Definition of hardcore?

Comman themes people have about Hardcore:

Wii has no hardcore games
Im going to quit gaming if Wii wins cause hardcore gaming will be dead
Im hardcore i play Gears of War
Ps3 is for harcore gamers

So what is hardcore? Is it...

1) Im hardcore because I play games 5+ hours everyday:?
2) Im hardcore because I play games M rating and up :roll: 
3) Im hardcore because I play on a gamepad and not kiddy motion sensing controllers:lol:
4) Im hardcore because I bought a 360 or a ps3:question:
5) Im hardcore because I bought 2 or more consoles this generation:shock:
6) Im hardcore because I Spend every penny I have on cosoles and games, and play them all day.:|

everyone throws the term 'hardcore' around like candy.

People often say the wii is not for hardcore people. Is that because people who bougth a wii didnt spend as much money as you? and are therefor not dedicated enough to gaming? Or because the majority of games are not M rated or above?

Does a game having an M rating make it hardcore? because its got blood? So your automatically a hardcore gamer?

 Or is it if you play games with a passion it makes you hardcore? This then does not rule out the wii since people could play Zelda and Mario with a lot of passion...

So what do people reckon?
Is there going to now be degrees of hardcore ness?

To me saying your hardcore means you play gaming in excess with a passion. You dont have to
spend a lot of money but youplay far to much. However then why is the wii not included? Why is 
gears of war included as a hardcore game? because its M
and got blood? or because you can play 'online' despite having a fairly short story length. 

soo... thats my question and my opinion somewhere in all that mix...

That's one definition. 

Hardcore is when you play about 10-16 hours a day, have been ranked top 5 on a main ranked game online, make money from playing video games in competition format or have completed every stupidly hard game there is.

For 3 years i played ffxi about 12-18 hours a day most days including my birthday and christmas, that was hardcore gaming.

I was rank 4 on clan base counter strike league and played 6-8 hours a day, that was just about hardcore. 

In the n64 days i won 2 golden controllers, 2 free games, appeard in magazines about 30 times with times, then later won many lan events unbeaten on halo2 and timesplitters 2, one timesplitters 2 game where death = -1 point and kill = 1 point i killed everyone so evenly when i reached 50 for the win second place was on 2 and last place was on -10, this wan't really harcore, just a mess about.

I have now taken a step back and play my Wii and ps3 3-4 hours a day, this is not hardcore. 

99% of console gamers arn't hardcore in anyway and if your xbox gamer tag says your a pro, doesn't make it so.

I consider myself a hardcore gamer. I might not play games for a week, but I can go for up to, when I got my Wii and TP, 36 hours with only toilet and drink breaks. With Sims 2 was my record, 3 days straight and no light for over a week. Also, I know almost everything there is to know in the game industry ... from Nintendo's predictions on Wii sales to the storyline of Gears of War .... yet I dont own the game ...

...and again, not really something you should brag about.

    Hardcore, IMO, is someone who does not just view gaming as a time-killer, but as a hobby. Someone who gets into the "meat" of gaming, and enjoys a wide swath of games. Someone who plays Madden and thats about it, I would not call hardcore. If you play Madden, Okami, Gears, and Oblivion, you would be much more likely to fall into hardcore status by my standards.

    I would venture a guess that a majority of the posters who spend time at a video game related forum fall into "hardcore" status.

    Again, those are only my opinions and definitions. If you don't agree, fine, but I won't argue them with you.
