http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/167135/Survival_horror_market_too_small_for_Resident_Evil_says_Capcom_producer.php

I know this article is a few months old now but I only just found, Crapcom is claiming that the Survial Horror market is too small for Resident Evil, in other words, not profitable. They claimed that their games have to appeal to people around the world, i'm pretty sure people around the world like Surival Horror. I personally think that Crapcom put out is article because they can't disguise how bad Resident Evil 5 was.

No, they are right.

And for that reason, I'm asking Capcom to release smaller budget Surivial Horror RE games for the 3DS and/or Vita.

They can keep pumping big budget action games on consoles and PC, just make some good SH handheld games.

Resident Evil 2 sold almost as many copies as RE4-5 and it was on a single platform unlike 4-5 that were on multiple systems.

True but passive-like games don't have the appeal they once did when it comes to Westerners. People want instant gratification now a days. Explosions everywhere, action action action action. I wonder how well RE6 will be received in Japan.

Its untrue, they just know the potential for them to sell more units more quickly lies in action. I still think a Revelations style title would do well on consoles though.

Yet their best selling games were the first ones that focused the most on horror.

Capcom logic.

In all RE 4-5 were the most successful. Gamers voted with their wallets and proved them right. Even ORC did like 2 mil and that game was supposedly bad.

Sorry let me rephrase that. It sold nearly as many copies on the PS1 as RE4-5 sold on multiple systems (Capcom didn't provide sales data outside PS1 sales for the earlier games.)

Time has changed. There was once a generation of horror games, but nowadays it's all action. If horror game truly has a massive market, then games like Amnesia should have received astronomical commercial success, considering it's pretty much the only proper horror game we've had in the past 5 years.

Not true, its just that no one is willing to spend on a polished high quality survival horror because they are trying to imitate the competition.

And if people think that Survival Horror is dead, I seriously laugh at that. By denotation and connotation context, I mean zombies, survival horror, survival mystery...ect are at the highest that they have been in literally years and thats from a media standpoint.

Just look at Day Z for crying out loud, a very crappy poorly done survival horror game but its doing incredible well...Because its a fun SURVIVAL horror game and people want this. "Oh thats just one example, blahblah blah." Amnesia, Left 4 Dead, Dead Space (to some extent) have sold millions. Even Slender, the indie game that is turning heads is gaining a lot of hype. The fact that there's only been a handful of developers with the ability to make a polished Survival horror or anything horror in general baffles me. Again, its about imitating the competition thats doing incredible well rather than actually spending some sort of resources. There is a market for it, just Capcom thinks if they do Call of Duty +Gears of War+Zombies=RE5/6.

Yup, the big middle finger to the old school RE fans...

I've been playing RE since the first game came out and I'm fine with it. *shrugs* Just make the game good.

Now the game that is a big middle finger to the fans is the new DMC game coming out.

DMC is almost exactly like old DMC except it has an emo kid instead of Dante. In fact previews have been raving about the game thus far.

RE-5/6 are absolutely nothing like the past series. Capcom even acknowledges this yet somehow that is not a middle finger to the RE fans? I've been playing RE since the very first one in 1996 and Im all about evolving a series. I thought RE4 was fantastic in every way possible and it reached a solid compromises. They dont even bother with RE5 and seemingly, RE6.

30fps and sh*t combat. Yeah totally the same.

It been known that RE would be heading down in this direction ever since RE4. Hell even some of the game previous to it were pretty actiony. It kept the characters, stupid cheesy lines, and other things with the newest games at least. I only consider REmake, the outbreak games, and maybe RE0 to be really survival horror. and REmake was the only scary one either way.

and I said it's not a middle finger to me. Not speaking for all the fans out there.

and RE4 wasn't much of a compromise. It just had better atmosphere compared to 5. We can't really talk about RE6 yet but at least Leon campaign seem to be dark and "spooky".

I don't see it. >.>

I still don't like the slow combat that I've seen compared the other games and 30fps on consoles. :P

but I wasn't compared the two franchises together anyways.

Crapcom can go suck my left nut for all I care. They have no real proof survival horror games don't sell well specially for a franchise reknowned as Resident Evil. It's obvious all they want is teh CoD sales. Neither do I think survival horror should start going exclusive to handhelds all of a sudden. No, one can not be a immersed in a scary atomophere on that tiny small screen lacking visual intensity.

Most of the series ran in 30Fps so I dont understand why thats an issue all of a sudden. No one has pointed out on frame drops but plenty have said- Amazing platforming great animations, and other praise.

The only RE game with "cheesy" lines was the original, all the other series were not that cheesy but still convoluted for sure.

RE4 was a pretty good compromise, RE4 was far more atmospheric, far better pacing, actual nods to classic RE staples.

REmake is my favorite out of the series but if you played RE 1/2 back in 1996, 1998--most people found them to be plenty scary (myself included which says a lot). Hunters for the first time, Mr. X, the twisted Mayor scene... tons of really creepy stuff that would definitely fall under survival horror.

no they aren't if it was true then RE2 wouldn't have sold as much as it did on a single system as much as RE4 and 5 did on multiple systems, their point is that survival horror doesn't make them enough money too not reverse the damage they've done to the gameplay and story of the series by making them lame action games. and action bro gamers are much more willing to buy ondisc dlc, day one dlc like hats and clothing...etc

RE1 was my first game I've ever played and basically got me into gaming, I have to say Zombies haven't scared me at all since RE2 came out, they aren't scary at all now that I am older, hell Amnesia wasn't even scary and was basically stupid.

After working in the oilfields, cheap survival horror stuff just doesn't scare me anymore.

That's why RE games stopped being survival horror after 3. It was a good change because, at least their version of survival horror, had terrible gameplay.

I'm pretty sure every DMC game were 60fps unless my eyes are old. Been a staple of the franchise.

I say at least RE1 through RE3 was cheesy. So was 4 kinda with Leon one-liners. Though RE1 did take it to another level.

and that what I'm hoping they can hit with some of re6 campaigns at least. Good atmosphere and pacing. I don't expect it from Chris though >.>

Remake is probably my favorite too. and I played the games when I was pretty young but I never really got scared. It was creepy though but I thought RE4/5 had some stuff people would consider creepy. but on a pretty low scale.

I'm sure I don't have to say this but just in case...this is all my opinion. Just stating how I feel. Respond or ignore it how you will. :P

Actually a lot people that played games in the 90s are gone. I just started again last December after about a 10 year break. Most of my friends that played games back then do not play them any more. It is a different market.

How does Capcom knows that though. The last horror game they made was in 1999.

My guess is that making a horror game is much more difficult than making a thrid person shooter where stuff blows up everywhere and they can't be bothered or know how to pull it off.

Well they are not very good at making third person shooters either, if they wanted to make Resident Evil 5 an action game, they could have at least made it play like one, instead it plays like a horror game with no horror.

Yet their best selling games were the first ones that focused the most on horror.

Capcom logic.

Maybe if these games didn't cost 200+ million to make, they actually COULD turn a profit. But no, instead of trying to minimize the cost of development, what happens? They strip and dumb down their games to action fests. Gaming has become too big for its own good. Of course if you're spending as much as many countries GNP on the development on a SINGLE GAME and need to sell a bajillion copies to recoup costs, what the hell should we expect? That's what these companies need to focus on: cutting down development cost in every way possible. Perhaps then they would be profitable and they wouldn't take the lazy way out and create their software for the LCD.

I thought Revelations was the best RE game since 0 and Remake. Probably one of the best games i have played in many years as well.

I fail to see the logic in "action sells games". You never hear anyone saying "you should play the new Resident Evil, It's very action heavy". Wouldn't making the game as scary as possible not sell more copies ? If Capcom made the game really scary then people would start talking about how scary it was and that would intrigue others.

games like resident 3ds and amesia can get away with cause they have smaller budgets and less or very few resctrictions. it cant be same for consoles with many its restrictions and high budgets. and its possible that (some) developers are not interesting in next gen because the budgets with higher. so they go with the cod actiony route so they can make profits from the games they made because it is quick and easy. of course they kill their original fanbase. an alternative route(like what i think shadowdeathx is thinking of) is to make games for psn/xbox live acade. that way they can make a horror game and still make a profit(not sure why some devs dont this). but i think there are still some restrictions. tim schefer from double fine did said that they have to give microsoft/sony money to patch their games. so its obvious that microsoft and sony are the enemy and why some people here believe consoles should die(or change their ways).

of course i might get resident evil 6 if its for fun for me. i even got some attacking me saying i was interested in the game when the trailer was shown. well tbh, i like the idea of 4 campaigns(5 if the last one isnt dlc) and different play throughs. and hoping that each campaign is like 7 hours(or more long).

RageQuitter69

Resident Evil Operation Raccoon City is garbage i.e. rail shooter with restricted movements in certain parts.

[QUOTE="timmy00"]

[QUOTE="mexicangordo"] DMC is almost exactly like old DMC except it has an emo kid instead of Dante.

They dont even bother with RE5 and seemingly, RE6.

mexicangordo

Source? Actually, all DMC run at 60FPS.

http://www.cheatsguru.com/ps2/devil_may_cry/walkthrough/2148616.htm

Also, platforming + great animation means nothing when it comes to gameplay (which is pretty sh!tty thus far).

About RE, RE4 was excellent, yes. Will this RE6 be better? Nope, probably not.

Except they weren't.

Going by single system sales when the industry was much smaller, they were.
