In terms of impact on the fighting genre, I would say Street Fighter would be king, but I voted for my personal favorite fighting series: Smash Brothers.
@mesome713: if you actually think that about Smash Brothers why didn't you vote for it? Currently my vote is the only one for Smash Brothers.
Tekken by far.
Tekken 3 is the GOAT of fighting games, nothing else comes close.
Soul Calibur (Dreamcast) probably gets second place IMO. then Tekken 2, Tekken Tag, Tekken 5, Tekken, Soul Calibur 3, Soul Calibur 2...
Tekken > Soul Calibur > Mortal Kombat > Street fighter > the other dweeb franchises not worth mentioning > Virtua Fighter
@Maroxad:
If we look at it in terms of revenue, SSBU grossed about $2 billion and SF2 grossed about $10 billion. SF2 grossed about five times more revenue than SSBU. SF2 is still one of the top 5 highest-grossing games to this day.
In terms of players, SF2 had about 25M active players in the US alone by 1994. The total US players in its lifetime could be double that, while the worldwide player base was likely in the hundreds of millions. It was a household name across the world in the '90s.

And this is why I think the comments made about Smash being the biggest fighting game franchise is absurd.
People forget how huge Street Fighter was.
@nod_calypse: Trump and his MAGA goons can continue to lie to the people, but luckily he’s not being tried by a Republican senate this time. “Bu bu bu I did everything right” is not a legal defence that works in court. Time for Trump to get what’s coming to him.
@blamix: Got a soft spot for MK myself. No doubt SF is better, but man, nostalgia is a big factor with MK.
