I have a semi-unrelated question. I'm thinking of getting Call of Pripyat, but I don't really want the other two games, just because it means I have 3 huge games to play and not enough time. So basically, what's the story like? Do I need to have played the first 2 to understand what's going on with the latest?

Well if they made a new STALKER from the ground up with consoles in mind then yes. The game of course would have to be a little more action focused and have to get rid of the inventory system for control and interface purposes.

KamikazeDonut

Why would it? Are you implying console gamers have a short attention span?

Stalker is not for everyone. I couldn't get into it. I just didn't see what was so thrilling about it. All I could think of was how far I had to walk to do anything at all. In a boring field with nothing to do. That's just me though.

Metalscarz

I couldnt get into it either. I got both the first and second games cheap on steam, and never even downloaded the second one yet.

I would get bored, then want to try again, start all over and get bored again. Never understood the love for those games around here. I don't hate it, but I didn't like it much either. I can see how some people would though I guess. Maybe I'll give it another shot. Third time a charm perhaps.

I agree, I didn't enjoy it. It was a bit too hardcore for me. I didn't get exactly what I was supposed to be doing and I just got bored after a while. I, like you, tried it a few times as well.

Games like this is what I consider strictly PC orientated.

I'd definately try it if it came over intact(obviously this is hypothetical, don't bombard me with 360s specs :P) [QUOTE="AnnoyedDragon"]

Lol what a load of arse. Epic RPGs, stealth games, sim racers, strategy games, etc, are all doing great on consoles, just like FPS and action games are doing great on PC. Generalising is silly.

If they enjoyed it I suspect it would be a minority, with the majority bashing it for being boring/overrated.

No reason to? In Call of Pripyat you can go 10+ minutes without a single fight, in fact there are enemies that would avoid fighting you because *shock* not all animals are heat seeking killing machines. There is also a damn good reason not to spray bullets at everything; or to buy the best defense right off the bat.

The majority FPS audience are the Call of Duty style player. If they picked up STALKER having no prior experience with the series, just thinking it is another FPS, they would likely complain about the lack of scripted blockbuster action around every corner.

The atmosphere of The Zone is a big part of the experience, if you just count that as a background theme and focus entirely on the shooting, you won't get the appeal of the games. There are a lot of COD players out there, you admitted to it yourself they wouldn't enjoy the game, if STALKER hit consoles can you imagine the majority reaction?

There are a lot of COD players on PC too, so much for the boycott. I can imagine the reaction: I see Metro 2033 coming to the 360 and getting a decent amount of hype, and no you don't shoot constantly. Atmosphere seems to play a big part. And similar to how you describer STALKER. I haven't played STALKER, but you act as if console gamers can't play a game which is not about constantly shooting, which is simply not true. You are generalising of every console gamer as a COD player. Even I was a COD player but it doesn't mean I wouldn't enjoy a game like STALKER. If I generalised PC gamers as Sims or Farmville players, how do you think they would react to STALKER? (as you know, PC has the largest casual market). See, it doesn't make sense to generalise.

All I'm saying is the Call of Duty, Modern Warfare, Bad Company, Resistance, Halo, Gears of War, Killzone etc. games that make up the majority of the mainstream audience will likely result in a culture shock if these people tried STALKER.

I'm not aware of any STALKER like FPS on consoles, if Metro 2033 is anything like we think it is; we will see how the console audience react to it.

Unfortunately its a trend that has been around for years now. Games or IPs made for the PC, generally are changed quite dramatically for console audiences, usually stripping away certain complexities and putting an emphasis on a specific brand of action. Now while it might not be the case in practice, many publishers (and I imagine the influence on developers) retain this logic to this day. Which is a bother, there could be an audience, it will be interesting to see how Metro goes... keeping in mind STALKER is very different - one thing we do know is that its difficulty is not scaled, it is completely unforgiving and the experience is highly dependent on the player. But hey Demon's Souls on the PS3 is great evidence that punishing games have an audience. Personally I think the biggest problem is the technical transition. For Stalker, its just not going to work in its current state.

Why would I "NEED" to play it?

Pixel-Pirate

Well, obviously I chose the wrong word in "need." I should have chose a set of words like "You've got to" to imply that I'm pleading as opposed to forcing. Look, you've got nothing to lose. Buy it when you can find it in a bargain bin. You said you hate traditional FPS, well this isn't a traditional FPS. It's slower paced and rewards patience and exploration. You don't "have" to try it. But some random guy on the internet who had an amazing experience with the game believes that even if you hate FPSs, you'll have an amazing experience too. That random guy would like you to try it. Is that so wrong?

I played Stalker.... and hated it. Sometimes I think about giving it another chance, but meh, too many good games that I know I enjoy already to play... Borderlands, L4D2, ME2, Dante's Inferno, Bioshock 2, Bayonetta, Dragon Age: Origins.... coming soon... Mario Galaxy 2, Red Dead Redemption, GoW 3, Alan Wake, Red Steel 2... and more.

no time for Stalker.

I was going to get STALKER during the holiday steam sale but my PC is not equipped to handle it. Looking back I should have just spent the $2 to hang onto it until I could meet the requirements.

No, no I did not say that the gameplay needed to be more action oriented I was saying that the controls and interface would need to be action focused by being simplified, because alot of the inventory and controls were made with PC in mind. Inventory would have to be reworked , knife and grenades would have to be to mapped individual buttons etc.

It's only $20 at best buy.

I'd rather play it on the PC. Rather than play a port at $60.

I got SoC for like 2.99 on Steam during their Christmas sale. It was pretty fun after i gott he 2009 complete mod, but it didn't live up to the hype I created for it after reading about people telling me how good it was. But to answer your question, yes because I already have it for PC :P

We'll see how Metro 2033 compares I guess. probably too off-the-mark, but comparable considering the developers.

[QUOTE="deathtarget04"]

[QUOTE="KHAndAnime"]STALKER > Any console FPSMidnightshade29

In what way? Both sales and scores favour console FPS's....

In the way it's a epic single player experience. Sure if you only want a boring 5-8 map multiplayer game "pawning nubz lawz" then stalker is not for you. This game has more depth then anything on Console that is for sure. Have you ever played Dues EX? picture that but on a free living breathing opressive world with atmopshere to compete with silent hill 2. It takes place in the nuclear fallout zone of Chernobyl powerplant. Based off actual real world places. The area is a ghost town in real life aside from maybe 300 some individuals who still live there. the radiation spread for miles and has made real people in the real world mutants of human life. Look it up!

Anyway, stalker takes place in this world and is very very very deep. There are many mutants, romaind wild beasts, dogs, horrible experiements of the nuclear blast. Caches of weapons, armors powerup artifacts ammos to be found, traded or killed for. A number of factions like Duty, Freedom, Ecologists, the military are all trying to stay in power and push their own agendas. The life in stalker is done with real dynamic ai. Their is a food chain in the zone. You will see wild dogs chasing lessor beasts and so on. in the underground below buildings and settilements and the tunnels below the powerplant you will find abnormal mutants with strange powers that will hunt you, down there your flash light is sometimes your only light and it is litterally pitch black without it.

You are thrust into this world after being found in a truck that went off the road and crashed. The truck was a dead body collector, you were alive amogst them and found by another stalker. The only thing you know is that you have Stalker tatooed on your arm and a pda that says "Kill strelok" who's that? You make your way with only a pistol and are told to help wolf's crew with the car lot bandits. Do you clear it out with the help of the crew or do you take it on yourself? Do you use stealth and strategy or do you run in guns blazzing with only a pistol? Do you stealth kill a guy and loot his corpse take a sawed off or a slienced pistol and contiune to take them out? do you rescue nimble in time and complete your task?

I could go on and on gushing about this series, but really you need to check it out. If you are a console gamer and you have a pc cable of running the first stalke (a geforce 6 series will do) then go get the game expericne the best damn fps game made since the origianl dues ex.

Amen. The Stalker series, (Apart from Clear Sky which was decent...) is without doubt one of the most mindblowing series I've played. I can't quite put my finger on it.. but it seems real. It feels alive. It's a bizarre experience. I find it upsetting when the only equivelent game console players have played is Fallout 3.. which, while a good game, doesn't hold a candle to STALKER. It's like when I first discovered the band Tool, and I kept pressuring my friend to get into them, it infuriated me. I know it's all a matter of opinion, but something this rare, should be experienced by everyone. But we're not the ones at loss. :D

No, because I really don't care a ton for FPS' and S.T.A.L.K.E.R doesn't seem to be any extra special from other FPS'.

Pixel-Pirate

that's why you should play it. its totally different than pretty much anything out there. the atmosphere is better than ANY GAME OUT THERE, it sucks you and doesnt let go. once you get hooked on stalker its like passing the event horizon in a black hole, you will never escape. Metro 2033 seems the same, but definitely wont be as punishing and seems more like a corridor shooter, however when it comes out and you play it and you say "i want something more hardcore and more" then stalker is the game for you

I was told the same about HL2 and it ended up being a fairly bland shooter as well. Add some RPG elements in S.T.A.L.K.E.R and maybe I'll care.

Half Life 2 bland? That game has more ideas then pretty much every single traditional FPS put together. Stay well clear of STALKER, it'll make your head explode with it's complexity. Ps. Super Mario Galaxy is based on 14 year old gaming mechanics...No thanks. o_O

I have Shadow of Chernobyl - one of the few recent games I have for PC; it was a gift, and I can only run it on low settings - and I can't really get into it. It's a game for the hardcore FPS market, of which I'm not really a part.

You are thinking of Call Of Duty players, to me Stalker sounds like a great game and I've always been a console gamer.
