test for a game (can't remember the game or find the link, but someone on this forum has the link in their sig), and console players got destroyed. However in other genres it could work.

Most PC gamers do not want split screen gaming at all. Why share a screen with someone else when you can have it all to yourself?

Because it's inconvenient having everyone bring along their computers every time you want to play some local multiplayer?

It's only inconvenient if you let it be. LAN gaming is popular and PC gamers set up their own networks to allow for it. It is even big business with large LAN parties held at hotels and other locations to allow hundreds of gamers to play "locally" with others.

I am perfectly fine with console publishers utilizing cd keys. The only problem is you likely wont see a price decrease.

That's a good thread, I've always tought that the doors swings both ways.

You are thinking of the testing that MS did and what ultimately killed when mediocre PC gamers slaughtered the best XBox players. One of the games was Shadowrun.

More can be found at Microsoft killed cross-platform project because PC gamers wrecked console gamers.

"The slaughter was so bad, Sood says that Microsoft even pitted "mediocre" PC gamers against "the best" console gamers in testing, and the results were unchanged: the keyboard and mouse prevailed. It's not clear what titles were played, but Unreal and Gears of War are mentioned."

good lord
