[QUOTE="Shadow_op"] Now don't get me wrong. I am a Hermit/sheep/lemming (shlermit?) So i'm no crazed cow.
But...to me? Half Life and Counter Strike are overrated. Alot.
Counter Strike is so generic and full oif hackers, it's not even fun anymore compared to shooters like Crysis, Far Cry 2 and Halo 3. Of course, it is an older game, but it doesn't change the fact that it is being made into a god send for PC gamers. In every arguement about shooters, It's always Half-Life this or Counter Strike that. IMO, Unreal Tournament >>>>>>>>Counterstrike.
As for Half-Life? What new did Half Life two bring? Dumb enemies, as far as I'm concerned. Now I have to buy it again just to play Team Fortress 2? Please. A gravity gun? Done in other games so much, it's not even unique anymore. Weapons? Shotgun, Machine gun, pistol, and Crowbar. A little variety won't hury ya ;)
One more thing....the Valva Engine SUCKS. It's time for an Upgrade!Look at the Valve engine. Now look at the Unreal engine. Notice a difference? If there is a Half-Life 3, it better be on a new engine, other wise it has no chance against beauties like Crysis or Far Cry 2. Thanks for reading...just in case....FLAME SHIELD, ON!

I would've said something like you except I wouldn't have used "overrated" as I've stated time and time again it is a silly word that doesn't have a place in discussion.
But really, my main beef with Half Life is people claiming it's story is original and that Halo or whatever isn't. After some thinking a bit ago it occured to me that Half Life is basically Doom but with dimensional aliens instead of demons.
I know, I know. "omfg stfu u noob" but bare with me. In Doom there's a military facility working on top secret projects which include teleportation. In Half Life there is a military facility working on top secret projects involving energy and dimensional travel or something (it's been a while). In both games a gateway into a very bad place is opened by accident. In Doom it's a door to hell. In Half Life it's a portal to another dimension. Hostiles pour out and quickly overrun security and any garrison leaving only one person to face it all.
And then people make claims that Gordon is this well-developed character and that--bare with me again, I know--Master Chief is cliche or stereotypical or whatever claim they have. I don't see how since they're basically the same thing except with Master Chief you never see his face and with Gordon you never hear his voice. They're both designed to let the player put themselves in the place of the hero. Sort of.
I guess they're not huge complaints but in these sorts of discussions they become points I like to drive home.
Now. . with Counter Strike? The thing it does right is mods and weapon buying. Accurate portrayal of weapons. . however. . kind of fails (the cocking mechanism is on the top of the M4/M16, not the side!). Of course. . that's just for gun geeks like myself. Tactical and strategical, however, or issues that aren't minor.
I've run into lots of people that claim Counter-Strike is an excellent tactical game allowing for great teamwork. How? In most of the games I've played in there has rarely been anything remotely tactical mentioned by my peers. There's really no teamwork except when maybe five or less people are left. In the larger games people act like herds of sheep or schools of fish and go in the same directions almost always. And again, communication specifically related to winning the game is an uncommon event with exceptions of course. I'm sure clans try, but as much as we want to believe we can do it, in 20+ on 20+ games it's just really too hard for the common gamer to coordinate.
So when it comes to being a tactical game or squad-based game or whatever it really doesn't cut it. For that I'd go to Battlefield 2 or GRAW or Rainbow 6. Counterstrike, to me, is just a good clean shootemup game with pretty places to go do it.
Do people seriously claim that Gordon is a strong character? They must be incredibly stupid. He's not even a character at all. Master Chief, generic as he is, is still far more fleshed out than Gordon Freeman. But they did that so you would feel more like you are Gordon. I know it's cliched but it works, that's part of the reason why Half-Life is so immersive.
What people really like about the story of HL is not the premise (which is, as you say, Doom with aliens), nor the character. It's the details, most of which you won't pick up until several playthroughs. Also, the G-Man is an awesome and very original character.
