With sony in its current financial state do you think well placed network breaches could kill sony within the next year ?

To Sony as a whole it's an annoyance. These people have no hope of doing anything meaningful to Sony. They could end up causing Sony to just say f*** it and cut off the gaming section if they keep it up long enough though. I doubt they have that much power though.[QUOTE="GreenGoblin2099"][QUOTE="ferret-gamer"]They won't kill Sony, it will be like a bee sting, annoying can cause a stumble and a little cursing but no real damage.Ace6301

a. sony is not in bad state, only the one in charge of the playstation, b. no they cant kill it, c. sony made a huge mistake running servers with old software and without physical firewall, i think they learned their lesson, if it was that easy to hack and destroy a companny by hackers, they would have done so long ago just because they can, but they cannot once sony runs decent servers.

No real damage?! Blashpemy! The April 2011 attacks was like a gunshot to the abdomen for Sony! :P
They could for a big part. Should they? No I don't see why.
Electronics companies are very reliant on internet, infrastructure, reputation, etc.

LOl really? that basically cost them 171 million ( improvements in network infrastructure and the welcome back program). For a company that has about 40 billion to spend thats a stumble. If the hackers accomplish anything it will be new legislation that gets passed that cracks down on them to the point where they will be treated like terrorist.
It definitely could kill sony's gaming devision unfortunately. Sony has not been doing well for a long time and the recent intrusion has done massive damage.Androvinus
Sony has reported profit 14 years in a row :|
Although there hardware has caused massive losses they still turned profit with game sales.

$40 billion to spend  The market value for Sony is only 27 billion and their stocks are on a downward slope. Also Sony to post an annual loss of $3.2 billion for its fiscal year ending in March 2011 - the second largest loss in company history
Sony as a whole not just gaming division are not doing that great.

Well, that's pretty much a given, but I guess we're talking about the gaming division here since we're... well, in a gaming forum.
Then why are we even talking about this? Since the PSN attack there hasn't been any hacks in the gaming division, and the latest "master plan" pertains to their music company BMG. They're talking about taking Sony out as a whole, and it just won't happen. Even if Sony had to shut down all its consumer networks until they could get everything sorted out and secure and broken up into as many servers as possible, people would still be buying their Sony Bravias, PS3s, Bloggies, Cybershots, Vaios, and the thousands of other high-end products they sell.[QUOTE="GreenGoblin2099"][QUOTE="Ace6301"] To Sony as a whole it's an annoyance. Sony should just cut off Syco music as Simon cowell throws way too much weight in an industry he knows nothing about imo.
PSN hack to sony is like earthquake to japan. it make massive problem but not enough to destroy/kill sony/japan.

Great comparison. You can hurt Sony, but you won't be able to destroy them completely. They still have their music division, movie division,TV division and electronic division ,so hackers wish they could destroy Sony but that won't happen.

The PSN and Sony situation is MUCH more than an annoyance. In fact it is financially and otherwise horribly detrimental to Sony. Plus, for them to ever consider cutting off the gaming section as you say in your post would be a GIANT financial blunder. Then why are we even talking about this? Gah, I remember getting those BMG music offers where they give you like 5 CDs for the prices of 1 and then just send you a random CD every month and expect you to pay for it. I was hoping they would die right then and there. They can take Simon Cow with them. :P[QUOTE="ferret-gamer"]They won't kill Sony, it will be like a bee sting, annoying can cause a stumble and a little cursing but no real damage.EdenProxyThe last bee sting is costing sony millions and million. Ohh also, for the people who complain about how we can't do what we want with our systems.
It's because of attacks like this that they don't allow us to. We blame sony. But I blame the hackers.
Its funny you guys insulting them and making assumptions like 'hur dur get a girlz frind'. But in all honesty do you think they care? also on an article they even said 'The fun wont stop' describing their next attack for when the store is up. They are no longer fighting for the customer now so they don't care about our opinions. Also when you saying 'can they kill sony' they take that as a challenge so its not a wise thread.give me £100 (cause im skint) a baseball bat,a blow torch and a pair of plyers and i'll f up these hill billy hackers *puts on gloves*

If it were to kill of their gaming department (highly unlikely) then there's a possibility that other departments will feel the sting. After all The Playstation brand was first and foremost a testing ground for their technology and features eg. DVD,Bluray, cell, media capabilities, networking, while gaming itself took a backseat. Without their gaming division Sony wont have anywhere to test the market without making huge risks.
If Sony took this this network and security rebuilding seriously, then they should have some of best security in the business for the gaming division. It might be the case that such a huge breach of PSN is not possible anymore. Due to Nintendo's inexperience with online networks they might be the low hanging fruit of the game industry so to speak.
