PC's and Consoles have lived in harmony now for a LONG ASS TIME, I don't really see that changing anytime soon. I don't know if its an equal share but a lot of people like to game on PC's and a lot like consoles. This war about one or the other dying is kind of stupid, really if anything, ipads, smart phones etc., will be the death of both if they can come up with better graphics and gameplay and more media uses for them which they seem to be doing year after year.

I'm keeping more of a watch on the mobile market and more casual games killing PC and consoles as opposed to PC vs consoles. Everyone seems so in love with mobile gaming (I don't know why I hate it) these days and more interested in gaming machines doubling as media devices, phones etc. I game on consoles, used to game on PC's but I think its too much hassle but I don't want to see core gaming die due to the crappy mobile market, which year after year seems to be gaining momentum. Crytek can have their opinion but, honestly I see mobile platforms beating both platforms in the not so distant future.

Like I said, no add ons. Any computer system can use ANY input if you threw in add-ons. The point I'm getting to is that many of the genres are based around PC controls, and most (but not all) transfer pretty well to consoles. Motion controls is the first real type of genre built from consoles. Wii U controller is a another. I'm not really a fan of these myself, but like RTS and such are for PCs, these type of controller games are for consoles. Its just a matter of one being the original source of inspiration for most of the game styles we play.lx_theo

I'm confused then because you questioned the unlimited-ness of a PC by commenting on motion controls, but they've been around on the PC since the 90s (in various shapes) as far as I can remember. The mouse itself is a motion controller too.

All console style games can be played on a PC, but not the other way around.

No, they can be played on the consoles. You can just as easily plug in a keyboard and mouse to a console as you can plug in motion controls. And no, the mouse isn't a motion controller anymore than an analogue stick is.

Contrary to the popular and everlasting prophecy that PC gaming is dying chronically, Crytek's CEO Cevat Yerli believes that console are the real dying breed.

?The console will displace the PC, you hear it again and again. On the contrary, I suspect that the next-generation of home consoles will be the last one,?Yerli told German siteGolem.

?Of course there are still hardcore gamers who sit for an hour to install and then play for eight hours. But these consumers are becoming the minority. Today's gamers buy a game for 99 cents, download it and play it for 15 to 20 minutes per day over a period of two months - and then they move on.?

Yerli also confirmed that Crytek already has a Wii U version of its famous CryEngine and that its licensees are already creating games for the upcoming Nintendo console. However, he affirmed that Crytek has no intention to develop any games for Wii U or PlayStation Vita.

?The Playstation Vita is currently too uncertain for us as a platform?he explained.?Technically, I find the Vita very appealing, and have fun with it - no question. From a business perspective it is a bit too late.?

Uhhhhh no. I know way too many people that have put 100+ hours into skyrim, Call of Duty, or some other console game. Hell I've put a lot of hours into crysis too! The reason why mobile games do so well is cuz many of them are a dollar but in all honesty most of them are just a waste of money. The only ipad/iphone games I've enjoyed were GTA 3 (for nostalgia reasons), Osmos, and Galaxy on Fire.

Next generation will probably last an incredibly long time, longer than this gen. They will be converted more and more to a full media hub that happen to play games.

The console future is the cloud.

PC will remain for enthusiasts, just like the Nvidia statement claimed.

What about diminishing returns? There will always be an audience for the big budget games and we will soon reach a point where graphics between different systems are not a big deal as they are today. Then after that? Mind control gaming, hologram and virtua reality. Thank goodness I will be resting in my grave then.

So true, even the PS3 and Xbox 360 cannot be considered as dedicated console anymore. With media streaming, blu-ray playback (this is for PS3 only), music player, movie and music downloads, they've become a home entertainment device to let everybody enjoy not to just gaming only...

Unless he knows something about the next generation that we don't, I call shenanigans. The only thing that would actually end consoles is if PC games somehow manage to offer an experience that is as convenient as playing on a console, and that will take a new product that seamlessly integrates the home PC with the living room. Unless some kind of hybrid between smart TVs and PCs ends up taking off (my mom bought a Sony Vaio recently that's basically a TV with a PC inside, but as far as I know those aren't really catching on as of yet, not to mention that upgrading one of those would be a mess), or someone comes out with a device that seamlessly streams game content from your PC to your TV's screen from across the house (I wrote a big post about this today), I do not see things changing.

The only way console gaming will die in the near future is if something revolutionizes the PC gaming scene (which PC gamers have been waiting for over a decade to happen), or if the console makers drop the ball in such a big way that PC and tablet gaming are the only things that survive. Until we see what exactly the PS4 and Xbox 720 are, I remain ever doubtful that that will happen. IMO, console gaming will only go away when the line between console and PC gets so blurry enough that have become the same thing (example: if Microsoft announces that its next Xbox will run windows software, or if Valve announced a console-like device that streams your PC's Steam games to your TV).

There will always be enough gamers to sustain traditional consoles. Just becuase the majority are playing 99 cent apps doesn't meant that the large group of gamers who buys the consoles and plays games are just going to disappear...

So we've gained a billion casual gamers, the hundred million core gamers are still around.

Eventually we'll have PC's (for the enthusiast as always) and on live type subscription models (for the non tech savvy) for gaming, with Valve, Activision and EA owning rival services.

I think he means along the lines of a dedicate device solely for games. I mean look at what they are becoming now, these companies want them to be the be all end all set top box for your living room. No more having multiple devices on 10 different inputs connected to your TV when one box will try and do it all. Obviously I don't see that happening anytime soon since that would require a lot of cooperation between all the different media groups out there.

I have a feeling that the "core" gamers will be a minority and soon be long forgoten but that won't be for awhile and most of us will probably grown or old as f*ck and not care anymore by time it happens haha.

Valve is actually making something similar. It's called Big Picture. You hook up your gaming PC to your TV and instead of booting to the desktop Windows will boot directly into a TV and controller friendly UI complete with in-game browsing, automatic driver updates (albeit slower than manual -- Steam already does this if you get well out of date), and in-game cross-game voice chat. Said features would also be compatible with non-Steam games, though you'd have to install those with a mouse and such via the normal Windows UI. It also doesn't solve the problem of multiplayer. If you were using a controller you'd always be a second-rate player in an FPS. I was sure it'd get shown this E3. I think maybe they're saving it and a long, windy speech about how closed platforms are bad for gaming for whenever the next console gen is formally announced, try to steal the show from MS and Sony.

PC gaming is less comfortable, I don't want it. I already spend too much time in front of a monitor at work, force me to play there and the industry will lose me.

I love how this is the same company who jumped ship from the PC platform with Crysis 2 after 'poor sales' of the original Crysis.

Wait...you mean the same guy who said crysis was not possible on consoles?

lol

casharmy

He said the PC version of Crysis wasnt possible on consoles. He was right too since in order to get the game to work at all on them they had to rework it into a dumbed down console version of their engine, cut out its largest level and multiplayer, have it stream the content in cells, cut back a lot of graphical fidelity and implement a gimped controller friendly UI and control system, ...and it still struggled to reach 25fps in most parts.

How can they make any money on free games? Can they make enough profits or should they make game engines like Epic.

The free to play market will more than likely crash after a while, people will get to money hungry. Then traditional games will say "pay for the game but you get EVERYTHING, no more buying jeans, no more buying hats, with this game you can make your own hat!!!" etc.

If anything is to be taken from points of view like this, which I think cloud gaming etc will be the future is that what we think will be cloud gaming etc will not be what we think it is. In terms of tablets I think they will become more like laptops in terms of you can attach things to them to play certain things etc. Also I think they will become alot more streamline instead of looking like a cluttered desktop :P.

I hear a lot of people linking the demise of consoles to the rise of mobile gaming and casual stuff like the wii. And while those markets have certainly exploded recently, It hasnt been at the expense of "hardcore" gamers. Maybe they play phone games while waiting for the bus, but when they want to get to it a phone isnt going to replace their main platform. While I would certainly like to see consoles as a "hardcore" platform die off in favor of PC gaming, I don't really know that it will happen for the reasons he is mentioning.

Good thing you can play PC games on your big screen from your couch just fine. My friend does it and has no problem.
