Nah, see sleeper hits usually gain unexpected success. A lot of people from System Wars here expect Mass Effect to do really well (and there are those who don't).

No way, a sleeper hit is when a game is made, and it seems like someone made it in their sleep, with the hit part being when they get slapped in the face for being so lazy. Sort of like many 360 to PS3 ports. Man, do those devs deserve a slap in the face. Maybe if they weren't sleeping off the grog they could port a decent game or two.

No, I don't think so.

The game is being made by a big developer, and has had magazine advertisement and lots of media.

The game is just as niche as Jade Empire, KOTOR, and all the other Bioware games. Don't be surprise it will sell just like the others. Why do people expect big big sales from this game is a surprise to me. WRPG are not popular...

We can call an apple an orange. But, then we'd be like... it's red, not orange (or even green).

*head explodes*

I agree with Socrates, it should sell somewhat similarly to KotOR, whatever those sales were like.

What's the difference between a "Sleeper Hit" and a "Cult Phenomenon?"

I dont think its niche as Jade Empire.

The whole sci fi setting and real time combat would appeal to a very broad audience. Hell WRPGs do sell well: Morrowind, Oblivion, Kotor, Diablo, Fallout just to name a few.

Nah b/c so much is expected of this game and it will get so much advertisement time when close to release from MS that everyone and their brother will see the images and grand scale of gaming on their local TV stations and it will more than likely sell like crazy - now I just hope it trully deserves it or.... TLHBO lol ;)

MTV forums? What's wrong with you?

Anyways, I bet most of those people on there are casuals who own BulletProff andcouldn't tella good game from a bad game if it hit them in the face.

Sleeper hit? No, most of the more serious gamers know of this game.

I agree that Bioware is a niche company but I think KOTOR was a big enough title that Mass Effect could not be considered a sleeper hit if it is fact a sales success.

Bioware are not niche, They gained critical acclaim way before KOTOR. With games like Baldurs gate 1-2 and Neverwinter nights. In fact Baldurs Gate 2 is widely considered the best dungeons and dragons game ever created. Although their first game - Shattered Steel wasn't such a great start. Didn't even get A here at GS.

For the topic, I think the darkness will be a sleeper hit. It's the spiritual successor to Riddick, one of the biggest sleeper hits in recent times.

Eh? WRPGs sell well.

The Diablo franchise has sold 17 million.

Oblivion's sold about 3 million.

The WoW franchise is at like 10+ million (and yes, MMORPGs are a subgenre of WRPGs if their from the West).

Not to mention Bioware games themselves!

KOTOR sold over 1 million in the US alone, NeverWinter Nights hit 2 million, Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 sold 2 million a piece.

Anything over 1 million is a big success.

How can one of the most highly anticipated games of the year be a Sleeper. It is going to be a hit or a Flop. Sleeper is not an option. You might be right that people on the MTV forums might not know about it. GTAIV might be the only game they have heard about most people have no Idea what games are coming out. You must have some time on your hands if you are spending it in the MTV forms. I bet there are very cerebral conversations going on their. NOT.

Nah, Mass Effect shouldn't be considered a sleeper hit, it has much too high of a hype level. I'm thinking something like Overlord might get the sleeper hit of the year award. It's coming out in a couple weeks and hardly no one knows about this game.

I totally disagree with that bolded statment in this time and age. If this was 10 years ago I would agree. As the consumer base gets larger so does the expectation of sales, hence I don't see 1 million sold as sucessful as 10 years ago.

I think it has gotten enough press with gammers but casuals may not know much about it. I think of it like this, If there are roughly 10 mil. 360's worldwide I think it will sell around 2 mil of that which is a success anyway you look at it. If the game is very good and word of mouth gets around to casuals and they start to play it you could see 3 mil or more. And that is not counting when it is released for PC.

Well, some of those games (Diablo, NWN, Baldur's Gate) are from virtually that long ago. Plus, we're in flux at the moment, we're jumping generations, so numbers are going to be much, much lower.

As for the others, anything over 1 million at this stage in the generation is excellent. Think about it, with an install base of 120 million units, the highest selling PS2 games were only ever 12-10 million.
