[QUOTE="Zeliard9"][QUOTE="steve17989"]I don't get the hate for linear shooters. Linear shooters have many pro's over sandbox shooters and vice versa. It's the devs choice to help get the feel of the game right, can you imagine what a sandbox Half life would be like? Not very nice.steve17989
I can easily imagine what Half-Life with less linear gameplay and more free-roaming would be like, because I played it: the last section of Episode 2. And it's very, very nice.
Ah yes, forget about that bit. Either way, I'm just saying being linear doesn't mean a worse game, like most poster seem to be getting at.
I was personally saying that Crysis could influence shooters to veer away from the corridor-type with linear gameplay, but I wasn't trying to diss them. One of the games I'm most looking forward to is F.E.A.R.'s sequel, Project Origin. And F.E.A.R. is one of my favorite shooters. Those types of linear shooters are perfectly fine, and excellent for what they are.
I think games like Half-Life could do more, though. The last part of Episode 2 is the best bit of any Half-Life I've played, so I hope to see that Episode 3 is similar in design. I've always thought that Half-Life was held back by its relatively archaic gameplay, especially Half-Life 2, which didn't really change too much from Half-Life 1 in the gameplay dept except for adding the gravity gun. And it's especially noticeable since basically everything else about the HL series is at such a very high level.
