It's just the fact that there were more great amazing games that came out last gen compaired to this gen where most of the games are good or ok. The truely amazing game is almost non-existant becasue HYPE has become moreimportant for gaming companies than creating a truely wonderful game experience.
From Software is one rare exception where they didn't give a damn about the hype and created a game just for hardcore gaming fansand on top of that didn't even expect it to sell alot but it ended up becoming a masterpeice.
PS2 has over 10 AAA exclusives in 2001 alone...this gen started in 2005 and it's now 2011,Do any one of the current gen consoles even have 10 AAA exclusives yet?

I think a big part of what made previous gens seem better to me is that developers knew their niche and designed accordingly.
Not all games are meant to be overly streamlined. Not all games are meant to be action packed. Not all games are meant to hold your hand.
But now we have a FF game that resembles a linear action game more so than an RPG. We have games like SC Conviction, MGS4 and from last I heard the new Hitman treating stealth as an after thought rather than a main feature. How many genres have threy tried shoe-horning into an FPS this gen?
I miss the more focused designs we used to get. When I get an itch for a certain type of game I want to be able to go out and purchase a game that delivers in that specific area whatever it may be. And not just hope for one game in the gen that does that, but many.
I'm tired of all these hybrid blends. I'm tired of devs taking away the challenge. I'm tired of seeing great series being turned into something they were never meant to be. Nothing wrong with the new, but there was nothing wrong with the old either. There is plenty of room for both!
