Is this a new word people are making up. I keep reading people say such and such is being dumbed down on consoles etc... I read ths about Alan Wake. MAfia II, etc.. I could buy this back in the day(ie when diablo was out on the pc and came to the consoles, same with several other games that were extremely dumbed down). But that isnt the case these days. Console versions of these games are identical nowadays and clearly superior in a lot of cases due to downloadable content etc....

I some what agree, the law of diminishing returns is coming and fast... Most console counter part don't look horrible in comparion.. I bet the average consumer could not tell the difference.. Next generation, what will be the point(of a PC besides KB/M). What the fact that the console 10000 by 10000 resolution texture is less than the 12000 by 12000 PC res? Also, even with resolution the differnce between 1080p and something like 2500 by 1600(or what ever it is) is small....

I can't believe you people actually accepted this trend of "downloadable content". It's just redicilous.

I said the average consumer could not tell much of a differnece.. By next-gen diminishing returns will be in pretty much full effect so the additions to the PC version then will cause extremly minial differneces.

You think consolization is something new? It has been around for quite some time, and it has drastically affected a number of different genres; Deus Ex, The Elder Scrolls, Rainbow Six, and many more. Iti s a term being used by the press now as well http://www.gamebanshee.com/news/static/EEZlApppVZFWKMBMrV.php What started out as a joke amongst us hermits in System Wars (just like consolite), is spreading amongst the industry to designate a number of different games which suffer from joint development between consoles and PCs. It is a phenomenon that is happening, just as the Great Casualisation is being caused by the Wii and others.

While whether or not games are being dumbed down for consoles is easily an arguable point, the word consolization is definantly not a new term. I can tell you I have heard this term thrown around since at least the days of the SNES.

Stopped reading there. :|

..

Oh wait.. that's the end of the post. Ah well,

Anyway, whatever you want to call it; "consolization", "consolitis", "dumbing down" and "casualization" are few of the words I've seen, but it is very much real.

When making a game for consoles, you have to broaden your audience as much as possible, so that you will make enough money to cover the HUGE development/hype costs. When making a PC game, if you have a small budget you can make it to appeal to certain niche only and still make profit - which is one of the reasons I enjoy PC gaming more.

So does that mean the average consumer have a average PC?

And really... you have no idea what your talking about... the resolution thing looks way over your head.

i feel now would be an appropriate time to mention Spore, which you for some reason failed to mention whilst blaming casualisation on every platform except PC.

The law of deminishing returns. I believe thats when one factor of production is fixed and one is variable. If you increase the variable factor past a point, your average costs will start to rise but your output will stay the same, maybe even fall. An example of this could be too many factory workers getting in each others way. What do you mena by this in the currunt context?

Payed for DLC. What grinds my gears is that its being forced on the PC. Plus devs are cutting bits out to add as DLC later down the line. I hate DLC. I havent bought any for 2 years.

I blame the ps2, xbox, 360 and ps3 for consolization and the Wii for causalization.

[QUOTE="Nerkcon"] Even though I think I know where you're going with this... explain.

Consolization is the explanation for the phenomenon that, as games are jointly developed between the PC and the consoles, they trend towards a more casual gameplay mechanic setup. Casualization is the explanation for the phenomenon that, as more people are being introduced to the industry, regardless of if it is multiple platforms, the general taste of video games in the industry begins to be more casual. Casualization can take place on a single platform; PC, Wii, 360, or PS3. Since 'consoles' are generally regarded in the same parent taxonomy, it applies when dealing with Wii versus 360 and PS3. In contrast, since the PC is largely seen by people as being in an entirely different taxonomy than the other three platforms, although debateable, the term consolization is used to refer to this.

Please learn something about PC gaming before posting about it again in the future. All you manages with this thread was massive self ownage. You made it crystal clear you are no PC gamer and know next to nothing about it. My personnal favorite part of your self ownage post was the DLC comment. Anyways, thanks for such a great laugh.

PC Gamers are just jealous because they have such a difficult time trying to play anything these days, what with their DRM and compatiability issues. Of course they can have SLIGHTLY better graphics at the expense of that, but it's hardly worth it.

PC Gaming damaged itself, and now they can't accept that because of their elitist attitudes, so they blame it on something else.

Then to you the average consumer is blind then, right? I mean that's the only way they couldn't tell the difference is if they were blind. It's not like it takes a computer wiz to tell the difference. All that is needed is vision. The ability to see. Man this thread is great. A lot of good laughs.

Yes another great laugh from another person that seems to know next to nothing about PC gaming. I have never had a compatibility issues with any PC game and I am using Vista.

It also explains how consoles are becoming more and more like miniature PC's doesn't it?

I love how, when games are simplified to reflect the realities of the wider audience required to cover the development costs of AAA games, it's the consolites' fault. But when it comes time to include all the casual gamers on PC in their numbers, suddenly those individuals are blameless.

Funny, that.

I'm not sure what Sony exec dreamed that up. "Let's whack every piece of hardware we've ever made onto the board!" "Oh **** that's expensive... cut it back out!" Honestly, they would've been better off just not doing it in the first place.

I REALLY hate that term.

It's the DEVELOPER'S fault, not the consoles.
