Dev - "PS4 Pro Is Like A 5 Year Old PC And It's Holding Developers Back"

A Way Out team member, Josef Fares who is a game director for the game was interviewed by Engadget and he was actually talking about the PS4 version of the game. During the interview he actually said that PlayStation 4 Pro is pretty much an old kind of system that really holds the developers back. This is actually what he said:

“Do you want the honest truth? This machine is not so strong as you think. This is like a five-year-old PC. If consoles were as powerful as PCs are today, you would see all different games. Most of the work developers put out there is to make them work on consoles.”

Shots fired! I do find it strange that he has taken aim at the PS4 Pro, when his game also has to work on the OG PS4 and Xbox One.

True if there Pro is holding things back, what is the X1 doing? Burying them 6 feet under?

But anyways we have already seen developers do impressive stuff on PS4 that rival even high end PC games like Horizon so maybe what this guy is really saying is that they lack talent or want things easier to optimize. In the end the only way for PC to not be "held back" is not releasing the games on consoles but then guys such as this would cry due to low sales and, not only that, but the game would still be held back by the weakest settings on PC.

To think, PS4 was once called a 'developers dream' by someone at Square Enix at it's reveal conference, then goes to 'holding developers back' with the Pro. Aren't these consoles by Sony and MS supposed to improve? I mean, yikes.

Stating the obvious truth. This has always been the case with consoles.

But anyway, interesting to hear their point of view. I assume it's just a fairly difficult console to optimise games for efficiently, hence some developers are likely to have the odd grumble.

Consoles are always behind PC, and even the X1X is no exception to that. This is hardly new and has been true of every generation because you can't expect better performance from a box costing $400-500. No matter what the PR would have you believe.

If the Dev is unhappy with the limitations, they can either make their games exclusively for the PC, to the further exclusion of older and current lower spec hardware, or quit their belly aching and just do the best they can with the currently available specs. Which is what they've always had to do every decade, on console and PC alike.

Complaining about the hardware limitations is pointless as the tech landscape is never stationary, and that next advancement is always on the horizon in the never ending cycle.

And? I'm just saying that, for such reception the PS4 got and the Pro is getting among developers, that's pretty bad, especially when Pro is supposed to be an improvement. That said, I don't expect third parties to drop it like a brick house anytime soon.

@pinkanimal: Horizon doesn't look that good. It looks exactly how it should on this type of hardware. There are tons of games on PC that look much better. Horizon looks good only on YouTube on a small screen. I have it on my PS4 and on a my hdtv i can see bland textures all over the game. Like really bland low res textures. Not mentioning weather effects are like from ps4 era. I mean rain doessnt even produce rains drops on the ground like in other modern games. Or unrealistic plastic faces. Horizon is a good game, but it's not a gfx by no means like some fanboys try to make others believe.

@kuu2: How did I try to discredit the Scorpio? I tried to discredit fanboys wild claims. And all of it is coming to fruition. I'm a fan of Xbox and am buying the console day 1. I'm not sure why I would try to discredit the console I'm excited for.

PS4 Pro's memory bandwidth is crippling. "A Way Out" game is powered by Unreal Engine 4.

UE4 is gimped on current AMD hardware and usually lose to NVIDIA's TFLOPS counterpart.

I don't understand how someone can claim the Pro is holding developers back when it is currently the most powerful console on the market? That makes zero sense. The Xbox One and PS4 surely are holding devs back more. I think this comment can be dismissed pretty easily; if someone wants to throw daggers, throw it at the 1.31 teraflop machine that most people are trying to make compatible with their games.

"A Way Out" is another Unreal Engine 4.... well known 3D engine gimping on current AMD GPU hardware.

As for the comparisons between the PC and Xbox One X, he said: "If you think about it, it's kind of equivalent to a GTX 1070 maybe and the Xbox One X actually has 12GB of GDDR5 memory. It's kind of like having a pretty high-end PC minus a lot of overhead due to the operating system on PC. So I would say it's equivalent to a 16GB 1070 PC, and that's a pretty good deal for $499".

X1=8 year old PC

PS4=6 year old PC

PS4Pro=4 year old PC

XboneX=3 year old PC

It should be common practice to develop games in a scalable way such that you can make it run on a variety of hardware.

People who develop for PC know this since PCs can be more powerful, as powerful, or less powerful than a console from person to person.

So if anything, it's holding his artistic vision back. If your game is fun most people wont care about the developers artistic vision and will just be happy that it runs on their system.

This makes no sense at all. The original PS4 and Xbox one should be the consoles mentioned that are holding things back. According to this the Pro is holding development back, but the Xbox one isn't? As a PC gamer I don't really care. I enjoy all my consoles(PS4Pro, Xbox one) and PC as they all have their benefits and negatives. I just really wanted to point out the stupidity in his statement which is clearly a marketing/advertisement for the new Xbox.
