@Pedro:

Yeah it's amazing how CD Projekt Red was so full of shit.

But anyways, you're right that some games can be easily be made on both systems and all they have to do is downgrade the graphics on older hardware. But sometimes you have games that have certain gameplay and features, and putting them on older systems might be difficult since it could effect them.

Like for example Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a PS5 exclusive because the SSD allows the game to easily hop to different dimensions in the game very quickly. I'm guessing that if they tried that feature in the PS4, it will probably end up being very terrible and could effect the entire gameplay.

Hopefully there won't be any special gameplay features for the next God Of War or any other Sony games in the future where they have to change it in order to make it work on the PS4. If it goes well then I will be fine with some games being cross gen.

I don't know the extend of the dimension hoping when it comes to the gameplay. But if it is used in the same manner as Titanfall 2 and Dishonored 2, then such a feature is not outside the scope of last gen hardware. This is if it is being used in the same manner. We will find out next week.

I don't think devs will use the extra power in any interesting ways to differentiate games from the previous gen ... 99% of the time anyways.

How this an issue in any way given the current market. The more platforms, or in this case both previous and next Gen platforms, is a good thing, as more people can enjoy the games.

Developers have been doing this for years where they scale a game across many potential systems. This is a similar case. It's even easier than scaling on PC since they know the exact strength of each system. I do agree that last Gen consoles have awful Cpus, but developers have gotten around that issue kind of.

Lastly, the next Gen consoles are still difficult for most people to get, the supply is really low and it has gotten even worse from what I have noticed in path month. The install base is simply not there to make it worthwhile to make a game exclusive to a next Gen system, especially since thag exclusivity can not drive sales (due to shortage).

@killerpainrulez: Developing games is not free, it takes a lot of manpower and resources to make it. Why would they release it only on a PS5 that has a) negligible install base; b)shortages ensuring that the install base can not currently grow effectively (unlike before when consoles are easy to get, exclusives would drive consoles sales, that simply can not happen in todays climate due to the shortages).

At the end of the day, these are companies and they need to make money, or at a minimum recoup their investments in whatever game they make. Childish view to think they should just make things (or do things) just to keep some fanboys happy lmao

You know, these kind of debates and the marketing bullshit behind them are just part of why console gaming is frustrating. You get people yammering on about "true next gen" titles in dark corners of the web like this instead of whether the games are actually creative and fun, corps lying to them in marketing to give the illusion that that is what they are getting if they BUY BUY NOW!!!, and then consumers being annoyed that others get to enjoy the game that they do on different hardware when the exclusivity or cross generational support lines they were fed turned out to be lies.

Hardware wars get in the way of us supporting each other and simply enjoying good software

✌

It's sort of like when I first saw Bluray on my big new HD TV, I could see the threads and individual hairs, wow. Fast forward ten years and I watch most of my movies on an ipad in my bed, or a 4K tv across the room, I really don't care anymore. As for the gaming, last gen games just looked great, then you uprez them for the new systems and I have to ask myself: what is next gen?

In other transitions, the jump was immediately visible, today, not so much.

Lol as cows have learned you don't get any FPS boost from an SSD during typical game play. Was thinking more the 1.8GHz CPU was the problem... SSD would have been nice tho in terms of loading times and snappy menus. You can scale down gfx processing a lot easier than you can CPU. So here we are 8 years later and devs are having trouble running modern games (created on systems with beefy CPUs) on the PS4. 8 years ago a typical desktop CPU was still 3+ GHz.

It would have cost us maybe $100 more last gen, most games wouldn't have performed like ass on consoles the last 7 years, and cross-gen wouldn't be an issue right now.

also a dam gen 2 or 3 controller. idk both console used a gen 1 sata controller till refresh of console.

Yeah I put an SSD in my PS4, it was a bit better. As stated tho, the PCIe Gen 2 controller on the PS4 was a big bottleneck that prevents the SSD from being as much of an upgrade as it should be.

If you have nothing else but a gaming console, waiting this long is the most boring option around. If this gen lasts 5 years like Sony suggested, that's almost half of the genetion being waited without buying the console. Not only do you miss out on the likes of Demon's remake, Returnal, etc, but you're still stuck with the previous console that you're the owner of off for seven plus years. How messedup is that? This kind of wait is for the people that don't play video games much or own a gaming rig.

And lets not forget that if you're still waiting those two years, you will be playing everything that comes out in sub 30fps, and in many occasions sub 20fps instead of 60fps. You gotta be insane to accept this kind of performance.

hell first few models of ps4 had gen 1 sata. the refresh thinner model had 2 .

ps 4 pro and xbox elite(wth ed one) had gen 3 also. but it also seems gen 3 controller perform worst then what on a pc. which is the odd part.

@mtron32: I've always really enjoyed the aspect of PC gaming where the focus is squarely on whether games are fun for my tastes or not. Like, in terms of visuals it's always a continuum because you can basically play any game from any era (as long as it runs of course - like, you aren't trying to play CP2077 on an ancient 7600 GS or something). New games come out and yeah - USUALLY they look better, sometimes a lot, but not always. Because so much of how a game looks and runs is given to you to decide (when you want to upgrade, what you want to upgrade to, mods, screen resolution, your preference for framerate vs pixels, etc), it totally disincentivizes ideas like getting pissed someone with an older piece of hardware or one from another brand can play a game you enjoy.

Could you imagine if people with RTX3000 cards were mad the new games still work on RTX2000 cards? It's just a different world. I have always liked consoles and I own a big stack of them - but it's definitely a big part of the rocky transition every time I turn my attention towards a game or debates surrounding a game on consoles. That and trying to swap all the cables and stuff to plug in an old one to play a game I like ;-)

yeah i don't want that pc-like universal compatibility for consoles.

forward compatible for old first party games on newer consoles, not backward compatible for new first party games on older consoles, please.

anyone who's played rdr2 or tlou2 and seen the console pushed to its limits knows deep down playing ragnorak on a ps4 in 2022 is good for no one

I think devs are smart enough to scale games accordingly. After all they've been doing it on the PC for decades.

Has nothing to do how smart or not smart devs are. Old hardware is old hardware and devs have to consider resources, which will eventually put restrains on new hardware.

Sony did basically lie/miss lead has the marketing last June made it seem like spiderman miles Morales, GOW ragnarok, GT7, Horizon forbidden west where going to all be ps5 only for all 4 to be on ps4 to. It is kind of a bummer has it will hold things back some how ever Forbidden west clearly looks better then any games from last gen and at least Sony is still giving good games where everything worth playing on Xbox sx you can already play on ps5 or ps4. Switch to has given a good amount of games to like sony and vote 2 will be amazing.

2 teams working on the different versions slightly weakens the blow to ps5 owners but it will obviously effect the scale of the game.

Pretty sure there have been many issues of games being held back because of older hardware. This isn't some "held back" conspiracy. This has been happening for a while now.

Well, if there are that many issues with games being held back you should be able to provide ample amount evidence to this claim.

here is one ratchet and clank when making there game for the first time ever the team didn't have limit with the enemy design. which is good. How many games suffer from the same enemy but with a different color scheme?

All so level design. if its cross gen game expect a slow walking scene on both versions or a long corridor.

graphically last gen not holding any one back. they just add around the last gen version. say global illumination or raytracing just be added to the next gen version. or more assets ect. ps4 version will just have last gen lighting affects ect.

most next gen games are going to be made from the same engine that made ps4 games just with more features added.

There are always limits when designing any game. Claiming anything to the contrary is nonsense. With that said, limited enemy variety has nothing to do with system hardware especially with modern hardware. It is simply easier to do.

As you and many others have been educated on this, open world games exist. These open world games don't have long corridors. If a developer is relying on long corridors then they are not managing their assets for seamless gaming and are simply dumping full levels instead of incrementally loading and offloading. That is understandable because a system like that requires work.

Global illumination is a not a next gen feature. Real time global illumination is also not a next gen feature. What next gen brings graphically is ray tracing. If you are on the Xbox Series X|S, you have next gen features such as VRS, Mesh Shaders and Sampler Feedback. VRS is present in Gears Tactics and Gears 5. All that those other features are missing in action. None of those features are game changing. But, they will improve performance.

I love it! I gambled this gen to wait it out because the facts prove time and time again that early adopters wait.... And wait.... And are increasingly devalued every gen.

Yeah, a huge difference when you only work on PS5 without setbacks, I was mighty impressed by how it looks/plays like a next-gen console. Still, cross-gen doesn't necessarily concern me as I'm not a console gamer by heart, just a PC gamer, and its clearly not everyone is ready to jump on PS5 when PS4 still offers more for gamers.

I admit I don't play much but that's more to do with modern games don't impress me like the NES-PS2 era did.

"And lets not forget that if you're still waiting those two years, you will be playing everything that comes out in sub 30fps, and in many occasions sub 20fps instead of 60fps. You gotta be insane to accept this kind of performance."

It's more insane paying $400-$500 for minor diffrences. It's more insane PS5(or Series owners)paying $70 for basically PS4/Xone games.

Who said that they will be available in 2 years? It has been 6 years since Bloodborne came out, and still nowhere near coming to PC. Assuming that its coming in 2 years is just dreaming.

60fps vs 20-30fps is a massive difference on its own, then there's a cleaner picture and exclusives not available on other systems.

I think you missed my point or I apologize if I didn't phrase my point right. But my point was, if I get a PS5 2 years later from launch, won't Returnal and Demon Souls still be available.

Is it worth a $470-$570 difference?

Why are lems so concerned about Sony making money, when halo inf looks like an Xbox 360 game. Shouldn’t they be asking ms to drop the Xbox 360 support for the game ?

every generation people still made games for the previous platform for acouple more years, but they got different games usually and now they're sharing the same crappy game which is x10 worse.

whole video game industry sucks these days js.

@killerpainrulez: I can only remember that being true from games straddling the 8-bit to 16-bit era, and maybe a few select titles from 16-32. The 3D polygonal game largely killed that practice.

We tend to look at a very narrow slice of gaming history (seems like the 16 bit era most often) and use that for broad "back in the day" statements

@killerpainrulez: those are completely different games on drastically different systems/architectures... I see no point in discussing those... there is no reason for a company to do that with semi unified platforms like the PS4 and PS5. That's like you complaining something like MH Rise and MH World dont exist - except they do. Weaker and weirder hardware does get games catered to it still.

I thought you were referring to games of the same name getting kind "bizarro" reimaginings on the new vs older platform.

doesnt matter if ps4/ps5 are both x86, ps4 is severly gimping ps5 versions, just like it motorstorm woulda been gimped on ps3 if they didnt develop different game for each platform.

@killerpainrulez: proof that is happening? "Severely gimped" really?

And just so we are clear: you think that instead of Guerrilla making the single best HZD2 they can with their time and resources they should instead make a totally different HZD2 Forbidden Southeast for PS4 in parallel - even though the PS4 is perfectly capable of running a scaled back version of HZD2?

I'm still pissed about this funny enough this old ass 2012 PC demo still looks better then Legion minus the ray tracing.

I'm pissed that Ubisoft pulled this on several occasions.

But I think Watch Dogs still holds up, just like AC: Unity, all it really needs is some lighting tweaks and bam, it holds up today.
