isn't that what different franchises are for? getting into different markets?

why would you halfway change the genre of a loved franchise into some sort of frankenstein-gone-wrong when you could just have 2 different franchises, one action, one horror.. there's clearly a market for both, and that way, the games would actually be good in their own right

There's no place in the market for mediocre shooters Crapcom has been pushing out either.

GhoX

Sales clearly disagreed. In this day and age, a mediocre shooter earns you more money than a good horror game.

If you have a Capcom stock portfolio, maybe. I just play video games.

Because of RE5 they can't make a pure horror one for fear of not selling. RE5 sullied the name. Amnesia A machine for pigs will release next year and I bet it will do very well sales wise, capcom just need to lower their budget a bit

True but passive-like games don't have the appeal they once did when it comes to Westerners. People want instant gratification now a days. Explosions everywhere, action action action action. I wonder how well RE6 will be received in Japan.

Then make new IPs that interest that market. Every game doesn't have to appeal to Joe Gamer to be succesful, and a real RE would be a hit with those that like the genre. Now, that market is smaller than the action set piece market perhaps, but the end result of taking an excellent Survival Horror IP and turning it into a rather generic action game makes nobody happy. See RE5.

They are entirely correct, the survival horror market is limited to people who don't mind getting scared every once in a while, not to mention almost the entire demographic under the age of 14 is unlikely to get into this genre...

I'm part of a market that's too small for Crapcom, so I'll just stop buying their games.

if you release a great game, no matter the genre it will sell, they came to people with this crap called resident evil 5, were surprised that didn't sell and now they blame the genre instead of they making a bad game and realizing why it was bad in the first place.

let's take amnesia, it had good sells, and it is regarded as one of the best scary games this gen, and it was an indie game, imagine if it had a big budget. If you make an uninteresting game with identity crisis like resident evil 5 it will not sell good, cod with zombies will not sell.

I thought the old Resi games sold quite well in their times.

And it's not like every game has to have multi-million sales to turn a profit.

For instance, I doubt a Resi 2 remake with updated graphics would cost terribly much to make.

And thats what is wrong with gaming nowadays. I mean, I like action games, but RE4/5 and CoD are NOT the action games I prefer, when it comes to all out pure action, games like Serious Sam, Doom, and Quake are the ones I would rather play. Most games today simply cannot match the quality and awesomeness of games of the past.

And that makes it ok? You people are just apt to accept the BS tha crapcom throws you. I wont and plan to boycott all future re games until it's back to the roots. I am tired of this "Action, instant gratification, bro gameer, crap that started this gen!!! , it's ridiculous!!

Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out! I will enjoy RE6 and future installments.

Enjoy your piece of garbage game. It's gamers like you that will lead the industry into another crash.

Yup, the big middle finger to the old school RE fans...

Ballroompirate

RE1 was my first game I've ever played and basically got me into gaming, I have to say Zombies haven't scared me at all since RE2 came out, they aren't scary at all now that I am older, hell Amnesia wasn't even scary and was basically stupid.

After working in the oilfields, cheap survival horror stuff just doesn't scare me anymore.

You are clearly one of those simple minded people who only likes mindless action "bro" games, and nothing else. I like games that have actually had THOUGHT and care put into them, not dumb cash cows like CoD, and clones that almost every game today had become.

I'm afraid this is why Dead Space goes more action than horror. The majority casual crowd simply likes action, they like shooting the crap out of others. Thats why CoD is popular in the first place.

Its a pretty sad view, horror games are already heavily declining. Major develoeprs and publishers never made a horror game, it all goes to indy developers.

The problem with games today is that the budgets are so big, if it doesn't sell Call of Duty numbers it's seen as a flop. And somehow, Amnesia managed to be released for a itty bitty budget and managed to be profitable, even though it's one of the most unfriendly games you will ever play.

Agreed. Developers/publishers have it in there mind that if there game doesn't sell atleast 100 million copies in one day, it flopped hard. And the sheer number of casual gamers is ruining the industry. Make games with lower budgets, and your good, it IS possible to make great games with tiny budgets!

I don't know why it's so hard to understand; The bigger the franchise the more expensive it is to make. This creates the need to have a larger audience. The original RE costs a fraction of a fraction of what a new RE game costs to make. Therefore the more action oriented approach. I doubt if they be so successful nowadays with horrible tank controls and stupid tricks to create "atmosphere" and tension.

Of course they totally missed the point and turned the game into a shooter instead of improving the things that made the game popular. I rather liked RE5 I thought it was a really fun coop game.

So Resident Evil is now just a shooter with new and evolving monsters/zombies? Soon to be badly rebooted.

I don't really care as long as Capcom can get back to the atmosphere of either a RE 4 or RE1 remake with the pacing of either. I think Capcom should just start up a new IP entirely and let RE just f*cking die already. Make a successor to the series that isn't tied to the name Resident Evil.

Time has changed. There was once a generation of horror games, but nowadays it's all action. If horror game truly has a massive market, then games like Amnesia should have received astronomical commercial success, considering it's pretty much the only proper horror game we've had in the past 5 years.

I guess you're right. F*ck people and their limited taste!

Its even more rude that they are asking permission if they should remake RE2? Are you serious Capcom? YES.  DUH We would love you to do that!

Why didn't they ask before making Guitar Hero: Operation Raccoon City.

They were on a roll when they were teaming with nintendo, why didn't they just continue remaking. RE2 and 3 could of been made into 1 amazing game.

Then 360 and PS3 came out.... aka the worst generation of gaming since before NES.

Capcom used to be one of my favorite developers and publishers. Now they have pulled a Square Enix and have gone to complete crap pretty much. RE4 was a great game, but RE5 and RE6 were terrible.

RE1 and 2 and 3 were OK from what I remember on the PS1... it had a more adventure/survival feel where the combat much like silent hill was clunky and you could get hurt easy and it was generally scary. I played one of the more recent ones RE5 I think, all the atmosphere is gone, and it's now turned into a shooter co-op game in Afrika during the day... oooh scary. Complete with kicking down doors and jumping through Windows. I prefer the limitations of the old games as it felt more claustrophobic and atmospheric and adventurous. Although I stopped playing it fairly quickly. Just kill it.

RE4 was great, not very scary but it had a strong sense of progression and was fun. Many ways to play the game. Upgrading your guns was fun, but optional. Great game.

Capcom already killed it by making RE5 and 6. And they will continue to hide behind a old name in order to sell their bad knock-off action games.

They really should of just created a new IP after RE4, that would of been the smart move (remember Devil May Cry? Yeah, that started out as RE4)

They are on auto pilot. It feels like RE is just a retirement plan for lazy devs who prey on the wallets on people who don't know any better.

The survival horror fanbase will b!tch and moan and cry like it always does, but it isn't big enough to justify AAA development in this day and age.

Until they turned it into an action game, at which point most of the people who liked RE said "Hey, over-the-shoulder aiming is really cool. Fvck the old Resident Evils, I want more of this."

Suddenly, Gears.

Look at RE6. It's become more and more Gears. Yeah its not Gears, because Gears is fun.

Capcom is only following and not innovating. They are intimidated by whats selling. Gears, Uncharted, Call of Duty.

edit btw how funny and bad is the sprint animation in RE6. It's terrible! Looks so cheesy.
