Yahoo's (mainstream) take on E3

Console wars heat up for 2008: Sony impresses, Microsoft surprises, Nintendo disappoints

by Mike Smith

In the two days leading up to the year's biggest video games trade show, E3, it's become something of a tradition that the competing console manufacturers face off in a series of lavish press conferences. Now that 2008's round of announcements, demonstrations, trailers, and posturing are over, which console came out on top?

Despite rumors of price cuts, Microsoft opted to expand the hard drive of its mid-range offering instead of delivering any real savings to consumers. All the same, the 360's Dashboard interface is undergoing a serious overhaul this year, and looks to be coming out cleaner, with more downloadable games, and including custom avatars that are, not to mince words, a complete rip-off of Nintendo's Miis. ("Where else could you get an avatar creation system but on Xbox Live?" one developer commented. We have no idea.) On-demand movie and TV programming courtesy of Netflix will expand the 360's already bulging video abilities, and a new motion-sensing microphone controller will deliver new horrors to the terrifying world of karaoke games.

Sony put together a similar performance, shuffling its PS3 package offerings to little real effect (although you might pick up a bargain as retailers clear stock of the older lines). It's also expanding its video offerings by offering online movie rentals from an impressive portfolio of studios -- and you can take them on the road on your PSP, too. Unlike Microsoft's offerings, which have a vague "fall" ETA, Sony's new online features should be available by the time you read this.

That wasn't all, though. Sony's press conference rolled out a set of game trailers that had fans cheering: a new God of War game on PS3, a vast-looking massive action game named MAG, and a couple of promising superhero games: one massively-multiplayer title based on the DC superhero universe, and one futuristic, open-city game from the Sly Cooper studio. It's a great selection, and one that leaves Microsoft's roster of Gears of War 2 and Fable II looking a little tired.

Mind you, that wasn't the end of the software story. Although the Sony execs weren't visibly injured, Microsoft's press conference delivered them a metaphorical punch to the gut: the absolutely huge Final Fantasy series is no longer a PlayStation exclusive. Final Fantasy XIII will be coming to the 360, and unless you count the oddball, massively-multiplayer XI (we don't) it's the first time any of the modern Final Fantasy games have gone cross-platform. If nothing else dropped jaws at the Microsoft do, this announcement sure did.

In contrast, it was hard to dodge the grumbling on the way out of the Nintendo event. Where were the ****c franchises we all know and love? Where, for that matter, was Mario? Nintendo fans had to make do with a new Animal Crossing title, and an oh-so-vague mention of a Grand Theft Auto game on the DS handheld. Accessories like the MotionPlus controller plug-in and the WiiSpeak microphone (pictured below) are all very well, but don't we have enough bits of plastic cluttering up our houses already?

Which, naturally, is Nintendo's modus operandi since the release of the Wii. For every disgruntled Nintendo hardcore fan, there's a whole houseful of delighted non-gamers enthused at the thought of getting together to play music without needing a bunch of instruments or, you know, any skill. But can Nintendo really deliver a music game experience that's as compelling as Rock Band?

Perhaps, perhaps not. Either way, this year's E3, so far, belongs to Sony -- and if you're still on the fence about which new system you're going to spring for, your decision just got a whole lot tougher.

In short "We" (Yahoo) decided to stick it to Microsoft because "We" (Yahoo) have the biggest joke of an excutive board who is now the laughing stock on Wall Street. "We" (Yahoo) decided to go the way of Fox-News and start reporting completly biased information.

Anyone who watched all the conferences know's that Sony's was lackluster. Seriously only two games they showed had actual gameplay and those are the only ones releasing this year. Yahoo needs to stick with what they are good at. Being a second rate search engine.

Meh, I wasn't impressed with Sony's conference or Microsoft's either, though the announcement of Final Fantasy XIII going multiplatform made me chuckle. Nintendo did disappoint in alot of ways but there was some good to be taken from it as well. I'm happy to see voice chat finally being supported and the Wii Motion Plus is definitely something to look forward too (especially with a new Zelda game hopefully in the works). Yea I'm not overly jazzed for Animal Crossing or Wii Music, but people act like this is the only event to make big announcements, and with E3 quickly losing its appeal I wouldn't be surprised if all three companies saved their real heavy hitters for later game shows. I doubt this is the last we'll hear from Nintendo this year, just like I doubt this is the last we'll hear from Sony or Microsoft. No one really performed well this year at E3 in my eyes and I guess we are all stuck waiting for the next big show to truly get some amazing news.

I still think 360 is the best system now, and will continue to be until the next generation comes out.

X360 is rollin' right now, they need some more credit for their announcements....I mean nobody is talkin' about that Portal game...I'm seriously stoked for that. Plus the new dash and the FFXIII megaton and then demoing the great games like Fallout 3 (getting exclusive 360 DLC)......they did well IMO.

In all seriousness now, IMO, MS won E3 just for that FFXIII announcement, but other than that MS and Sony tied, while Nintendo... well as I said they got drums man, but either way, I enjoyed E3 even though it was a bit disappointing.

 that was horrible, haven't seen a gif of that lady playing that snowboarding game yet *hint hint*, anyways I guess since FF or JRPGs or RPGs in general don't interest me the announcment didn't really do much for me, but I can see how HUGE of an announcment it was/is.

Don't forget Banjo-Kazooie on the XBLA which could lay the ground work for Conker, Perfect Dark, and Banjo-Tooie to make its way to the XBLA too.

MS unvieled the new dashboard (which has many new features) and FF13 (basically) as well as a confirmation for Banjo-Kazooie and Tooie on the arcade complete with stop n swap. For the record, that last part, stop n swap, is enough for harcdcore banjoi fans to say that MS had the best conference

. Sony unvield 2 games (meg and uhh... Ill think of the other)

ninty did nothing.

I really fail to see how one big game will COMPLETELY DESTROY Sony.

Besides, I say its a bit of an evil plot. Sony probably figured "We release the rights to have the game on the Xbox360. Some gamers buy it and some of those like it. Now, for the next few games, we don't release the rights for it to go on the Xbox360. And when we make another sequel, and it is exclusive, the people who really want to play it must buy a PS3."

Thats the way I see it. =/

Now, If Microsoft was smart, they'd release Halo 4 on the PS3 as well, therefore causing huge crowds to also buy an Xbox360 for the 5th Halo installment.

and somethings else that peopz must have not NOTICED at E3.....the announcment by MR. Square-Enix himself that The Last Remnant will be EXCLUSIVE to 360(timed, but means alot in this business these days :P ). Yep, LR comes out first on 360, has 2 other EXCLUSIVES from square-enix, and one STEAL(FF13).....lookin' like MS is the RPG king for this gen :)

I never said it would. Is that what you are thinking?

Sony are in third place and need all the major exclusives they can get. Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy XIII....

They put bluntly what all mainstream gaming sources have been dodging around. They didn't bring up FF13 though.

Gamerman12362

Fixed. Now, how exactly did MS have the best conference? Granted, they were equal in pretty much everything untill the games, in which Sony delivered upon in terms of new IP's and sequels to be excited about for all 3 of their platforms, while all we got from MS was Lips and some good arcade titles. I honestly thought Sony won, but not by a gigantic margin by any means, as both companies delivered well in what they were trying to do.

The topic title is perfect. Sony impressed, MS surprised, and Nintendo disappointed.

Yeah I saw that on Yahoo. Then I remember something about Microsoft wanted to buy Yahoo but there were money issues or something like that, so yeah.

They should retitle it to: LBP impresses, Microsoft surprises, Nintendo disappoints.

You see...this is what amazes me.

Sony and Ms basically went the same route in terms of their presentation.

Sony releases psn updates, store updates, and movie rentals

Ms releases live updates, a new dashboard, and netflix.

With that in mind, all we have to look at is the games.

Ms shows 4 games(none of which are new, and only 2 of which are exclusive) and demo's them. They also show new arcade titles

Sony demo's 2 games, yet debuts MANY new titles on the ps3, ps2, and psp. They also show new arcade titles.

Now, with that in mind, do people really prefer seeing 4 titles that they already knew about for E3(which they'll see after the conference anyways??) or wouldnt they rather see new IP's and exclusives.

Now, knowing that Ms and Sony both took nearly identical pathways in their conference(besides gamewise), what makes Sony's so much more lackluster than Ms's? I'd really like to know, as both seemed completely equal to me.

News after news, forums after forums, polls after polls, it shows that Microsoft had the best conference between the three.
