Some people are so stupid. When DVD's were introduced people said its not needed and the space wont be used. Look at where we are now. The space is being use, and games are taking more than 1 dvds. Yes 50 gigs is not going to be used soon(unless MGS4 does actually need 50gbs), but its future proof. A few years from now blu ray is going to be needed and you people who say it isnt are going to say how dumb you were for saying it isnt needed.

Look at how massive crysis is and how beautiful it looks and plays and its just on a standard DVD9. If something as amazing as crysis can be made on a DVD/cd rom whatever kind of disc its on, then thats proof why blu ray is not neededAhammer80

Imagine if it was on blu-ray! That'd be pretty cool.

im sorry but your still a noob, pc dont need discs, get a crack you will see theres no such thing as a "Play disk" its just installation disk.

Grive

Just that... and you call ME a noob? I sometimes purchase more than that on a single game shopping spree.

So, your claim is that because you can *crack* a game and ALTER THE GAME'S FUNCIONALITY, there is no Play disk? Did you know that not all games need full installs?

Or are you so wrapped up in trying to claim some pathetic ownage you're unable to see that many a PC game, in it's main, basic form, uses a PLAY DISK?

So sad...

Its you that are sad and ignorant...

The Disk in the drive does nothing but tells the .exe of the game that it exists and thatthe owner has bought the game...

It has NO practical function in running the game its antipiracy 100%...The only thing that the NO CD cracks do is to alter the code of the exe to not ask for a CD the game works as usual...

Hell there are even image files that you mount on an NON existant virtual drive and emulate so the game thinks that there is a disk in the drive...

And do you know how big are these image files? 10mb at max...

Your PC is still accessing info from the disk image via the virtual drive that it's mounted to.  Heh . . . mounted.

Until we reach a threshold where developers are no longer able to make convenient use of DVD9 to put their games on, Blu-Ray is not needed. That time is not now, and we don't know when it will be - all I notice is that the 360 continues getting plenty of developer support. Once the 360 starts losing exclusives because developers feel that DVD9 cannot get the job done, then we have come to that point.  Until then, anything and everything said about the matter is pure conjecture. Lossless compression algorithims continue to improve making games on DVD9 still possible.

PC games are different to consoles games, data can be stored on the large HDDs.

Though I don't necessarily disagree with your point, the evidence you use to get their is faulty.

Danm_999

How are you going to transport the data to the HDD without downloading it?

Oh yeah CD's and DVD's. :|

And how many DVDs is Crysis on? Probably 2, an install disk and a play disk.

Thats so true!! To add to ur point Far cry was on 5 disc's!!!

Look, I'm not saying Blu-ray is needed. I'm just saying citing PC games as evidence is wrong, because they work fundamentally differently to consoles in how they store data. Compressed data is installed onto the hard drive during installation, so it's really not the same ball game.

When You get a PC monitor with much higher resolutions than 1920x1080 you will see why it isn't needed and DVD 9 will be just fine.

I know, this is more proof Blu-ray is unnecessary for gaming and even its' benefit to movies is not that impressive. The only good thing about blu-ray is that developers have been using the huge storage space to duplicate data in order to keep loading times from being so slow due to blu-ray's inherently slow speed.

So, there is a "Play Disc" on PC games?

Good, I was right, you were wrong. End of discussion. I never said the disc was absolutely necessary to keep the data.. just that there IS a Play disc. Call it install disk #n (since that's its function in multi-disc games) if it makes you feel better with yourself.

Under your argument, there are no play discs on consoles either, since if you crack them, you can save the whole game to the hard drive ever since the original Xbox.

Not to mention, not EVERY game makes a full install into the Hard Drive - and some don't even offer the option.

Pff, look at like 10 standard DVD9 discs. That seams a lot more reasonable.

If it was a demo. Demo are usually smaller than the full game. Cause the full game includes all the maps, story, cut-scene, audio, more foes, more npc, more of everything. So we will have to wait and see if the full crysis game fit on a dvd. My bet is any game can fit on a dvd but how many missions. 4-8. I want a lot if the story is good.

You're so smart can I be your friend. (notice sarcasm) Anyone who think bigger game storage is not needed should go back and play Pong on floppy disks. Then come back and tell me if bigger storage mediums are needed. You know some idiot just like this guy once said the same thing when Pong came out on Floppy disk. "Ooooh look how cool the ball bounces back and forth and how detailed the dot is and the paddle, we will never need anything other than Floppy disks for games" Flash forward to today where's the Floppy disk and where's Pong.

Technology moves forward live with it.

BECAUSE PC GAMES RUN FROM A DISK RITE?

Why do people on this forum know NOTHING ABOUT PCs.  This is almost as bad as the time when somebody said that PCs don't display in HD.

Sure you CAN, but that's not the standard, and that's certainly not how you'll install Crysis on your PC.  Don't try to nickel-and-dime me with your technicalities, this is a retarded thread.  Not that I think blu-ray is the way of the future anything, or that DVD9 is outdated, but this thread really doesn't help support that DVD9 can still be the standard for video games since on PC it is a COMPLETELY different ballgame.

I believe blu-ray is not necessary, but Crysis will more likely be on multiple (5-6?) DVDs, as most new PC games. And these games are stored on the hard drive, its very different

I was just pointing out that PCs can stream games from discs. Don't know where this hostitlity is coming from. BESIDES, people totally forget that Dual Sided double layered dvds exist that hold up to 18 gigs of information and can be read on a 360. It may be more expensive, but they are just one of MANY examples as to why Blu Ray is not needed.

Of coarse blue ray is needed, it is progress, bigger is always better. Look at Mass Effect it already filled up the DVD9, and it is a second generation game. What if devs want to make an even bigger game. The only problem with blue-ray now is that it is slow, other than than it is very good. The more content the better.muscleserge

That's where multiple disc games come in. FF7-9 were multi disc as are many other great RPGs.

Blue Dragon is a JRPG with loads and loads of CGI (the most space consuming feature on a disk), something that few games share in common.

Well usually you have to put install discs on the PC in order to play the game.

And TC, I must say I see your point, but on PC's to run the game you just install it and then use the install disc to play the game so you dont swap between discs unlike consoles where multiple discs require a disc swap

Why does it matter how long it takes to install? :?explicthangnail
Clearly, you have no clue how it works. Let me end this silly "fact" once and for all. PC game data can fit on a DVD because they can be HIGHLY compressed -- which requires an installation to the HDD. The highly compressed data on the DVD CANNOT be streamed and decoded on the fly. Ever tried unzipping a 1GB ZIP file? It is simply a waste of processing power to be decoding data all the time. If developers decide to allocate processing power to decode heavily compressed files, obviously, it is at the expense of processing power. In other words, PC games can be compressed to fit onto a DVD because the files do not need to be streamed. And if developers use compressed files on consoles, it will impact the amount of processing power they can tap for actual gameplay elements.
