Every day on SW people throw around the term "Hardcore" to elevate their system of choice over everyone elses system of choice.

I think that this word "Hardcore and Hardcore gamer" is a very subjective concept that really has no right or wrong answer. Post your dfinition for "hardcore or hardcore gamer." Also please be respectfull of others being that there really is no real right or wrong when it comes to this topic.

For me I stuggle with a definition but I do know what hardcore is not:

1. If you only own 1 next generation system and you are not in the process of begging on the side of the road to get the other systems you do not have then you are not hardcore. (If you just only want one of the next generation system then once again you are not hardcore)

2. If you have not played and beat at least one Wiiexclusive, one Ps3 exclusive, and One 360 Exclusive this generation then you are not hardcore.

3. If you just hate everything on one of the3 systems (key word is everything) then you are not hardcore.

4. Ifthe use of primary colors in a game make you instantly say that the game is "Kiddy" then you are not hardcore.

5. If you think PC gaming sucks, you are not hardcore

6. If you think that Final Fantasy started on the Playstation so it should stay exclusive to Sony, then you are not hardcore (Impossible to imagine that somepeople think this, but hey maybe Final Fantasy 7 was called that becuase it is 7 times cooler than other games? :) )

7. If you did not Beat God of War 3/Get all 241 Stars inMario Galaxy2/ and Are not playing Halo Reach this second then you are not hardcore!

8. If you cannot admit the flaws in your #1 system of choice and admit the strengths of the systems you do not own. (Examples would be not being willing to admit that the Wii is gamecube 1.2, or acting like PSN is better than X-box Live when anyone that has friends to chat with in games knows the truth, or acting like you don't know that Ps3 is a way more powerful box than the 360). If the truth hurts you so much that your feeling sick just reading this and want to reply with denial and anger, then you are not hardcore.

9. If you were born after 1990 then sorry, you missed the hardcore boat. (lol this one is just a joke but missing out on a few generations of gaming does lower your hardcore status, unless you went back to play the greats)

9. Last and most important if you play systems and not games then you are not hardcore. (this is about 90% of the people on SW in my opinion but its just an opinion)

Add your thoughts on What hardcore is or is not. Have fun with it! :)

E rated games can have just as much appeal compare to M rated games, you'll know if a game has hardcore appeal when you see it, shouldn't be any problem on that. Hardcore gamers are more skewed, I don't know the clear definition for that one.

You're "Hardcore" if you hate Nintendo with a Passion and Hate Japan made Games and LOVE FPS games and stuff from Western Developers and you own an Xbox 360.

You're Hardcore if you've played Games for quite sometime and own more than one system and a have Huge Library of Games.

You're TEH HARDCOREZ if you have a Gaming PC and have been playing on the PC for a long time.

Hardcore Games are:

1) For the most part, real high-budget titles

2) Gameplay takes some sort of mastery

3) Strong emphasis on multiplayer OR a satisfyingly epic single player

4) A lot of time is put into the visuals (either technical, or a lot of though put into an artistic design).

... Pretty much any combination of these 4 make up a hardcore game IMO.

Hardcore games are those which require time and skill to master and hardcore gamers are those who take the time and have the skill to master them. A good example of this is CSS (not that I really like it) and Starcraft and arguably COD (before MW2). An example of a non hardcore game is, of course, MW2.

IMO if you are on a gaming site, posting in the gaming forums, you are a hardcore gamer. I know many will disagree with this though.

p.s. - I am not saying that is what defines a hardcore gamer, I am saying people here will try and tell you they are not hardcore gamers, but here they are :P.

A game that is one or more of the following: 1. Specifically targeting a niche (Rez) 2. Exceptionally difficult not due to design flaw, but due to legitimate challenge (F-Zero GX) 3. Extremely deep in terms of mechanics (Virtua Fighter 5) 4. Prohibitively expensive for the average gamer (Steel Battalion) 5. Time intensive in terms of investment needed to truly experience the game (Super Smash Bros Brawl) 6. Reflex intensive in terms of required response time (DoDonPachi) I only listed one game in each category, but there are obviously plenty of examples for each (some overlapping).

Seriously? Either way, I can't see how people could be hardcore by the games they play. Then most console gamers would be casuals by default.

by this site? A bunch of wannabee hipsters. What I think a hardcore gamer is? Someone who is into all forms of gaming, but more importantly really knows his/her indie gaming stuff. I think of it like a film buff really. He/she gets the mainstream and the stuff from the indie scene. That and I guess genuine knowledge about gaming
since I know someone is going to be a smartass, no I don't consider myself a hardcore gamer
I think that there are different levels of hardcore. I consider myself to be "higher" on the hardcore ladder. I say this because I invest a lot of time into games. I play a lot of different kinds of games. Also, I try to play any and all of the games that're supposed to be the best. Also, just my opinion, but playing single player experiences should be important to you. Any body can play Call of Duty online for 4 hours a day. SP games generally take more patience than mp. Again, just my opinion.

Definitly. Console gamers aren't casual by default, although there is a higher saturation of casuals on consoles than PC but there are still many relatively hardcore games on consoles.

Well, if you have an account on a gaming website and know a great deal about video games and such, then you are hardcore. Casuals don't care enough to invest time into learning a great deal about either of those, they just pick up their GTA, Call of Duty or NBA/NFL games and move on.

hardcore hinges on one aspect only imo... that being dedication.

If you only own a 360, and have only ever bought halo games... but you are one of the top players. You are still hardcore.

If the only game you own is WoW... and you limit yourself to 4 hours a sleep at night in order to be better than the competition... you are hardcore.

frankly i think people that own alot of systems and games (like myself) are probably less hardcore... as i casually play alot of games without truly dedicating myself to any of them.

Hardcore is not done through endurance, it's through passion and knowledge. A hardcore gamer will have a diverse experience in gaming spanning many years, able to give opinions about a wide variety of games spanning genres, and generally having a passion to play. Simply mastering one game or one gaming genre does not make one a hardcore gamer, especially if his/her knowledge is non-existant in other areas. Ex: WoW gamers who only play WoW-- they play a lot of one game, but are generally clueless outside of that one game. That's not a hardcore gamer. Sheer time spent does not make a hardcore gamer, it's a quality experience that matters.

IMO a 'Hardcore Gamer' requires 3 basic things,

1: Knowledge - Having played many games over an extensive amount of time, even games he/she may not like.

2: Skill - Often archiving the top 20% in any given game played

3: Understanding - Not only how games work but how putting together story/graphics/gameplay make a complete enjoyable gaming experience.

A 'Hardcore Game' caters to a 'Hardcore Gamer'.

For example,

If your not at all interested inGT5 even if you don't play sim racers, you might not be a hardcore gamer.

If you don't know what aggro range is, you might not be a hardcore gamer.

If you just started gaming 5 years ago, you might not be a hardcore gamer...... even if you are the best Halo player among your friends :P

In the end, It only matters if others consider you a Hardcore Gamer if you care what others think of you.

That's just one noob's opinion ;)

can they also possess multi consoles then too since they will need that to get hands experience to build that passion, knowledge and diverse experience?

Hardcore Games are:

1) For the most part, real high-budget titles

2) Gameplay takes some sort of mastery

3) Strong emphasis on multiplayer OR a satisfyingly epic single player

4) A lot of time is put into the visuals (either technical, or a lot of though put into an artistic design).

... Pretty much any combination of these 4 make up a hardcore game IMO.

You've got the complete wrong idea. I know it says not to "nerdrage" but this is exactly the misinterpretation of the term that runs rampant.

To me hardcore is about time. Basically to me if you spend more than 40 hours a week gaming you are hardcore.

I'd say that is being obsessive if anything.

I don't know.

We can spend a heap of time watching TV everday and pretty much all weekend and big events like sports etc.

tht could easily reach 40 hours a week.

especially in this forums since we are all so hardcore and we know about the games we talk about we must definately at least be putting in the hours right?
