[QUOTE="AfterShafter"]This is what im talking about ....... some people buy motorcycles...some people get the parts and build em up to make them their own custom dream machines, which takes time and money. some people buy their skateboards at walmart....some people go to the skateshop and build their own, which takes time and money. some people put stamps on envelopes.....some collect stamps, which takes time and money. some people watch movies on tv.......some go to the movies, which takes time and money. some people only play on consoles....some people play on pc's, which takes time and money. no matter what your HOBBY is, it's gonna require TIME AND MONEY to get the MAXIMUM out of your blessed past time. I can totally understand that some people don't wan't to get the maximum enjoyment out of their hobby, which is fine..........but have you ever noticed that the guy down the street who built his own custom, fast ass, loud ass motorcycle is ENJOYING THE **** OUT OF IT? He's sure not complaining about how it took him a year and half to save the money, weld the frame.....etc, because it's ALL WORTH IT. like the article stated at the end....anyone who calls themselves a real "gamer" needs to spend.....ahh forget it no one cares.//For a huge portion of the population, the time, effort, and money of PC gaming just doesn't make sense - spending a few hundred on a console and then forgetting the bloody thing exists for five years does.//
You don't get the primary difference between PC gamers and Console gamers, do you? I shall explain it to you. The difference between PC gamers and console gamers are what they are desire, console gamers simply desire to be entertained, while PC gamers desire a hobby. For hobbies, time, effort and money is essentially meaningless for the consumer, and in terms of hobbies PC gaming is actually pretty cheap and productive, look at my dad, he spends as much money as a mid range video card on a small train engine that does little more than go around in circles and he has dozens of em, folks spend boatloads of money on cards, stamps, and coins that do little more than sit in books. What we hermits are trying to do is get folks to get involved in a hobby that console gaming only give a taste of.

PC gaming, as a whole, is a flawed experience.
All the little problems and nuances may not amount to much on their own, but together, they can really bring you to tears. The steep initial cost, hardware redundancy, technical issues, patching, and whatever else, all amount to fustrations and time consumption some people aren't willing to spend. Its all subjective: am I happy fiddling with the graphics options to find what runs smoothly, or would I rather have that sorted out from the get go? Am I happy spending a few days organising and construction a PC or would I rather pick up a console and plugging it in, good to go?
I think PC enthusiasts fail to see the other side of the coin because they fail to notice what PC skeptics do: the little details that eat away at the overall experience. They've dealt with such things for so long its like second nature to them, and they fail to grasp the mindset of a person who prefers "out the disc in and play" gaming.
Apples for some, Oranges for others.

Actually the initially cost of going next-gen would cost me more right now when you add in the cost of an HDTV.
Console gamers look upon patches as a terrible thing when in fact they are a good thing. When you get a console game you are always stuck with the release version with no hope of corrections for any problems that might creep up (e.g if Lair had been a PC game it is more than likely that the control problem, among others, would have been addressed in a patch.)
It would take only a day to put together a PC (from scrach) and have it running with everything installed and you have to do this only once.If you have a 360 then you must be willing to go days without your console if it breaks (which is more likely than any of your PC hardware breaking down), so I dont think speading one day to biuld a PC is too much. Finding the right graphics setting is not that hard and unless you are into getting the best possible graphical output from your system it should not take more than a few min.
I don't understand how Xfire can compare to Xbox Live. If I am playign a game there is no way of me knowing if said person is using Xfire or not. It only works if you know people that use the software. it's like Windows Messenger.Deihmos
you can search a user up on the xfire, i for one dont like using this sort of program even tho i have an xfire account and log in on it ocanisialy, Steam could also be compared to live even tho they are not the same, the thing is pc dosent need something like live to make online easyer as it already is easy enough, there is a Live version for pc tho, i doubt any pc user would pay to have achivements and a few other perks

is it a myththat pc games have no split screen so that my poor friends who dont own computers or consoles can play with me or do I have to leave them outside in the rain?
I really dont have the time or money to be investing 1 second setting up a computer.... If I buy a gaming PC everything has to be fully prepared for me to plug and play. If im gonna be spending time doing something, Ill be freediving in northern california, the most beutiful part of the pacific ocean, and shooting 15lbs gnarly toothed lingcods with 3ft spears, fighting them to the death with a knife. I dont need games to try to replace real life. After you meleed a couple seals that got to close in the face, you realize how pointless it is waisint time attemping to "build" a PC for a decent price when you can just buy a console and play. Games should be fun.. thats its.

I don't understand why some act as if owning a computer is anything special. We all have computers and all ofthey are all capable of playing games.
Im at the part when they said "They're shipping with bugs, and being patched rapidly and frequently." o.O I thought everyone agreed that PC games have way more bugs, and especially bigger bugs. They also said they update the 360 firmware all the time...but not nearly as much as Vista. If you say otherwise, then you dont have a 360.So far this year ive counted4 updates...the Scene it,Spring Update, dashboard update for Halo 3,and Guitar Hero update.Ive had vista for nearly 2 months, maybe 3,and ive gotten over 10 updates I know...still reading.

 You took it completely out of context. That statement that reduced you to tears relates to the myth he was debunking, that most people think PC gaming is too expensive. A lot of people are intimidated at the thought of building a PC, since they feel they don't know enough about it, and so an expensive pre-built "$3000" PC is generally what they're looking at. Hence where this propagation that PC gaming is too expensive mainly comes from. Hence his entire point, which you completely missed and somehow took as condescending.

That is the nature of operating systems. They will be updated until they are no longer supported. I agree with the voice chat though. I don't hear anyone speaking much but voice chat has never been something standard in PC games. Now I am seeing more and more games with it built in but still it's not used as much. Nist times you are playing with a bunch of random people anyway.
I did not read the article but 15 minutes is a lie. You can sign in on any xbox. The recovery is only done if you are transferring your profile to another hard drive.

Most patches aren't required this is a common fact in pc gaming. Only recently did I patch up Company of heroes for multiplayer, but other wise It would've still been 1.0.
I do think the comparison with Vista and 360 firmware should not have been made. Simply because vista is an operating system which has to be able to run on an extraordinary amount of hardware/software combinations. This is something most people forget and I believe microsoft did a better job with Vista then they did with XP when it was first released.

Actually the downside of console voice chatting is that way more people do it. Pc has better voice chat, because it quite simply is optional in many games. Only counter strike has problems with voice spammers (i'm surprised you claim to never have heard it:/), but games like battlefield 2 use it quite nicely with the squad system. Personally I use it all the time.

cool. So do they add a special protection for your harddrive on the 360? (Serious question) Is it really that easy to take out your harddrive? Can you add one yourself like with the ps3 or do you need a special one?

I play on Live from time to time but rarely come across these types of people, and if I do its only a couple of minutes before they are told to be quiet by the rest of the players, usually ending the annoyance.

Steam Community destroys LIVE imo. Plus, its got sooo many people on it because so many people have Steam. As more and more games adopt Steam (Lots of major publisher like it because it has a large userbase and to place the game on Steam and host it costs next to nothing per game.). I know the PC Gamer(Magazine) Steam Grouphas 1500 members. Thats just a clan of sorts. There are over 59,000 groups all organized within Steam Community and there are 13 million users(Yes thats more than Xbox Live). This is all for an online service barely over a month old. And all of this is free. Steam also hosts VAC (Anti-Cheating that is 99% efficient) Dedicated Servers. I'd rank Steam Community above Xbox Live to be honest.
Myth # 1 = nonsense. An $800 PC will be good for about 4 yrs max. I can buy a 360 premium and 4 yrs of live for $650. I can rent console games. I don't even have to buy them!

Myth #3 = nonsense. You casn't compare PC sales to each individual console. You must compare to all consoles. Nice try at spinning, extremetech!

So, let's see. We have consoles being cheaper, both requiring patches, etc, consoles beating the PC in game sales, the PC with better online, but consoles being good, too, and copyright protection sucking on the PC.
Well, it looks like for now the consoles win for being cheaper, having good online, no annoying copy protection, and better software sales. There we have it.

Life isn't fair, but when you add up the total num,ber of consoles in existence vs the total number of PCs in existence, you see that consoles have a fraction of the userbase that the PC has.

The Personal Computer also has multiple platforms. You have Windows, Linux, and Mac osx. Each have commercial games available for them. People buy more console software despite there being many more home PCs in existence. Forget about everything for business. It's just the way it is.
wrong again....
PC stands for personal compunter....it includes ALL opperating systems simply by definition.
your logic makes no sence whatsoever. The PC is one platform....there is even a sticky on this.
In the end the PC unfortantly lacks certain genres that people want otn he pc. Though this can be said the exact same thing for consoles.. What really gets me is console players for the most part that try to go against the PC in ceaseless bashing are either too impatient or simpletons.. These people want to go out and spend $1000 on a prebuilt pc with out looking at specs, dresearching etc etc and expect to play everything at max.. I am sorry but IT REQUIRES THOUGHT and research.. In the end there is a reason why more kids play consoles by a long shot then PC's, its simple.

Wow. The PC is one platform, huh? Someone had better run and tell MS and Apple. I don't really know what to say to that one. You and whoever wroite that are simply wrong. There's a reason you can't natively play PC games written for one platform on another, just like consoles. You have the Mac OSX platform for gaming, the Windows gaming platform, and the Linux. There was also once a thriving DOS gaming platform.
I actually don';t care what else you reply, but I do think that it is kind of funny, in a silly, uninformed way. It's funny stuff like this that makes SW so entertaining.
Didn't you just go on about how its okay to pit 3 systems against 1 system because "life isn't fair"? That really doesn't put you in any kind of position to be labeling things other people say as 'silly,' especially before they are said.:?
[QUOTE="cobrax25"]wrong again....
PC stands for personal compunter....it includes ALL opperating systems simply by definition.

Macs aren't PCs.....
And you can duel boot, Linux and even the Mac OS all on ONE PC
[QUOTE="Mizarus"][QUOTE="Deihmos"]I don't understand how Xfire can compare to Xbox Live.
I have an Xfire account also but have not logged in or installed it in over a year. I did not comment on steam because all I ever used itdid is buy a game and I did not check out the new features they added. The article suggests Xfire is comparable to Live. That is a horrible comparison. For a messenger service there should be more people logged on at any given time but that is not the case.
Once again, the koolaid is being consumed. Xfire provides everything Live offers minus achievments. Steams new community features are outstanding and easily top Live's service as it's not only free, it offers clan and live chat featurs completely missing from Live.
[QUOTE="marklarmer"][QUOTE="Zeliard9"][QUOTE="marklarmer"]"But say you don't want to build your own PC. We understand-it can be intimidating."
there are so many things wrong with that its hard to know where to start.
Deihmos
Like what? A lot of people *are* intimidated by the thought of building their own PC.
i 'dont want to' go into work tomorrow, but that doesnt mean i'm physically unable to do it.
i hate how hermits talk down to people who play on consoles like they dont know how pcs work and pc gaming is the only way to learn.
I don't understand why some act as if owning a computer is anything special. We all have computers and all ofthey are all capable of playing games.
It's not special to have a computer, but having a Gaming PC that you build yourself is a hobby into itself. I can understand why Fakeboys and PC haters have a hard time understanding that.
