I was thinking how the console makers (mostly Sony and Microsoft) plan to cool their next generation of consoles?

Even though the hardware will be outdated compared to PC's hardware, they will clearly still be fairly powerful when compared to the current gen consoles. Unless they make the consoles larger, how do they plan to heep the CPU and GPU cool without using increadibly fast (and therefore loud) fans?

I am a PC gamer an therefore very familiar with cooling my system. I have multiple fans on the front, rear, side, and top of my case as well as fans on my CPU (duh), GPU (again, duh), and also my RAM (Not exaclty needed, but they came with the RAM).

Do you guys think that fan sound with be a problem for the next generation of consoles?

If they are very loud, will that effect your purchasing decision?

Will you simply invest in quality headphones?

I dont understand, my pc has quite a number of fans but its not so loud that it annoys me despite it being in close proximity. Console gamers tend to sit farther from their consoles, so even more so fan noise would be kept minimal. I think its going to be in the design and palcement of parts to prevent overheating, as well as adding probably smaller fans to everything

I heard that consoles designed by professional electrical engineers are better designed than most PC built by a bunch of non-professional PC enthusiasts, and as such do not require as much cooling.

Haha, my PS3 runs hotter than my computer and my computer is just as quiet as the PS3. Low temps on your PC does not mean you're going to have loud fans.

Hopefully they're quieter than this gen and hopefully ms won't fail again.. I think they should let the consoles get fatter though, get some bigger heat sinks and larger, quieter fans.

tutt3r

This is exactly what I said. What will they do unless they increase the size of the consoles?

My PC has many fans, but runs very quiet and does so because it is big which allows for more airflow and more fans. Because there are so many fans, they do not need to all run at 100% fan speed.

If the consoles are the same size as they are this generation, then that doesn't allow for that many fans.

I like the diiscussion, except for the one that I quoted above...

Considering how loud the 360 fan was (the first "gen") I find it pretty hard to believe they can get any louder.

This. After a few time of playing you will start getting hiccups in the performance because of the imminent overheating, or if it has a good solution it usually is some loud fan, that still will just gradually reach an imminent overheating but slower.

Well, I plan on getting some gaming headphones anyway, so if they're rather loud, it shouldn't bother me. Whatever they do, I just want the systems to stay cool as possible, lol. Larger boxes won't bother me.

Arto, are there times that you don't use your headphones? If so, does the sound of the fans ever interrupt your experience, considering the PC is fairly close to you?

Unless your fan sucks or you have it on really, really high, it's usually just a hum in the background. My top fan is slightly loose so there is a little bit of rattling, but it's not really that annoying. That said, you can hear the computer from pretty far away.

The tech is out there to cool hot electronics. The question is are they gonna penny pinch?

Heck video cards do it all the time.

The best way to keep consoles cool is to immerse them in water, its not recommended to stand in the same water at the same time however.

The way MS and PS3 are going to over come heating is by using APU's(MS is alreay looking at AMD's Fusion 2) which uses less power and produces less heat and the tech allows smaller systems but the performance isnt going to mind blowing or really surpass any modern midranged gaming Pc out today even if they release them in 2013. MS is going to try to leave the RRoD in the past going with APU tech.

The fan on our 360 Elite was quite loud.

I am rather surprised that you could hear the fan over the DVD drive in the older models. :P I really appreciate my Xbox 360 S--damn thing is more quiet than the PS3 Slim, which already is very quiet.

It was? I've seen pictures of it, and it just looks like a heatsink on it's side with a heat pipe, not a water system like the corsair h50,60,70's(which aren't all that expensive)

Mostly by heat pipe heat sink+fan designs and premium silicon i.e. i.e. less fabrication imperfections/less electrical resistance/less heat/less power consumption. High performance mobile parts cost more than their desktop counterparts.

For example,

AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5730 (400 SPUs at 650Mhz) consumes around 26 watts.

AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5830 (800 SPUs at 500Mhz) consumes around 25 watts.

I do play my MP games with my headphones, but that is just so that I can hear the footsteps and such better, but my fans are not the main reason.

I can barely hear my fans (I can't hear any of the interior fans (GPU's fan is kept around 50% and I never hear it)). Is a very low "hum" I guess similar to when my PS3 slim first boots up, that is about as loud as my PC fans ever get. It is actually kind of nice to have it in the background as I sleep (even though I generally play a Netflix movie to go to sleep to).

Aside from no good exclusives and red-ringing three times, noise was one of the main reasons I sold my 360 a few years ago. My PS3s have generally been quiet, though the noise is starting to increase.

Consoles have alot more efficient cooling than most PC's, Sony is experts at this. Consoles are not limited to the standard upgradeable setup that PC's have inside, they can have the hardware setup just the way they want according to the cooling.

Laptops are more in the same league, they can cram alot of power into that tiny space. The biggest problem there is probably the powersupply.

I don't think you know what you are talking about.

Like I just said in my posts... My PC is quiet because it is so large that I can fit so many fans in it and it can have plenty of airflow inside. The new consoles will likely (I don't see how they wouldn't) have much more powerful hardware which will draw more power and therefore require more cooling. None of my fans run more than 50% fan speed becase I have so many, but the next gen consoles (unless they increase their size) do not have that perk.

Who knows? Maybe the hardware will only be a slight improvement to what it is now so that cooling isn't an issue. It is still kind of sad though to think of all the shortcuts that developers take to get games to look the way they do. Games on consoles still have not reached the 1080p 60 FPS bar that was set at the beginning of this generation whereas all my PC games run at around 100 FPS maxed out.

Well, I hope it all works out for the big three and developers...

it would not be a problem if they use some big fans rather than the tiny 40mm junk in the 360 and put in some real heat sinks rather than heatsinks designed for a radoen 9200.

A combination of better cooling and lower power consumption. A high quality fan can run much faster and still maintain low noise levels.

Ps3 has great cooling system, unlike 360 and very louder PChip-fire

I can't hear the fans on my Desktop PC at all, even when I'm running an uber-game.

Currently my GPU is at 50 C, and the fan is whisper-quiet. Stays just as quiet when under full load.
