Crysis 2 feels generic. And no, I don't blame consoles for this.

After watching a few of the new Crysis 2 trailers, I don't feel quite as hyped for this game anymore. It looks more and more like another one of those generic, linear, urban shooters with aliens and not much of a soul.

Granted, the first Crysis was average at best. If my memory serves me correctly, much of Crytek's promised features never made it into the end product. They promised that we would be able to fight alongside the Koreans against the aliens and be able to gain their trust. They also promised open levels in which the next level's starting location would be different, depending on where you exited the previous one. And there were so many other "cool" features that never made it onto the disk that I can't remember.

Additionally, I don't blame console development for this at all - I believe that Crytek became cocky and arrogant during the development of the original Crysis, recognized their mistakes, and are now trying to deliver on a product where none of their promises will ring hollow anymore - a souped-up, graphically appealing shooter with no soul whatsoever.

For Crytek, it is all about graphical fidelity, not gameplay.

For these reasons, I am waiting until Crysis 2 hits the bargain bin next year.

I've always wanted to do this. 9.5 ktnx by Edit: Since I'm not a complete troll, I should clarify. Exaggeration and not adding "IMHO" is just asinine. Besides, whining about things they promised years before launch is just weak.

I agree. I was skeptical when I saw the first footage. There was nothing in the video that had a wow factor. Graphics are good but not as good fanboys claim to be. Bulletstorm on the other hand and looks far better.

Well i agree it was average and many things were not as good as promised. As for crysis 2? Well it looks like a decent game, i dont know about you but i really like the new york level design and the whole story despite being in small corridors or big level and despite generic gameplay. It is true that it does not look unique anymore but i have to admit from the recent E3 video i think the FPS gameplay is done much better than the first and the game has more emphasis into FPS combat and less on the nanosuit. But i will agree with you that crytek is being too much of a sayer latelly and less of a prover. For example they talked about amazing ai and using the nanosuit in crysis 2 and all they showed us, was a generic gunfight with a couple of mechs without even using the suit.

Destructible environments + fast, smart, and powerful A.I.. + large maps + sandbox game play + insane verticality + customizable weapons + customizable nanosuit + combining suit powers+ dynamic ToD, etc. = about as far from generic as you can get. Then again, this is coming from someone who loved the C1/Warhead (for the gameplay).

Sandbox gameplay? Did you not watch the E3 footage? It was packed with scripted events. Great graphics but gameplay looks boring and repetitive. I really wish Crytek would just build engines and let someone else handle the games. At least hire someone else to do the story.

The Good

  • Dynamic, emergent shooter gameplay
  • Unparalleled visuals with destructible environments
  • High level of replayability
  • Power struggle makes for huge multiplayer battles
  • An amazing accomplishment overall.

So, I guess in their attempt to make the prettiest shooter ever, they accidentally made one of the best shooters ever in every aspect.

I remember they promised better AI in Crysis, too. One of the old trailers called the enemy "cunning". The Koreans were pretty dumb for the most part. The aliens just floated there with little sense of cohesion at all.

Sandbox gameplay? Really? Each level in Crysis (more so in Warhead) were big wide corridors with only two, maybe three options with which you could proceed. They weren't as open as promised. In Warhead, the game grew even more linear.

Combined suit powers does sound nice, however.

Um, did you? C2 is even more "sandboxy" than the first. Yerli even started the demo with "this is just one way how to do it" or something along those lines.

1. The A.I. was pretty good for the most part 2. Crytek fixed most of the A.I. problems in Warhead 3. I've replayed my favorite firefights countless times and no two playthroughs were the same. Your thinking that there were only two or 3 options means you were only able to find 2 or 3. 4. Warhead was an expansion, not a sequel.

How so? Because there is more than one way to take out the mech? Tons of shooters are like that. Use the bazooka or the explosives, whoopdy-doo. Hardly evidence of it being a sandbox game.

Anyways it's already been confirmed that the levels are smaller:

Well, I can't say that I was happy with the gameplay they showed. The controller had as much sensibility as WWII tank, and probably the guy that played was mentally retarded. The only thing we can really complain is that Crytek is failing not to make the game, but to *show* it how it really is. I do agree though that if they show even more footage and nothing changes, then we can suspect that something smells fishy. Right now, as I stated before, I am confused about what the game really is.

With that in mind, how many games weren't 'generic' at all showcases? If you pick all FPS they've shown, it all looked terribly generic; the new CoD was as generic as it gets. The games that weren't generic were all Nintendo or motion control and probably MGS: Rising.

Okay, overuse of the word "generic" should be an offense punishable by moderation. How about we all take a trip to thesaurus.com and find new ways to express our feelings? Btw, what exactly is your definition of "generic"? Each shooter shown had things about them that made them unique from other shooters. I'm starting to think System Warriors just like to bash things just for the sake of bashing them.

[QUOTE="windsquid9000"] Again, you can make any game sound "generic" if you describe it like that.

windsquid9000

Not all shooters are generic, just have a look at the video preview for Xcom.

You mean Bioshock out of Rapture?

Because XCOM takes place in the 50's? The time is the same but the enemy and setting is clearly not. XCOM will also have an original story, not 'you've got to shoot those aliens dude!' along with some big explosions. Crytek games are like summer action movies. Yea that effects are neat but...would it kill them to have an intriguing story? How bout some original characters instead of super-soldier awesome dude and his totally awesome solder friends.

I get the impression the industry is creatively bankrupt to a fairly sizeable degree. All these shooters seem to blend together and I find it difficult to care.

The one I think has stood out the most so far was Bulletstorm thanks to the demonstration being actually funny, which is a rare feat to accomplish. Very crass, stupid humor, but it works for me.

Exactly my point. A quick look at the surface may make it seem "generic," but when you dig a little deeper, you see what sets the game apart from the others.

I nominate "hackneyed."

The_Capitalist

I remember they promised better AI in Crysis, too. One of the old trailers called the enemy "cunning". The Koreans were pretty dumb for the most part. The aliens just floated there with little sense of cohesion at all.

Sandbox gameplay? Really? Each level in Crysis (more so in Warhead) were big wide corridors with only two, maybe three options with which you could proceed. They weren't as open as promised. In Warhead, the game grew even more linear.

Combined suit powers does sound nice, however.

Quoted for true, the ai was a mess and the game levels were not as big as they hype them to be. The first level in warhead wa big, but yet again linear with an objective that triggers the next level loading and you couldnt have fun messing around.

I'm not really a FPS player but I feel that the Crysis series seem a lot less generic than many other games in the genre. There seems to be a lot more going on in the game than many other first person shooters; from what I saw in the E3 demo anyway. I don't really have that much knowledge on the genre though so I guess my opinion isn't that objective.

From what I've seen so far I'm not that impress. I want it to be like Crysis 1 again where it is full blown open enviroment. I'm still keeping an eye on this seeing as I've only seen a small part of the campaign.

well crysis was always about the look ......as a game it always sucked

Medic_B

You're going to have to explain that one. The gamelay in the first Crysis was far from being bad.

Crytek has already stated that there will be maps as large as Crysis 1's.

Granted, the first Crysis was average at best.

The_Capitalist
Prove it. Average shooters don't get 9.5 and Shooter GOTY. Otherwise I am inclined to agree that Crysis 2 looks underwhelming in general. I'd like to see more sandbox gameplay, but all I see is in game renders of shooting.
