This is good news for everyone. There will always be that one PC game that pushes the bar in terms of visuals but knowing you can play 99.99999999999% of new games for so much time is a great thing! It's also one less argument consolities can use against the PC :)

Consoles holding back the industry is not good news :|
I'd prefer more scalable engines instead.
Games today are increasingly lowest common denominator limited, consoles are the lowest common denominator.
I expect console users will try to spin it into consoles being favoured over PC gaming, while that is the case it isn't for the reasons they will likely think they are. Being the lowest common denominator among targeted gaming hardware isn't exactly something you want to boast about.
How are they holding back the industry exactly?
Espada12
Well in what way are they pushing it forward?
Their fixed hardware is forcing a standard of graphics that has pushed game development costs beyond breaking point, tearing apart the traditional console operation models and forcing them to look for new ways to compete. This greater cost forced developers cross platform, which makes them have to accommodate the lowest common denominator hardware of each platform. This is pulling progress backwards, such as the case of Crysis losing its open environment game play to accommodate consoles memory limitations.
PC offers greater hardware but it doesn't have fixed hardware, it has no fixed standards, so in effect consoles are responsible for the current stake of the games industry.
I can't believe the LACK of RAGE from this news. No one is talking about it in the PC forums, no one is talking about it here. He just openly admitted that they are effected by consoles. Have Hermits lost faith in Crytek before this?NerkconWell what can i say many people loved far cry and didnt like crysis... does that count?
Nothing new really, every PC gamer knows that consoles do hold back game engine since most of them are designed with consoles in mind. Only game engines designed for PC's can push the limits of hardware currently available. Even crysis when it came out for PC's was a beast but now it's not anymore, mainstream GPU can play at high settings quite easily.
In September this year ATI will release next-gen GPU the 5000 series and they will walk all over crysis. I don't think there will be alot of games that will push the ATI 5000 series until next-gen consoles arrive. Only ones I can think of is Crysis 2, Doom 4 and maybe Stalker.
I didn't vote becuase you left out one option. I don't care. Really, games are fine today. We don't need a new updated graphics engine every year.

Oh I never said consoles were pushing gaming foward, this is almost never the case with the majority of genres, what I am saying is that they aren't holding it back either.
No offence TC but when people make threads like these why does the poll always neglect a significant portion of peoples opinions and have about 3 useless options?
I would have said "It's a good thing; it sets the standard for raising the bar"... It sets a mold... PC gamers should think of it as a good thing; it makes for a predictable curve of evolution in hardware and software.
Uh oh, now maybe Crytek will make a good game instead of a generic game with the best graphics ever.

I know I'm probably just feeding but what is generic about crysis?
The fact that it's open world. You see, a game has to be extremely linear to be innovative.

Average PC specs are about equal to console specs, so naturally it would make sense to appeal to the majority of gamers as opposed to the minority(i.e. the ones with at least 8800GT level gpus).
I'm glad he thinks this gen will only last til 2012. That's actually a little too long imo.

Why would that affect development of the PC version (all the while Crytek being one of the most competent developers out there)?
I think you have misunderstood the concept of a scalable engine if you think it will be "dumbed down"; if used efficiently there is no reason for the PC version to look downgraded.

I meant that the console version will be "dumbed down", because this guy thinks that consoles are able to produce the same graphics as PC's. Consolites can keep calling PC gamers elitists though, it just makes you look stupid because PC gamers hardly ever talk in SW.

It won't be downgraded on PCs so who cares, even if the graphics are slightly downgraded, is it really a big deal?

Only it will be downgraded for PCs, that's a given.
To accommodate consoles memory limitations they would have to convert it to cell streaming, which of course makes Crysis's trademark open environment game play no longer work.
Crysis couldn't be ported to consoles because of the way its game play was designed, Crytek themselves have stated that repeatedly. That it is now coming to consoles can only mean that aspect of its game play has been removed.

Okay, I see...
I haven't been saying anything to generalise about PC gamers though, but that doesn't stop the issue that there are one or two of them around here that seem to have a condescending tone.
Don't blame the consoles for just being an OPTION for a PC developer, you should blame all the PC pirates that are forcing all the PC devs onto consoles.
Terrible poll. Where the option for idc it's still a very impressive engine and I'm sure they can squeeze out more out of it in the upcoming years?

Giant_Panda
Piracy has existed for decades, it isn't what forced developers cross platform; and note I said "developers" and not "PC developers". There are just as many console companies reaching out for PC as PC developers going cross platform, if not more.
Do you want to know what has caused all the developers to go cross platform? Well I'll let Sony explain that.

Really? consoles are that bad in the graphics department? Sure the graphics on an average gaming PC are better than that of consoles, but it isn't such a huge difference that it's worth complaining about. I don't even think this is the case, currently there are supposed to be different teams for the console and PC modifying the experience for each platform, unless that's changed it will be unlike that crytek lowers that their visuals for the sake of consoles.

You know what? Who cares how good Crysis looks. It's not financially feasible for most devs to produce games at Crysis' level.

1.) I dont think that you want to push it too far foward.
2.) I dont understand how having a set standard for console graphics could push development costs to a breaking point. I mean there is a limit to what they can do. Unless you are talking about how it makes developers find how to push more and more out of the system by taking the back alleys through the hardware, which i understand would take money. Explain.
3.) Like I said with #1, you dont want to push it too far forward.
