Ive been getting in an argument with my friend over this. He says consoles have a wider range of games than PC, I beg to differ. Hes accepting XBLA games and the like while im accepting internet flash games (which ill agree is going a bit too far).

This is taking into account all genres and everything, no this gen only, no fanboyism, this should just be a logical look at the platforms.

Please note: Im not saying PC is better or console is better. There are only so many genres and I think that both PC and consoles are about equal.

There is no argument. When you can play games like Flight Sim X, X3, Hearts of Iron, Silent Hunter, ARMA, Kings Bounty, Football Manager, EVE Online, WoW or one of many indie titles that would never get a look in the console scene like The Void or The Path on your Xbox, things look a little more even. But great diversity in gaming, and a controller just don't go together. There's always a base level of simplicity that can't be replicated until you introduce a keyboard and all it's keys. This is without even considering Mods, facebook titles, web browser games etc.

Considering apart the wii consoles cant play most last gens xbox/PS2 games its obvious which platform has the most variety and its most obvious if we compare Pc with 1 console instead all together Besides you can find alot of niche genres on PC

PC without a doubt. There are certain genres that are impossible to play on the console or completely non-existent, the PC can play ALL genres, all of them. The library of PC games, if you include all sorts of internet/browser based games, are simply HUMONGOUS. wth, even using caps lock seems like a major understatement, would need like a 3d vision with words flying off your screen and into your brain.

untill console can have keyboard and mouse support for every game out of the box, then no they dont have the same amount of games. PC has more games and more genres of games then consoles do.

Right: Revision of the question. My friend thinks that most people are interpreting the question as "Which has the most games". So new question: "Which has a more diverse range of games?"

The PC does. It's an open platform, it's only natural to have a more diverse library - anyone can make a game.

I prefer consoles, but this isnt an argument. Pc wins by a landslide, you can pretty much play every new and old game on it. Its because the pc is timeless that it wins. It goes from super mario bros to starcraft to pandemic 2. Theres alot of games to play on pc.

PC. Also, a somewhat better comparison to XBLA titles might be the huge range of non-flash indie games for sale on the PC, occupying an enormous range of genres.

The fact that you have to even combine 3 systems (Wii/360/PS3) as consoles to even compare to PC tells me all i need to know. I just look at my list of games i own on my PC, then look at the games i own on all 3 consoles.

PC by far has the biggest diversity in games. Most console gamers probably don't even know of most of the games on PC.

EDIT: i just noticed my own sig lol, the choice of genres in that tiny selection of games is pretty impressive, thats just the games i have on the go now. it has RTS,TBS, Driving, MMORPG, JRPG, RPG, Adventure, FPS lol

i voted PC but i can see his point.

and he might even be right if you take into account XBLA games. Counting flash games would be like counting XBL indie games... they usually suck.

XBLA games are at least created by professional game developers... so if you take those into account, he might be right. But i still think the PC edges consoles out.

Many of us probably play on consoles and PC, so we could tell the difference easily. PC wins in this topic hands down, no questions asked. While some genres I would rather play on consoles then on PC, there are many more I would rather play on PC then on consoles.

PC. Pretty sure you can count console MMO's on one hand, I'm sure one or two genres have a wider range on consoles though.

Wow, I didn't know that Flight Simulator could be played on a PS3 or X360? What about Rise of Flight or Silent Hunter III/IV/V? I don't see those sims on any consoles.

I won't rehash what has already been stated, but your friend wizened up. Now, does he understand that all games start out as PC games no matter what console it ends up on?

Consoles do have sim games though. He said PCs do everything console do genre wise and then some. I was just pointing out that this was false. Next time specify that you mean has MORE games in those genres.

consoles dont really have sims, at least not this gen. We arent talking about games like GT5, the games were talking about are far more realistic then that.

Please, there is no game even remotely like DCS Blackshark, ARMA or a multitude of other sims on console. Show me something remotely close to any of these games. While your at it, show me a space sim/trader like X3...

That's a minute example of games from genre's that cannot exist without a keyboard and mouse. PC's can always do what consoles can, but it doesn't work the other way around.

It doesn't really mater what you consider a sim or not. I don't really consider the Last Remnant a JRPG. Now what?

Probably talking about subgenres. Since only like 8 genres exist.

Space sim, mil-sim, flight sim, sub sim, grand strategy, turn-based strategy. I don't care if they are sub-genre's as they all play as different to each other as CoD does to Mario Galaxy.

Yes, a subgenre isn't such without the "genre" part, and like you said two action genre games like CoD and Mario Galaxy would be the same without sub divisions.

lets see.

MMORPG (that works)

MMORTS (and no they often have very little to do with normal rts games)

Sim games

Financial games

Programming games.

Even if you insist that MMO games are the same genre (Massive multiplayer online) they are seen as differnet genres, bot for Devs and for consumers.

and wait, aint that 5? so I guess my 4-5 aint that far off.

And a city building sim, is not the same genre as a militery sim, just a heads up ;)

Also there should be something like 20 genres all in all ;)

Just thinking about it, there are games I have on my steam list that I couldn't even define within a genre. Games like Uplink where you have to hack into systems around the world and steal sensitive data for clients, of DEFCON by the same dev.

True. Gaming genres are very vague for the most part. Many call Deus Ex a FPS or RPG or FPS/RPG. But if you analyze its gameplay mechanics its more of a Action Adventure or Action Adventure/RPG.
