Console/PC Gamers whats your thoughts on the Steam Box?

is it good enough to be a console next to your ps4/xbox one?

is it good enough to be a PC in your living room pc gamers?

The Steambox is nothing more than a PC packaged as a console. It even shares the disadvantage of somewhat requiring the buyer to study various graphics cards to know the best value for money option. The best example is a GTX 780 vs GTX Titan. One was $600 and the other $1000, for only a meager 10% difference in power. I'll feel like a sucker if I bought the Titan version, since for $200 extra, I could possibly explore a GTX 780 SLI setup, which is so much more powerful than a single Titan.

Bottom line, I already have a PC for that, and I like choosing my parts based on my OEM preference. There's really no need for me to spend money to get a duplicate of my PC for my living room. I'll instead use that money to get the PS4 AND X1, and have the opportunity to play any game on any platform

The model is a good idea. Getting the modding community, developers, and mainstream consumers is going to be tough without exclusive offerings.

Its entry may be rocky but its potential could be realized 5yrs down the line. Overall i think its a potential disrupter for the console market especially

It seems like it could be an upgrade for console gamers, but it's hard to say until somebody gets their hands on that controller.

For me personally, it has no use. I already have a decent desktop computer which is dual screening with the lounge room TV. So if I really wanted to, I could play games on the bigger TV. But I sit so close to the monitor, that a 23" is big enough.

For the general consumer, sure. Sounds like a sneaky way of getting people into PC gaming. But whatever makes you happy. I'd personally recommend people to get a regular PC though, although I'd need to take a closer look at the specs and price point before I make that recommendation.

i want to see it overtake windows but it looks like it will take years for that to happen. if you ask me they should have made the steambox in 2008-2009

As a PC gamer I feel it's very meh. It's bassicaly crippled gaming pc with fraction of Windows's gaming library and pad, that while nice idea, will suck in PC-centric titles compared to mouse and KB and suck in console centric titles compared to 360 pad.

Even if I would want to put my PC in a living room I would just make my own build and just throw Windows Steam in Big Picture Mode, at most buying just the Steambox pad. Makes much more sense.

No real feelings towards it, it is a good solution for people WHO are intimidated by PC gaming, and it might be a good solution for those used to the console envioment.

The way I see it, the steambox might be the prototype of the NeXT kind of Console, where each former console maker simply has a service, and 3rd party will stand for the hardware, as the current console status is so unsustainable that it is not even funny. The lack of "walled gardens" will also be a benefit only wished for by those WHO are either insecure about choice.

So basicly, Take a look Lems and Cows, the steambox is what your beloved console makers are trying to make, just more advanced. Sheep are not really part of this given the consoles Nintendomakes does not try to imitate pcs to begin with, and Hermits take a look at what the possabilities exists here. A console/PC hybrid with pretty much all the advantages of a PC, yet made to go for those not willing to spend too much time and effort.

All in all it is a good exercise in testing new venues, I do not think it will change the World. I do fee llike it will Lead to what will change the World of gaming though. And no side of the fence is going to like it very much.

I don't get it.

1. PC gamers have a gaming PC that they can already hook up to TV's if they wanted to... Most don't because they would rather have a higher resolution monitor or a faster monitor over a TV.
2. Console gamers already think PC's are expensive... Why would a expensive steam box appeal to them?

Personally I think they are just wasting their time and I am not even going to get into the marketing they would need to use in order to catch enough momentum to get the attention of publishers.

If they had a big launch press conference with 2-3 SKU's for different budgets, have developers talk about the benifits and so on... With gaming and non gaming press attending I and many other's could be swayed into the hype to buy something that you can already do.

Unfortunately its announcement was... Erm poor and has 0% of a chance of actually being a choice or enough of one that would catch the attention of average joe.

Its a waste of time.

Anyone want a Steam box?... ever used lego?... Buy some parts and put it together and install a OS. Then install Avast and then install Steam. Connect it to your TV... Buy a 360 controller then sit on your couch and play a game.

It's not called a Steam box.

It'll provide a nice, powerful pre-built system option for people who are not familiar with PC hardware and in a small size.

It'll encourage PC chasis engineers to create new designs based on small form-factors.

It'll encourage new ways of fitting PCI-E devices.

Those who are not familiar with PC hardware will be hard pressed to decide which Steam Box variant to buy.

Points 2 and 3 apply to any console, not just the Steam Box. It's motivated by the fact that you're not using off-the-shelf products.

On topic, I see no real benefit for it of present, but it may help push linux as a viable OS for gaming.

It's fairly self explanitory. Price to performance. Not only that but it doesn't differ from the current market of users who buy pre-built systems with a lack of PC hardware knowledge.

Points 2 and 3 are related to PC gaming, not console gaming. If someone wants to play console games on a console, they won't buy a Steam OS based system so bringing that up isn't relevant.

I don't even have my consoles hooked up to a TV. Why would I? I have an ASUS 144 Hz 1 ms gaming monitor...there's no such thing as a gaming TV

I like the idea only because I have no idea how to build a PC. I always seek the PC Boards whenever I plan on upgrading :p

If I didn't have a PC i'd buy this over the xbone no doubt and it would a tough choice between this and the PS4.

You aren't part of the pinnacle of anything if you are still running a single 670. Or does the Plasma TV turn that card into a 3 way 780ti setup?

Scientifically it has been proven that the number is roughly 1337% better than other forms of display so you would essentially need a GPU 1337% faster than a GTX 670 in order to get the same experience as that on any other form of display.

For example if you you were running a game on low settings on a LCD it would look bad but if you were running it on low settings on a plasma what you would be experiencing is essentially what you would get if you were playing a game on ultra settings on a LCD.

I don't understand what audience the Steam Machine is supposed to appeal to. I can't see many console gamers choosing it over the Xbox One and PS4, and I can't see PC gamers buying it over just building their own gaming PC.

The only audience I can see it selling to are people that are much more interested in PC exclusive games than console exclusive games, but have no idea how to build their own PC, which I think is a very small audience. I'm expecting it to flop.

I'll echo what I said in another thread. The controller is certainly interesting, but the hardware does nothing to entice the console gamer. Its still a case of fragmentation being a major issue, IMO one of a consoles strengths is not having varied strengths and powers of system. A game on a console will play exactly as intended, with the Steambox you have the same issue as a normal PC, with regard to differing specs. Then the upgrading etc begins. I just see the Steambox as a completely pointless product.

I think it's a great move as it will attract people who don't want to open the hardware and figgle with the innards and the operating system, aka console gamers (lulz), and it could encourage developers to make their games compatible with Linux which is also a great move considering how many dicks Windows is sucking right now.

It don't really effect me at all. I can count on one hand the amount of times in the past 3 years I really wanted to play my PC games in my living room.

It's not a game console and it's not trying to compete against the PS4/Xbox One/WiiU. In order to get the most out of it you need to already own a gaming PC and then have a decent home network. Even if you get a super powerful Steam Machine, for the first few years you'll be extremely limited on what you can play natively on the device.

Furthermore the controller is an interesting concept, but the goal of having steam controller players play with mouse and keyboard users is just a fantasy. Even if the new controller allows for a higher degree of accuracy than a standard analog stick based controller, it will still lack the responsiveness of a mouse and keyboard and will be lacking in competitive environments.

I already have a PC, so I have no use for it.

Sales wise the steam box is going to be a major flop. People are buying laptops and tablets these days not desktop computers.

meh my Home THeater setup is better. 60" Plasma and 5k Dollar audio System, which includes a $1600 subwoofer which shakes the whole house when firing shotguns and throwing grenades.

That's your opinion. It is of my opinion that your setup is shit unless you have high end speakers, and a subwoofer capable of shaking the house. (12hz @ 100db is amazing)

60 FPS @ 1080p on the best TV for your money of 2013 gets the job done visually. But the audio is always just as important.
