If the launch is 2013-2014 for Sony and Microsoft, 8gb wouldn't be much of a stretch. RAM is dirt cheap anyway and makes a huge difference.
If they want all this tech... why are they not staying PC developers? They do understand that console manufacturers aren't going to cater to their every whim... right?
That would be AWESOME. Though I would be fine with just 4, that is if consoles don't become full blown PC's by next-gen.tagyhagConsoles will have upgradeable hardware next gen :P

man i dunno. it would be nice but i think that's pushing it a little. i'd stick with 4GB... 2GB evenFirebird-5
You're too short-sighted.
Consoles have a very long cycle, even longer than what it used to be seeing as the next XBox and Playstation are nowhere in sight.
We haven't even started the next gen yet and 4gig is everywhere (and cheap at that). It's therefore not too much to ask console makers to put in something like 8 gigs of RAM now so that four/five years later developers still have a decent amount of memory to push the envelope of gaming.

guess the console should have 2GB in them right now then if what you say is trueThat is a huge leap from current gen. Both the 360 and PS3 have 512MB of RAM. That is roughly 15 Times more RAM the the current consoles have.

A lot of people believe that the PS3 in particular is severely limited by its RAM, especially how they split it 50/50. Apparently its very bottlenecked and makes it harder to develop for.
It thought it had been estabilished that Crytek is CONSOLIZED.
Now for those that didn't catch it around the launch of Crysis 2, chalk up Crytek to the developers ruined by consoles. And be forever done with them.
If this is how they're going to treat PC gamers...
Crytek can dream all they want, but they're not getting 8GB of RAM in any next gen console. Microsoft and Sony's next consoles may at most have 4GB RAM. Nintendo may end up nickle and dimed by developers to except 2GB of RAM. These however simply is the limit of what can be expected from next generation console realisticately. 32bit Windows OS market saturation will effect PC game developement at a practical limit of 2GB for quite some time. Enough time for it to potential be more than a half generation issue if next gen starts with Nintendo in 2012 as rumored. Only console only developers would benefit from more than 2GB in the short term and since a complex memory hogging OS isn't likely to appear next gen it would be questionable to have more the 4GBs of RAM.
Serious? Not many games even use 4GB on PC, and even then it depends on the OS you're using. Quadruple that in 3 years? Yh, no.if next gen systems are released in 2014 then 16gb ram should be the least

Of course they want lots of ram on consoles, it's the primary reason why they had to discard the open environments in Crysis 2.
But whether they will get it is questionable. People talking about the cheapness of ram today, are forgetting that the next gen consoles will be using something else entirely. It's like if people talked about the cheapness of DDR1 ram when the current consoles were due, when they ended up using GDDR3.
That is a huge leap from current gen. Both the 360 and PS3 have 512MB of RAM. That is roughly 15 Times more RAM the the current consoles have.
Nintendo_Ownes7
The PS3 is around 15x more powerful than the PS2 so i wouldnt be suprised to see it.
But the thing is, even if Sony/MS make these beasts next gen, will devs be able to afford taking advantage? Considering how expensive HD games are this gen, imagine development costs on systems like that. We're likely looking at GTAIV budget being the average, $100 million to make a game.
I want to see a step up in tech but not at the cost of losing middle tier devs. All this would be ok if peoples expectations weren't so high but thats definately not going to happen.

maybe by 2018-2020 games will be using that much ram?

We're al dead by 2012.GDDR5? anyway, RAM is fast enough as it is, more of it would be ideal.I'd rather have DDR5 to be the standard instead of more GB's.

Huge leap that is not costly. Ram is pretty cheap. It's not that the cost will be 15 times more. Plus if next gen consoles do start 2 years from now, 8GB will not be that big of a deal.
Why only develop for the PC when you can have additional platforms to develop for with "similar" specs? The ultimate goal for these guys is not to have to develop different versions of their game because of hardware limitations. It works out better for them financially. If they want all this tech... why are they not staying PC developers?

8 gigs of ram in a console would be pretty damn awesome.

Haven't >60% of w7 sales been 64bit, or something (forgot where I heard it..)? I think we need to stop making 32bit os', all the modern processors are 64bit anyway.
Judging by history per gen, 4-6gb is the most likely amount of memory per console, I hope they go for the higher end, with how cheap ram is, help them future proof a bit... ish.
However, with the extra projected length of this gen's life, maybe we'll see more, sure would like to..
Consoles are always short on ram every gen. You would think that console makers would figure it out already. Next gen consoles will last a long time if this gen is any example. Pretty sure 1080p gaming is next on the to do console list add in 3d gaming as well. All this is going to need ram. Hey you know the console bean counters are going to say hey we can get away with 2 gigs lmao. The 360 and ps3 can't even do 720p properly cause they don't have the ram. As a pc gamer I always get the fastest and most ram.
What they also need to fix is the horrible optical media drive speeds. Again console makers will say hay we can get away with dvd 16x and blu-ray is at 12x but we will get 4x.
lol crytek now caring about consoles :PJohn_Read
The console market makes money and that is why any dev cares about it.
8 gig minimum? pcs even like that generallY? hell no.campzor
Yeah that's today, but where will PCs be seven years down the line (when the next generation should be half-way through and in full swing)?
PC has up to 3GB+2GB maxin 32bit OS and they want 8GB for consoles ?
If they have 2GB will bea miracle imo, 1GB is the most possible
And where would all this extrapower go? Better graphics? That would simply make games too expensive to make. The console manufacturers should mandate 60fps next gen to reduce costs.
/facedesk, no.. just no. Every gen it increases 8-14x, it's not going up 2-4x -.-PC has up to 3GB+2GB maxin 32bit OS and they want 8GB for consoles ?
