PC gaming could disappear and gaming could probably suvive perfectly well on consoles.TheGrat1
It would survive on consoles, but it would be forever crippled
Don't you think that consoles have made games more accessilble to people. I was a PC gamer myself but was not able to play newer games because my hardware was not upto it and neither I was able to upgrade them because they were so pricey. But now with consoles I am able to play all the games without any hassels. You may have all the time and money to constantly upgrade your hardware to play the games at their full graphics settings. But not most of us. Most of you who complain that consoles should not be present are purely selfish. You are not able to digest the fact that most developers are now concerned about consoles. Well they will be because they get profit from them. Most PC gamers use pirated copies of games and complain that consoles are bad, this and that. More and more people are coming to games beacuse of consoles and you think this is bad for gaming. Developers are using new ideas in gaming as there is immense compition and you think this is bad for gaming? Shame on you.. The truth is that consoles are here to stay as the PC gaming. So don't be selfish and enjoy the games.Has this occurred to anyone else? Although right now PC gaming definitely has it's flaws, if somehow there were no more consoles gaming could adjust and be better than ever? Think about it, the system has incredible potential to fulfill everything that current consoles are doing. As for the price they would simply start making PC parts that do nothing but play games for those who can't afford to buy a supercomputer for thousands of dollars. No more having to buy new consoles or controllers, if you want a certain game you just buy a new part and pop into your gaming PC. These gaming PCs would be like consoles except that everyone would have theirs built exactly how they want it. And the problem of a monopoly could be easily solved if Apple got serious on the matter. I'm not saying I necessarily want this to happen or that PCs are currently the best system, I'm just saying that they certainly have the potential to be amazing in the absence of consoles.

well consoles have broken online when a is put out look at socom. at least pc developers have the excuse of working with such a wide range of hardwareThe problem I always had with a PC and games is you never knew if the game was going to work! Patch this, patch that, not enough memory, wrong video card! With a console you always knew the game was going to work, and that's great, IMO!

Uhmmm...okay. On the flip side, PCs could disappear and gaming would survive perfectly well also. So I'm not clear on your point.

Why is that? I seem to recall consoles like the Atari 2600 coming out and playing games well before there were PCs. I seem to recall arcades in existance as well for people who didn't have consoles to go play their videogames.
PC came after. So it seems backwards to me to then turn around and say gaming would be "forever crippled" without PCs.
Sure gaming would survive, but not anywhere near in the same manner that we have now. I've had computers in my home since 1982 (Vic20 anyone) snd until the NES came along I enjoyed my C64 very much, but you want to know how many games I actually bought during that time 3, the rest were all pirated floppies. Then came PCs and I still played a few games on mine, put I was always very concerned about the system requirements. Then I found out that as you upgrade and change operating systems, you can't play your older games :( To be honest, I just couldn't be bothered to play games on a PC anymore outside of your basic flash webgames.
Average people want easy, convientant gaming, which unfortunately even the consoles are getting further away from. I want to be able to sit down, throw a disc in my system and start playing. Now it's "Do I install the game", "Do I have enough space, or do I have to choose something to delete?" Is 20gb big enough for me, or do I need 60, what about 120gb? "Is there a patch for this?"
If only PC gaming existed, I think you'd end up with an even bigger split between casual and hardcore gamers than you have now.
The industry would keel over and die if the consoles didn't exist. Cutting out the majority of the userbase is a fantastic idea. Silent-Halnow, certainly, but what's to say, in 10-20 years, you have a central hardwired computer in your home that effortlessly beams any game digitally to your TV?

Sorry, we're not in early 80s anymore. You kill PCgaming you kill new talent flow into industry. The entry cost of console development is too big for any amateur to afford it. Even in japan newbies get their first credits doing PC doujin games, not console one. You would also kill any innovation in gameplay, as it ALL comes from PC nowadays, console games are too expensive to make for publishers to rish innovation. Third modern consoles completely rely on PC tech, even Wii, remove PCgaming you kill PC tech advancemement and this makes designing and manufacturing consoles far more expensive than nowadays (and it's already expensive today). And last... say goodbyr to any potential new markets emergin anytime soon. PCgaming is what is spreading gaming around the world, not console gaming, which is expensive luxury.

pc is very expensive, unlikeconsoles whomupgrade get no viruses, and play for 5 or more years, pc only last about a month before you have to update it ,

Do people ever get tired of spouting the same ignorant crap?
- PC is not expensive. You can buy a pre-built PC for uner $300 these days. It may not run new games but the back library of games from the past decade are more than worth playing. Half Life, Deus Ex, System Shock 2, StarCraft, Age of Empires II, Knights of the Old Republic, Call of Duty, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, Jedi Outcast, Republiuc Commando... etc.
- PC's don't get viruses is you protect yourself properly with firewalls and anti-virus programs.
- Since when do consoles play for more than 5 years? Every 5 years a new console is released and the old one (minus the PS and PS2) gets shoved into a drawer, into a box or sold for the new fancy one.
- Get your crap out of here. I've been playing on the same computer now since December 2004. If I don't get a new computer, that will be FIVE years this coming December. FIVE. With barely enough upgrades to consider it even changed. The only thing that has been added is 1GB of extra RAM and a free replacement of a burned out video card (thanks to a replacement program warranty, when my card got fried, they replaced it free with something comparable).
- A $600 PC properly built could walk all over both the 360 and PS3 combined. It isn't the PC's fault you bought an overpriced Dell desktop.
- Funny, the Wii with the best selection of games? How ironic.

[QUOTE="Innocentguy757"]Except PC gaming just isn't fun when you have a bunch of your friends over, or you live in a college dorm, like me.imprezawrx500how is a lan party not fun? plus console games are now based around online and many games lack any sort of split screen play It's really not the easiest to get a lan party. Consoles are readily available to play with friends. Lan parties have to be planned and set up, and without a certain number of people just isn't fun.

NOt in the 80's anymore? What does that have to do with anything? The idea at hand is that somehow consoles would suffer if there was no PC games. This is demonstrablty false because, in reality, consoles and gaming existed BEFORE PCs were available. To argue NOW that we OWE gamings advancement and success to PC is rewriting history. The same is true for saying gaming is popular BECAUSE of PCs. Gaming came first. PCs are simply popular choices for games because most households around the world have one. That is like saying Cars would suffer if people didn't have garages.
Meanwhile, this idea that talent and hardware, etcwould suddenly STOP if PCs died is equally rdiculous. Again, people were making games in arcades and early consoles. THerefore, someone had to be making hardware and learning programming, etc. It seems reasonable to assume that if PCs were no longer gaming machines, that developers and tech makers would still exist, they would just be more specialized in their own specific areas.
Finally, I almost spit my drink out my nose and the idea that PCs innovate all games. Really? Gee, how did I ever play fighting games before PCs came around. Racing games? Action games? And that also explains why so many games on PC are like Metal Gear Solid, God of War, Ico, Shadow of COlossus, etc, etc, etc. Wow...good thing PC was around to come up with those games because otherwise I'd never get a chance to play them. I'm NOT saying PC doesn't innovate, just that it has its own thing (ie Western RPGs, FPS, RTS) and consoles have their own thing. But it is completely ignorant, in my view, to act like PC is the only thing that is innovating and pushing gaming forward. If you ask me, PC is just as bad as consoles for releasing tons of "me too" games and they worry more about graphical improvement than actual innovation in terms of NEW games, genres, gameplay, etc.
Has this occurred to anyone else? Although right now PC gaming definitely has it's flaws, if somehow there were no more consoles gaming could adjust and be better than ever? I don't think so. There will always be game consoles, so at least something similar. Gaming needs to be done in the family room and not in the computer room in front of a 19in screen. With all the new 1080p HDTV's coming out, gaming will improve with game consoles hooked to HDTV. What you are talking about is a set_top_box like "The Phantom" & "The DIScover" game console - http://www.digitalinteractive.net/http://internetgames.about.com/library/weekly/aadiscovera.htm
All of this has been tried with failed ventures. Some day someone will get it right, but for now, game consoles is the way to go for playing awesome games. Eventually these games will all be digitally distributed, but for now we'll continue to purchase games at Wal-Mart, Gamestop, Toys R Us, etc..

PC Games sales have dropped over the past 2 years. Back in 2006 it had hit a high of $1 billion in PC software sales. Now it's down to $700 mil. Even if you included STEAM and other digital distribution sales it would still be lower. Console software sales is more then 10x's that amount.

Actually PC Gaming came first. You must be younger then 30yrs. I've been gaming since pong and space wars. lol!! Everything started on the PC before Atari 2600. There were actually portable devices that you could hook up to your T.V. and play pong, soccor, etc. Still all these things happened after the games were created on the PC. I believe some M.I.T. students created some of the first games. Many of then started as TEXT only games like Tank, Adventure, Star Trek that were written in basic. Man, those were the days, playing these games in High School back in the early 80's. They were crude, but fun.

I'm older than 30 years, and yo make a good point. Games are MADE on PC. My point was simply that gaming became popular and widespread thanks to consoles and arcades because home PCs were extremely rare in the late 70s and early 80s. I just find it naive to think that without GAMING PCs, somehow consoles would suffer a lack of innovation or interest.
Personally, I think either group would do just fine if one of them got out of gaming. But I also beleive that consoles are more accessible for mass audiences and for that reason, I believe interest in gaming would actually decrease if consoles disappeared. I'm not convinced interest in gaming would decrease if PCs stopped being about gaming. I'm not arguing that PCs as a whole would disappear.

Uhmmm....that was what started this thread.
1) A gaming industry without PC's would be an extinct gaming industry. PC hardware and software development is what keeps console gaming alive. Without PC gaming, gaming is nothing. If PC actually went under, then all the technological and software innovations would be shouldered on the console software developers and hardware manufacturers.
2) At least PC gamers aren't living in the early '80's anymore. Consoles might have popularized gaming with the general public back then, but PC's innovate everything... and it is the most popular gaming platform today, which is key.foxhound_fox
1) Again, this isn't true. The issue is GAMING...not whether or not PCs as a whole would not exist. If consoles disappeared vs. gaming PCs. I don't think anybody is saying that computers as a whole would vanish. Just that computers for gaming would vanish.
2) PC's do not innovate everything. I've seen countless games on consoles that are just as innovative and original as what the PC does. When I see games like God of War, Ico, Shadow of COlossus, Mark of Kri, etc being MADE on PC (not just ported), then I will agree that only PC innovates and nobody else. As for the PC being the most popular gaming platform...that is a bit of misleading information. CONSOLES AS A WHOLE make more money and have more users. The PC thing is misleading because it takes all PC users and compares it to individual consoles.

If everyone had a good PC, and every devloper started to only make PC games, it would be the only platform we would ever need.
PC's can support all controllers, Arcade Sticks, Racing wheels, And if you want a HDTV you can even hook it up to one, PC gaming can do it all, and im tired of lazy devs paying attetion to that. But some are now like Capcom for Dead Rising 2 and hopefully RE5 and Criterion for Burnout Paradice ultimate box
